Van Etten Lake State Forest Campground Introduce
For local users in the Oscoda Twp, Michigan area searching for "camping near me," Van Etten Lake State Forest Campground, located at 6722 Pine St, Oscoda Twp, MI 48750, USA, presents a lakeside camping option. Based on the limited reviews available, experiences at this campground appear to vary significantly, which is important for local campers to consider when planning their outings.
One reviewer had a very negative experience, stating it was the "Worst place I have ever camped in my life." This individual cited persistent traffic throughout the night, disturbances from drunk individuals arguing nearby multiple times, and continuous vehicle movement in and out of the campground that kept them awake until after 3 am. This review strongly advises against camping here, calling the place "terrible" and a "joke." This feedback highlights a potential issue with noise and a lack of peacefulness for some campers.
In stark contrast, another reviewer described the campground as "Nice and quiet, right on the lake." This positive review also mentioned "clean bathrooms" and well water that tasted great. Notably, this reviewer mentioned that they were one of only three campers in the entire campground during their visit. This suggests that the experience might be heavily influenced by the number of other campers and potentially the time of year.
Given these contrasting perspectives, local users searching for "camping near me" at Van Etten Lake State Forest Campground should be aware that the atmosphere can range from noisy and disruptive to peaceful and serene, possibly depending on the occupancy and the behavior of other visitors. The lakeside location mentioned in the positive review is a significant potential draw, suggesting opportunities for lake-related activities and scenic views. The cleanliness of the bathrooms and the quality of the well water are also positive aspects to consider.
As a State Forest Campground, one might typically expect a natural environment, likely with wooded areas and direct access to Van Etten Lake. State Forest Campgrounds in Michigan often offer more rustic camping experiences compared to state parks, sometimes with fewer amenities. However, the mention of clean bathrooms suggests that at least this basic service is maintained.
To provide a more detailed picture for local users, we can speculate on the potential services and features based on the name and the contrasting reviews. Being "right on the lake" implies potential access for swimming, fishing, or boating, although the reviews do not explicitly confirm these activities are permitted or facilitated by the campground. The "well water" mentioned in the positive review indicates a source of potable water on-site.
The negative review's emphasis on noise suggests that the environment might be impacted by its proximity to roads with nighttime traffic and potentially by the behavior of other campers. This is a crucial point for local users seeking a quiet retreat in nature.
The positive review, highlighting the quietness and low occupancy during their stay, suggests that under certain conditions, the campground can indeed offer a peaceful experience. This variability in experience, as indicated by the conflicting reviews, makes it essential for local users to gather more information if possible.
To get a clearer understanding of the current conditions, services, and typical environment at Van Etten Lake State Forest Campground, local users might consider looking for more recent reviews on camping websites or contacting the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR), which typically manages State Forest Campgrounds. Information about the number and types of campsites (e.g., rustic, electric), rules and regulations, and available amenities would be valuable for those planning a trip.
As no promotional information is provided, we cannot comment on any special offers or incentives. The two reviews offer a snapshot of past experiences, one highly negative and one positive, under potentially different circumstances.
In conclusion, Van Etten Lake State Forest Campground offers a lakeside location in Oscoda Twp, MI, which could be appealing to local users looking for "camping near me" with water access. However, potential visitors should be aware of the conflicting reviews regarding noise levels and overall experience. While one reviewer found it quiet and pleasant with clean facilities, another described it as the worst camping experience due to nighttime noise and disturbances. The experience seems to be highly variable.
For local campers considering Van Etten Lake State Forest Campground, it would be prudent to seek additional, more recent reviews or information from the managing authority to get a better sense of the current environment, services, and potential for noise issues. This will help you make an informed decision about whether this "camping near me" option aligns with your expectations for a camping getaway.

Aug 31, 2024 · Josh LosingerNice and quiet, right on the lake, clean bathrooms and the water (well water i believe but it actually doesn't taste like it, it's great!!) we were one of only 3 campers in the whole place!
Jun 19, 2020 · Morgan TschirhartLoved the fresh air and ice fishing. There is a porta potty if needed. Beautiful place to go.
Feb 21, 2021 · Rich NewzI was there at night viewing the aurora recently. I've tent camped there several times in the past and have enjoyed it.
Oct 25, 2024 · Ted AndersonLoved the camp site (best I've seen!) but the road noise (trucks) and Air Force Base helicopters that ran until 11:00 pm made for a very unpleasant experience. Paid for 3 nights, packed up and left by 7:30 am after the first night (3-hour sleep). Disappointing. Would work if you were a heavy sleeper.
