Thompson's Lake Campground, located at 68 Thompsons Lake Rd, East Berne, NY 12059, USA, offers a camping experience with notable highlights such as exceptionally clean bathrooms, access to hiking trails, and a family-friendly atmosphere, though some aspects of the park itself may be due for updates.
For local users in the "camping near me" category, Thompson's Lake Campground provides a conveniently located state park option near Albany. The reviews offer a mixed perspective, highlighting both the positive aspects that draw visitors back year after year and areas where improvements could be made.
The environment around Thompson's Lake Campground is appreciated for its natural beauty and accessibility to attractions like Thatcher's Park. One reviewer mentioned "love all the hiking trails and also Thatcher's Park of course," indicating that the campground serves as a good base for exploring the surrounding natural landscape. The presence of woods and a nature center nearby also suggests opportunities for nature exploration and appreciation.
In terms of services, a significant positive mentioned by multiple reviewers is the cleanliness of the facilities. One camper stated, "The campground is extremely clean and the bathrooms are Immaculate and fully stocked and also very clean!" This is a crucial aspect for many campers and a strong point for Thompson's Lake Campground. The campground also features a playground for children, making it appealing for families.
However, another review noted that "the park itself can use major updates" and that "the playgrounds could be better." This suggests that while some facilities, like the bathrooms, are well-maintained, others might be showing their age. The same reviewer also pointed out the lack of electric sites, which could be a drawback for some RV campers, leading to the use of generators that can be "annoying." Additionally, this reviewer found that "the campsites are also not the cleanest," with leftover trash sometimes present.
A unique feature of Thompson's Lake Campground is their tradition of a Halloween event in October, which one reviewer described as something they "come here every October to experience." They also mentioned a bonfire on the beach with storytelling, where they met the supervisor, Diane, who shared the park's history and future plans, including a Halloween event in August. This suggests that the campground actively tries to create engaging experiences for its visitors.
The features of Thompson's Lake Campground, based on the reviews, include:
- Extremely clean and well-stocked bathrooms.
- Access to hiking trails.
- Proximity to Thatcher's Park.
- A family-friendly atmosphere.
- An "awesome playground" (according to one review).
- A nature center within a short walk.
- An annual Halloween event in October, and potentially one in August.
However, it's also worth noting the mentioned drawbacks:
- The park itself may need updates.
- Playgrounds could be better.
- Lack of electric sites (mostly RVs using generators).
- Campsites not always the cleanest upon arrival.
- The beach is described as "ok" but could be improved.
Promotional information gleaned from the reviews includes the appeal of the annual Halloween tradition, the family-friendly environment with activities for kids (bikes, playground, woods exploration), and the ongoing efforts to enhance visitor experiences, such as the potential August Halloween event. The proximity to natural attractions like hiking trails and Thatcher's Park also serves as a promotion for outdoor enthusiasts.

Thompson's Lake Campground Reviews
We had a terrific weekend even though it had to be spoiled by rain. The campground is extremely clean and the bathrooms are Immaculate and fully stocked and also very clean! It's been a tradition to come here every October to experience halloween. All the people around us we're awesome and we loved looking at all the different pumpkins and decorations. Love all the hiking trails and also Thatcher's Park of course. I want to give a shout out to Diane the supervisor. We had the pleasure of meeting her during a bonfire they were having on the beach with storytelling. She gave us some history of the park and also told us about all the fun things that they've been trying to establish to get people coming in. They have a Halloween event in August that I would love to attend. This is a great place for kids to ride their bikes or play on the awesome playground, or even exploring the woods and there is also a nature center a short walk away.
Oct 14, 2024 · Kelleah MoonThis is our family's go to state park because it is closest to Albany. The park itself can use major updates. But the bathrooms are good. The playgrounds could be better. It would be awesome to see electric sites one day. It's mostly RVs and the generators all day are annoying. The campsites are also not the cleanest. So there's always leftover trash from other people. It's a busy campsite. The beach is ok but it'd be great to have more space or a dock or something. There are a lot of good trails around the campground and the cities aren't far.
Jul 12, 2024 · Cher SchneiderIf you already paid the entrance fee for Thatcher, you can get in here for free. The campground is actually pretty nice and they have a small little baseball diamond as well as nicely maintained facilities. I went to swim in the lake and although they have a small beach with a lifeguard, I wasn’t a huge fan of the lake water (I spend more time swimming in creeks and freshwater streams). If you get in for free, it’s probably worth checking out. I wouldn’t pay money just to go swimming in the lake as there are some better places around. However, the campground does look very nice and it wouldn’t be a bad place to camp for a night or two. A lot of people were having fun and the place has a good vibe.
Jun 03, 2024 · Adam HI don't understand how I didn't come to this place which is only 23 minutes away from my house. Why would I go so far to camp? We only went for a picnic and even though it was September, the campsite was almost full. This is really good. Of course, this will be the first place on my mind for next spring and summer.
Sep 24, 2024 · Hatice DayanGreat staff & extremely well kept State Park! Beautiful beach & campsites are clean and cozy with fire pit and picnic table. Bathrooms are clean and well maintained. Security is visible with "spot checks" continually on going! Thanks for the beautiful facility!
