New owner hasn't kept up the grounds as good as Jeff and Tammy did, previous owners. Drinking Water is consistently smelly(rotten egg smell) Verizon phones have virtually no signal in the campground, not the owners fault but just want future campers to know. Wifi doesn't work that well, some areas of the campground it doesn't work at all. Very limited TV channels off of your antenna. No cable options and depending on location satellite tv isn't an option either, line of site to satellite is blocked by trees. new lease contract is very one sided and there is a "no sue" clause that you have to sign to continue leasing there. The campground put up a volleyball net with half on one level and the other half of the net below a brick retaining wall, see picture. The campgrounds beach is small, and that's being polite. The beach and swim area is the "square" area in the photos. On the Facebook page a lot of the photos are from other areas around the lake and not in the campground, very misleading in my opinion. Like the docks and trails. The old owners put their blood ,sweat, and tears into this campground and did a phenomenal job. The old owner Jeff knew how and when to change the water filters and the drinking water was fine, not so much this year, 2022 with the new ownership. A copy of the 2023 season lease is attached. Zoom in towards the bottom and read the red lettering if you want to see the "no sue" clause. New owner either didn't do mosquito control or switched the process because bugs were the worst we've seen them.in 7 years. New owner also didn't properly pick up leaves last fall and that gave mice a place to live until they found people's campers, many campers said to me that they never had a mice problem before and they contributed it to the new owner not properly cleaning up the grounds before winter. - scott ferguson
Valhalla Island Campground On Lake Shetek Overview Intro Photos Location Reviews

Valhalla Island Campground On Lake Shetek Introduce

For local users seeking a lakeside camping experience within the "camping near me" category, Valhalla Island Campground On Lake Shetek, located at 6 Valhalla Dr, Slayton, MN 56172, USA, offers a location directly on the shores of Lake Shetek. This proximity to a significant body of water in southwest Minnesota suggests a setting conducive to various lake-related activities and a potentially scenic environment. However, recent customer feedback provides a mixed perspective on the current state of the campground under new ownership, which potential visitors should carefully consider.

The environment of Valhalla Island Campground is undoubtedly centered around its location on Lake Shetek. This large lake is known for its natural beauty and opportunities for fishing, boating, and other water-based recreation. The presence of docks, as mentioned by a reviewer, suggests that campers have access for boating and fishing directly from the campground. Additionally, the existence of trails indicates that there are likely opportunities for walking and exploring the natural surroundings beyond the immediate campsite. One positive review highlights the "atmosphere" of the campground, suggesting that the lakeside setting contributes to an enjoyable outdoor ambiance.

However, a more critical review points out some concerns regarding the upkeep of the grounds under the new ownership compared to previous management. This suggests that while the inherent natural environment of Lake Shetek remains an attraction, the maintained quality of the campground itself might have changed. Potential campers should be aware of this feedback and perhaps inquire about the current condition of the grounds and facilities.

In terms of services and features, the reviews offer a somewhat contrasting view. One positive review mentions the enjoyment of the playground by children, indicating that this family-friendly amenity is available. The opportunity for fishing is also highlighted as a positive aspect. However, the more critical review raises several concerns. One significant issue is the consistently reported smelly drinking water, described as having a "rotten egg smell." This is a serious concern for any camper and should be a primary point of inquiry for potential visitors. The review also notes very limited to no Verizon phone signal within the campground and unreliable Wi-Fi, with coverage being non-existent in some areas. While the lack of cell service might not be the owner's fault, it is crucial information for campers who rely on their phones for communication or navigation. The poor Wi-Fi could also be a significant inconvenience for those needing internet access.

Further concerns raised include limited over-the-air TV channels and no cable options, with satellite TV being unreliable due to tree blockage in many locations. This might be a consideration for campers who like to have entertainment options during their stay. The small size of the beach and swim area is also mentioned, with a suggestion that promotional photos on the campground's Facebook page might be misleading by showcasing areas around the lake that are not part of the campground itself. This discrepancy between promotional material and the actual facilities is something potential visitors should be aware of.

The critical review also mentions a "no sue" clause in the new lease contract for seasonal lessees, which is a significant legal aspect that might not directly affect short-term campers but indicates a potentially less guest-friendly approach in the campground's policies. Additionally, the reviewer noted an increase in bugs, possibly due to inadequate mosquito control, and a mice problem attributed to improper leaf cleanup before winter. These points suggest potential issues with pest management and general maintenance that could impact the camping experience.

Despite these concerns, the positive review indicates that some visitors are still enjoying their time at Valhalla Island Campground, appreciating the atmosphere and the new ownership. This contrasting feedback suggests that experiences might vary, or that certain aspects of the campground remain appealing despite the reported issues.

Promotional information should ideally focus on the positive aspects, such as the location on Lake Shetek, the availability of docks and trails, and the playground for children. The opportunity for fishing on Lake Shetek is also a significant draw. However, in the interest of providing an objective introduction based on all available information, it is crucial to acknowledge the concerns raised in the more detailed review. Potential promotional efforts should perhaps address these concerns or provide clear and accurate information about the current state of the campground, including the water quality, connectivity issues, and maintenance efforts being undertaken.

For local users considering Valhalla Island Campground for their "camping near me" needs, it is strongly recommended to contact the campground directly using the provided phone numbers to get the most up-to-date information. Inquire specifically about the current status of the drinking water, the reliability of Wi-Fi and cell service (especially if Verizon is your provider), the size and condition of the beach and swim area, and any recent improvements or changes in maintenance practices. It might also be helpful to ask for recent photos of the campground facilities to get a realistic view of the current conditions.

In conclusion, Valhalla Island Campground On Lake Shetek offers a potentially attractive lakeside camping experience in southwest Minnesota, with access to Lake Shetek for fishing and boating, as well as docks and trails. Families might appreciate the playground. However, recent feedback has raised concerns regarding the quality of drinking water, poor cell and Wi-Fi connectivity, limited TV options, a small beach, and potential issues with maintenance and pest control under new ownership. While some visitors report a positive experience, it is crucial for local users to be aware of these potential drawbacks and to contact the campground directly for the most current information before making a reservation to ensure it meets their expectations for a "camping near me" getaway.
