Me and my mother were planning to take a scenic drive around the Ortega mountains not knowing the full background behind the highway. We stopped by for pictures and fun at this little turnout. I was first to go in I got really weird vibes there which is usually NOT normal because I’ve done a lot of things like that. Second my mother went in she had gone a few feet away from me and told me to take her pictures. I had taken her pictures and we both looked over them seeing all types of entities that don’t look like her. In one of the photographs my mother had seemed headless. 10/10 recommend if you want a adrenaline rush and are intrigued by paranormal. Do your reasearch on ortaga highway - Mariah

Upper San Juan Campground Introduce

For local adventurers and those seeking a camping experience with a twist near Lake Elsinore, California, Upper San Juan Campground, situated off the infamous Ortega Highway (Highway 74), presents a location that goes beyond the typical campground. Listed under the 'Camping Near Me' platform, this site has garnered attention not only for its potential as a stop along a scenic drive but also for some rather unusual and intriguing experiences reported by visitors. While traditional information about the campground's environment, services, and features is sparse in the provided reviews, the firsthand accounts offer a unique perspective that might appeal to a specific type of camper – the adventurous and perhaps even the paranormal enthusiast.

The location of Upper San Juan Campground along the Ortega Highway is significant. This highway, officially known as State Route 74, is renowned for its winding and scenic route through the Santa Ana Mountains, connecting Lake Elsinore in Riverside County with San Juan Capistrano in Orange County. The drive itself is known for its beautiful vistas and challenging curves. The fact that visitors stopped at a "little turnout" suggests that the campground might be somewhat informal or perhaps an access point to a larger area. The surrounding environment would undoubtedly be characterized by the mountainous terrain, with its associated flora and fauna. Campers can likely expect natural landscapes, varying elevations, and the potential for wildlife encounters typical of the Southern California mountain ranges.

One of the most striking aspects of the reviews is the account of a paranormal experience. One visitor recounts a visit with their mother, initially intending to take scenic pictures. However, they reported experiencing "really weird vibes" and subsequently captured photographs that appeared to show "entities that don’t look like her," including one where their mother seemed "headless." The reviewer concludes by recommending the location "10/10" if one is seeking an "adrenaline rush and are intrigued by paranormal," advising others to "do your research on Ortega highway." This review, while subjective, undeniably adds a unique and perhaps unsettling dimension to the perception of Upper San Juan Campground. It suggests that the area might be associated with local legends or a history that contributes to such experiences. For those interested in the supernatural or seeking a thrill beyond traditional camping, this aspect might be a significant draw.

The other reviews focus on the accessibility and road conditions around the campground. One reviewer simply states, "Just be careful it's roof and I ended turning around because I did think I would make it and it was hard to turn around." The use of the word "roof" is unclear but the overall sentiment suggests that accessing the campground or areas near it might involve navigating challenging road conditions that could be difficult for some vehicles, especially larger ones like RVs or trailers. The difficulty in turning around also implies potentially narrow roads or limited space for maneuvering.

Another review provides more specific directions regarding trail access based on the direction of travel on Highway 74. If driving west and making a left turn, the reviewer describes the trail as "easy." However, turning right offers two left options (which the reviewer did not try) and a right option that the reviewer was "glad I didn't get stuck" on. This indicates that there are trails accessible from the vicinity of Upper San Juan Campground, but their difficulty levels and accessibility vary significantly. It also reinforces the idea that the terrain might be rugged and require caution, especially when venturing off the main highway.

Given these reviews, information about traditional campground services and features is conspicuously absent. There is no mention of restrooms, water sources, designated campsites, fire pits, or other common amenities found in developed campgrounds. This suggests that Upper San Juan Campground might be a very primitive or undeveloped camping area, possibly more akin to dispersed camping along a turnout or trailhead. Campers considering this location should likely be prepared for a self-sufficient experience, bringing their own water, sanitation, and camping equipment, and adhering strictly to Leave No Trace principles.

The environment surrounding Upper San Juan Campground is likely characterized by the natural beauty of the Ortega Mountains. This could include forests, chaparral vegetation, rocky terrain, and varying elevations. The scenic drive along Highway 74 suggests that the area offers picturesque views. However, the reviews also hint at potential hazards such as difficult road access and challenging trails. Campers should be prepared for varying weather conditions typical of mountain regions and be aware of local wildlife.

In terms of promotional information, there is none explicitly provided. However, the unique aspects highlighted in the reviews – the potential for paranormal encounters and the challenging access and trails – could inadvertently serve as a draw for a specific niche of adventurous campers. The proximity to the scenic Ortega Highway might also attract those looking for a stopover during their drive or a basecamp for exploring the surrounding mountains.

For local users browsing 'Camping Near Me' and considering Upper San Juan Campground, it is crucial to temper any expectations of a traditional campground experience. The available information points towards a more rugged and potentially unusual location. The possibility of paranormal activity, while intriguing to some, should be approached with caution and respect. The warnings about road and trail conditions suggest that careful planning and appropriate vehicle and gear are essential. If you are an experienced camper seeking a remote and perhaps even spooky adventure off a scenic highway, and you are prepared for potentially challenging access and a lack of amenities, Upper San Juan Campground might offer a unique experience. However, thorough research on the Ortega Highway and the specific area is highly recommended before planning a visit.
