Under the Stars @ Chimney Rock Campground Introduce
For those in the Cresco, Iowa region and surrounding areas searching for "camping near me," Under the Stars @ Chimney Rock Campground, located at 3312 Chimney Rock Rd, Cresco, IA 52136, USA, presents a riverside option with access to the Upper Iowa River. This campground offers a blend of natural beauty and recreational opportunities, though recent customer feedback suggests a need for careful consideration regarding service and policies.
The environment of Under the Stars @ Chimney Rock Campground is notably situated along the Upper Iowa River, offering a scenic backdrop for camping. One positive review highlights the location of tent site PR-8 right next to the river, across from rock bluffs, describing it as a "lovely place." The presence of the river provides opportunities for activities such as kayaking and canoeing, which one visitor expressed interest in pursuing on a return trip. The campground also features some "cute cabins" on-site, offering an alternative to tent camping. While one review mentions the surrounding area as a "great little off the beaten path place," another describes the campground itself as "run down and not taken care of very well," indicating a potential discrepancy between the natural setting and the campground's upkeep.
In terms of services and features, the campground mandates the purchase of firewood on-site at $10 a bundle, with one reviewer noting that the bundles are of a good size and worth the price. While showers are mentioned in a positive light in an external review (TripAdvisor), the on-site reviews did not provide direct feedback on their condition. The campground previously had a playground, but according to one negative review, it has fallen into disrepair, with the owners reportedly just mowing around it instead of cleaning it up. This suggests a potential lack of investment in maintaining or upgrading facilities.
A significant point of concern raised in multiple recent reviews revolves around the management and their interactions with guests, particularly regarding policies such as bringing outside firewood and the handling of pets. One reviewer recounted an incident from the previous year where the owner's dog was running loose and allegedly attempted to attack one of their dogs. This raises concerns about pet safety and the enforcement of responsible pet ownership on the property. More recently, a confrontation occurred between the owner and a guest's husband over the issue of bringing outside firewood, despite the guest stating that many campgrounds with similar rules do not enforce them in such a hostile manner. The reviewer described the owner as "very confrontational," "hostile," and "unprofessional," creating a very uncomfortable atmosphere for their entire group, leading them to decide not to return.
Another negative experience involved the owner's son confronting a family about bringing in firewood while they were trying to settle their six-year-old daughter after a kayaking trip in the rain. The son's approach was described as "unpleasant and rude," demanding immediate compliance with the firewood policy and treating the guests "like criminals." This interaction deeply upset the family and their young daughter, further highlighting potential issues with customer service and the manner in which campground rules are enforced.
The negative reviews also mention issues with the campground's operational aspects. One camper noted that while they were harassed about checking in upon arrival, the office often appeared to be closed, creating a frustrating experience. The cleanliness of the bathrooms was also criticized in one review, adding to the concerns about the overall upkeep of the campground.
Promotional information is limited. The campground's proximity to the Upper Iowa River and the availability of tent sites and cabin rentals could be considered features promoted by its location and offerings. The potential for kayaking and canoeing on the river is also an implicit draw for outdoor enthusiasts. However, the negative reviews detailing issues with management, pet policy, firewood enforcement, and campground maintenance significantly temper any positive promotional aspects derived from the location and basic amenities.
In conclusion, Under the Stars @ Chimney Rock Campground offers a potentially appealing location along the Upper Iowa River with opportunities for river-based activities and a choice between tent camping and cabin rentals. However, recent feedback raises serious concerns about the professionalism and demeanor of the management, particularly regarding the enforcement of rules such as the no outside firewood policy, as well as issues related to pet control and overall campground maintenance, including the condition of the playground and bathrooms. While one past visitor had a positive experience with the friendly owner during a solo trip, the more recent experiences of groups and families indicate a pattern of confrontational behavior and a lack of attention to guest comfort and satisfaction. For local users considering this campground, it is strongly recommended to weigh these recent negative experiences heavily against the allure of the riverside location and to potentially seek further clarification from the owners regarding their policies and customer service approach before making a booking decision. Under the Stars @ Chimney Rock Campground Reviews
Went on a last minute solo weekend trip tent camping the weekend after Labor day. Owner was super friendly when I rolled in about 7:00. Have to buy firewood there at $10 a bundle but he gives you a very good size bundle and it's worth it. Got a tent site pr-8 right next to the river across from the rock Bluffs. Lovely place has some cute cabins on site too. Didn't get a chance to check out the showers but other reviews I've seen were good on TripAdvisor. Want to go back again and do kayaks or canoes. Great little off the beaten path place with the Upper Iowa River.
Sep 07, 2024 · Deanna PloesslThe group we camp with has had issues with this place the last 2 years that we have camped here. Last year the owner's dog was running loose all the time and actually came into our campsite and tried to attack one of the dogs. This year the owner was very confrontational with my husband over some firewood. He was demanding that we unload our firewood into his shed because it is posted that no outside firewood is allowed. We have camped lots of places that state the same thing but have never had an issue. The owner was very hostile and in my husband's face like he wanted to fight my husband. He was very unprofessional for a business owner. Our whole group was very uncomfortable at this campground after the confrontation took place. The campground run down and not taken care of very well. There used to be a playground that has fallen apart and instead of the owners cleaning it up they just mow around it. The bathrooms are not clean. They harass you as soon as you get there about checking in but the office seems to always be closed. Our large group will not be camping here again next year.To the owner- your son's approach to us was unpleasant and rude. We have 6 year old daughter that we were trying to get settled after kayaking all while it was raining when your son confronted us about the firewood. He demanded that we follow him at that very moment because he was going on break in 20mins. He treated us like criminals over firewood. My daughter was very upset when we came back from unloading the wood because we left without telling her where we were going.Did we bring in firewood when the rules state not to, yes, but I'm sure there are others that do the same. It's like bringing your own snacks to a movie theater. You're not supposed to but lots of people do it.The reasoning for my 1 star review is because the situation was handled VERY poorly and unprofessionally. An owner of a business or their employees should NEVER get into the face of a customer with the intentions of a fight the way your son did to my husband.
Aug 21, 2024 · Rachel EiselsteinWe stayed in cabin 3 for three nights and had plenty of room and a beautiful view of the valley. Short walk to the river. Lots of wildlife to enjoy and listen to also. The workers were very accommodating and friendly! We kayaked on the river and it was an easy exit point out at the campground. Entrance points were also not too far away and easy to enter. We are already planning next years trip!
Jun 01, 2024 · Sarah DoughtyAbsolutely wonderful experience here. Favorite place I’ve gone camping in a while. The camp sites are huge and well separated- so you don’t feel like you’re on top of each other. The views of the bluffs are amazing and I love to see the people passing by on the river. The bank down from the campsite is perfect t to go out and just swim in- the water is still and relaxing. The shower house is great, showers cost $1. Which is fine. Talk about water pressure! There’s WiFi which is so convenient when it comes to camping because the majority of the time there’s no service anywhere you go. There’s also games and comfortable seating in the shower house. Best I’ve seen. Another perk are the goats and the ponies. Such a fun little extra to have. I genuinely have no complaints and the staff and owners are super friendly! Will be here again and again.
Aug 02, 2024 · Karralyn LambertI give them a 1star. And the reason they will not refund you when the flooding was going on and could not get there. And we have been coming as a group for years now no longer. Shady.
