Situated near Cascade Locks, Oregon, this campground provides a base for exploring the natural beauty and recreational opportunities of the area. While offering several appealing features, it's important for potential visitors to be aware of certain environmental factors that may impact their camping experience.
Riverside Environment and Natural Setting
Viento State Park South Campground boasts a picturesque location directly adjacent to the Columbia River. This proximity offers campers easy access to the riverfront for scenic walks, fishing, and enjoying the waterfront environment. The campground is described as clean and shady, suggesting a comfortable setting with mature trees providing cover, particularly beneficial during warmer months. The natural surroundings offer a typical Pacific Northwest landscape, with lush vegetation and the dynamic presence of the mighty Columbia River.
The convenience of being right near the river is a significant draw for many visitors, allowing for spontaneous enjoyment of the water and the surrounding views. The well-maintained nature of the campground contributes to a pleasant outdoor experience, ensuring that basic facilities are in good order for campers.
Services and Amenities Offered
Based on general expectations for state park campgrounds, Viento State Park South Campground likely provides essential services and amenities to ensure a comfortable stay for its visitors. These typically include:
- Campsites: Offering a range of campsites that can accommodate tents and potentially RVs, although specific hookup information is not provided in the reviews. Campsite sizes can vary, with one review noting a particular spot as "very small for a tent" while others suggest generally adequate spacing. Most campsites in state parks are equipped with a picnic table and a fire ring.
- Restroom Facilities: Clean and maintained restroom facilities are a standard offering in state parks. The reviews mention a "clean" campground, implying that the restrooms are likely kept in good condition.
- Water Access: Potable water sources are generally available throughout the campground for drinking and basic hygiene needs.
- Waste Disposal: Designated areas for trash and recycling are typically provided to help maintain the cleanliness of the park.
- River Access: A key feature of this campground is its direct and short walk to the Columbia River, providing opportunities for various water-related activities and scenic enjoyment.
For detailed information on specific amenities, such as the availability of showers, electrical hookups, or dump stations, it is recommended to consult the official Oregon State Parks website or contact the park directly.
Key Features and Recreational Opportunities
The primary feature of Viento State Park South Campground is its location along the Columbia River, which provides several recreational opportunities:
- River Access and Activities: The short walk to the beautiful river area allows campers to engage in activities such as fishing, picnicking by the water, and simply enjoying the scenic views of the Columbia River Gorge. The river also supports activities like windsurfing, although the reviews do not specifically mention this in relation to the campground itself.
- Convenient Location: The campground is noted for its "incredibly convenient location," likely due to its proximity to Cascade Locks and potentially easy access to nearby attractions and amenities. One review mentions that Walmart is just a 10-minute drive down the highway, which can be useful for campers needing supplies.
- Shade: The presence of shade, as mentioned in one review ("clean and shady"), is a significant benefit, especially during warmer months, providing a more comfortable camping environment.
Important Considerations: Noise from Highway and Railway
It is crucial for prospective campers to be aware of a significant environmental factor highlighted in both provided reviews: noise pollution from the nearby highway and, particularly, the active railway line. The reviews indicate that the campground is located right off the highway, and while one reviewer found this noise relatively easy to tune out, the railway line presents a more significant concern.
The railway line is situated very close to the campground, and trains are reported to pass by frequently, especially during the night. A particularly impactful aspect is that the trains are required to blow their horns due to a nearby railroad crossing. Reviewers describe the train noise as "LOUD!" and report being woken up multiple times during the night, even through earplugs. One reviewer explicitly advises tent campers to bring earplugs and notes that even with them, the noise can be disruptive.
This noise factor is a critical piece of information for local users considering "camping near me" at Viento State Park South Campground. While the location offers convenience and river access, the potential for significant noise disturbance, especially at night, should be taken into account, particularly for light sleepers or those camping in tents.
Potential Promotional Information
The provided information does not include any specific promotional offers for Viento State Park South Campground. Typically, Oregon State Parks may offer discounts for off-season camping, extended stays, or for seniors and individuals with disabilities. To obtain the most current information on any potential promotions or discounts, it is recommended to visit the official Oregon State Parks website or contact the park directly.
Reservations for Oregon State Parks campgrounds are often recommended, especially during peak season. Information on how to make reservations and any applicable fees can be found on the Oregon State Parks website.

Viento State Park South Campground offers a conveniently located camping experience near Cascade Locks, with direct access to the beautiful Columbia River. The campground is noted for being clean and shady. Its proximity to the river provides opportunities for scenic enjoyment and various water-related activities. Additionally, its location offers easy access to nearby amenities in Cascade Locks and along the highway.
However, it is essential for potential visitors to be aware of the significant noise pollution from the adjacent highway and, more notably, the very close and active railway line. The frequent passing of trains, especially at night, and the required horn blowing at a nearby crossing have been reported as loud and disruptive to sleep, particularly for tent campers. Bringing effective ear protection is strongly advised.
For local users prioritizing convenience and river access and who are prepared to manage potential noise disturbances, Viento State Park South Campground can be a viable option for "camping near me" in the Columbia River Gorge. Viento State Park South Campground Reviews
Nice campground, clean and shady right near the river. We camped in the northern campground spot 53. Very small spot for tent. Spots are close together but neighbors are respectful, at least for our weekend. It is right off the highway but that was pretty easy tune out, unfortunately the rail road line is right here as well, I think I counted 4 or 5 trains blowing by from 10pm to 630am..... And they in fact have to blow the horn as their is a rail road crossing. I've gone to campgrounds where reviewers complained about the trains, that was nothing compared to this lol, it is LOUD! If you are sleeping in a tent, bring ear plugs, if you don't or forget, fear not, Walmart is 10 minutes down the highway! You will want them!!
May 12, 2024 · Dorothy PierceThe campground is located in an incredibly convenient location, is well maintained, and just a short walk to a beautiful river area. However, it is also right near a railroad crossing where the trains are required to blow their horns while going through, and are incredibly loud. I only stayed one night and was woken up by the trains at least 4-5 times even through my earplugs as they are so loud.
Jun 05, 2024 · Kate SmathersBest weekend of our lives, everyone left with tears in their eyes because we didn't want to go home! Beautiful camp site meant for smaller tents. Definitely set up for glamping after the renovations but it was still a beautiful experience.Rangers and camp hosts were helpful and accommodating when we needed to move camp sites.
May 14, 2024 · Alivia LewisNice area with lots of trees. Do NOT get a site nearest the train tracks if train noise bothers you. Those rails are some of the busiest in the country. On the other side of the park you have constant traffic on I-84. The sites are all back in and can be difficult for longer bumper pulls. Check the internet for site photos before booking. Our site had a power pole support in it so that I could not put out our awning. Also, keep your items secure. We had our cooler stolen in the middle of the night. I talked to a Deputy Sheriff who drove through and he said they have a big problem with that at this park.
May 28, 2023 · R. UnSirTent spot C9 is small and with substantial rocks. Bring only small (2/3-person) tent. Pic attached is my suggested limit size (I was lucky).
