Thomas Woods Campground Introduce
For local residents seeking a "camping near me" experience in a beautiful and naturally-oriented setting, Thomas Woods Campground, located at 3100 IL-23 in Marengo, Illinois, offers an intriguing option. Based on customer reviews, this campground boasts a well-maintained environment with appealing features such as scenic campsites, hiking trails, and unique restroom facilities. However, it's important for prospective visitors to be aware of a significant environmental factor: its proximity to a shooting range, which has been noted to cause noise that may impact the camping experience.
The environment of Thomas Woods Campground is frequently described as "beautiful and well maintained." This suggests that the campground management takes pride in the upkeep of the grounds, contributing to an aesthetically pleasing experience for campers. The presence of "lovely camp sites including many with a short walk away from parking for a more natural setting" indicates a variety of options to suit different preferences. Campers can choose sites that offer easy access from their vehicles or opt for a slightly more secluded spot that requires a short walk, enhancing the feeling of immersion in nature. The mention of "beautiful oak trees" further paints a picture of a potentially shaded and scenic woodland environment. However, one reviewer humorously noted an encounter with falling acorns, reminding visitors to be aware of the natural elements around them.
One of the notable features of Thomas Woods Campground is its provision of "well maintained hiking trails." This is a significant draw for those who enjoy exploring the outdoors on foot and can add considerable value to the camping experience. The availability of hiking trails allows campers to further immerse themselves in the natural environment surrounding the campground, offering opportunities for exercise, wildlife viewing, and enjoying the tranquility of the woods. The review mentioning "plenty of hiking, for younger folks" suggests that the trails might be accessible and enjoyable for a range of ages and abilities.
The campground also offers "clean bathrooms with composting toilets." This is a noteworthy feature, as composting toilets are an environmentally friendly alternative to traditional flush toilets. Their presence indicates a potential commitment to sustainability and may appeal to campers who prioritize eco-conscious practices. The fact that the bathrooms are described as "clean" is a significant positive, contributing to a more comfortable and hygienic camping experience.
Another mentioned service is the availability of a "water spicket with drinkable well water at the entrance to the campground." Access to potable water is essential for any camping trip, and the provision of well water at a convenient location is a valuable amenity for campers to refill their water containers.
However, a major environmental factor that potential visitors must consider is the campground's proximity to a shooting range. One reviewer explicitly stated that the campground "is near a shooting range and on a Saturday night in September we heard constant shooting well into the night, till at least 10pm." This noise was reported to have disturbed sleep, particularly for young children, and detracted from the overall peacefulness of the location. While another reviewer mentioned "hardcore tent camping 100% loved it!" and seemingly was not bothered by the noise (or perhaps camped at a different time), the issue of noise from the shooting range is a significant point that local users should be aware of when considering a stay at Thomas Woods Campground.
Considering the mixed feedback, the ideal camper for Thomas Woods Campground might be someone who highly values a natural and well-maintained camping environment with hiking trails and is less sensitive to potential noise from a nearby shooting range, or whose camping schedule avoids peak shooting times (if such information were available). The campground seems particularly appealing for "hardcore tent camping" enthusiasts who prioritize the natural setting and hiking opportunities.
Currently, there is no specific promotional information available in the provided reviews. However, the inherent features of the campground – its natural beauty, well-maintained trails, clean composting toilets, and access to well water – could be considered its primary selling points. For local users searching for "camping near me" who prioritize these aspects and are willing to potentially tolerate noise from a nearby shooting range, Thomas Woods Campground offers a unique camping experience in the Marengo area.
To summarize, Thomas Woods Campground offers the following environment, services, and features based on the available reviews:
- A beautiful and well-maintained campground setting.
- Lovely campsites, including options with a short walk from parking for a more natural feel.
- Well-maintained hiking trails suitable for various ages.
- Clean bathrooms with environmentally friendly composting toilets.
- A water spicket at the entrance providing drinkable well water.
- Potentially beautiful oak trees providing shade (with a caveat about falling acorns).
- An environment that seems particularly appealing for tent camping enthusiasts.
However, prospective campers must also be aware of the significant environmental factor of a nearby shooting range, which has been reported to cause disruptive noise, particularly on weekend evenings. This is a crucial piece of information for local users to consider when deciding if Thomas Woods Campground is the right "camping near me" option for their needs.
For local users interested in experiencing the natural beauty and hiking opportunities of Thomas Woods Campground, contacting them directly at (815) 338-6223 or +1 815-338-6223 might provide more information about potential shooting range schedules or quieter times to camp. Despite the potential noise issue, the positive aspects of the campground's environment and amenities make it a noteworthy option for those seeking a more rustic and nature-focused camping experience in the Marengo area.

Thomas Woods Campground Reviews
It was a beautiful and well maintained camp ground with one major flaw - it is near a shooting range and on a Saturday night in September we heard constant shooting well into the night, till at least 10pm making it hard for our little ones to fall asleep and really detracting from the beauty of the place. If that doesn't bother you, it was a lovely place with lovely camp sites including many with a short walk away from parking for a more natural setting, well maintained hiking trails, clean bathrooms with composting toilets, and a water spicket with drinkable well water at the entrance to the campground. Also note that the oak trees were beautiful though one of the kids did get hit in the head with an acorn falling from a tree, they were ok but it did hurt quite a bit!
Sep 24, 2023 · Diana MHardcore tent camping 100% loved it! Next time probably won't bring the wife. LoL 😂 camp sites are awesome, plenty of hiking, for younger folks.
Aug 01, 2024 · Adam ChristianNice clean campground. Campsites are of decent size. Just wish there was access to running water other than near the entrance.
May 18, 2023 · Mischa SchlichtingNicely separated tent camp sites with 3 or 4 sites per cluster--nice for larger parties or family with several tents. The pit toilets were clean and the water pump was a neat touch. Too bad there aren't showers.
Aug 11, 2020 · Steve DReally great campsite. Toilets were plentiful (with no odor), the campsites were well placed, no mosquitoes which is usually unheard of this time of year and right after heavy rain. We brought our own water but they had various hands pumps for washing water. The attendant family was very friendly and helpful. Their little girl even gave my twins a hug when we arrived.
