Viento State Park North Campground Introduce
For local residents seeking "camping near me" in the scenic Cascade Locks, Oregon area, Viento State Park North Campground presents a location with both appealing natural features and significant drawbacks that potential visitors should be aware of. Situated at Cascade Locks, OR 97014, USA, this campground offers proximity to the Columbia River Gorge and opportunities for outdoor activities. However, feedback from recent campers highlights a major concern regarding noise levels that could impact the overall camping experience.
The natural environment surrounding Viento State Park North Campground appears to have some positive aspects. Reviewers noted the presence of "lots of trees," suggesting a potentially shaded and pleasant setting. The campground also offers "easy walk to the river," indicating convenient access to the Columbia River for scenic views and perhaps some river-related activities, although specific details about these activities are not provided. The location within the Columbia River Gorge implies access to the region's renowned natural beauty, including hiking trails and stunning vistas. For those interested in exploring the outdoors, the campground's location could serve as a base camp for hiking and sightseeing in the area.
In terms of services and features, the limited information available from the reviews focuses primarily on the natural setting and the noise issue. One positive mention is of a "cute and very friendly and helpful" state worker, suggesting that park staff are available and provide assistance to campers. The fact that the campground was "not crowded" during a specific period in April 2025 might be seen as a potential benefit for those seeking a less congested camping experience, although this could vary depending on the time of year. Beyond these points, specific details about amenities such as restrooms, water access, fire pits, or picnic tables are not mentioned in the provided reviews. This lack of information suggests that potential campers may need to seek further details from official park resources to understand the full range of services available.
The most prominent feature, and a significant concern raised by multiple reviewers, is the extreme noise generated by nearby train traffic. Campers consistently describe the train as "insanely loud and close," with one reviewer stating it's "the loudest thing you have ever heard." The westbound trains are particularly problematic for sites 27 and 29, as these appear to be located right where the trains regularly blow their whistle due to a nearby crossing, reportedly about a quarter of a mile away. This whistling is not a single event; one reviewer noted that the westbound trains blow their horn three times before reaching the crossing. While eastbound trains reportedly blow their horns before reaching the campground itself, they are still described as loud. Additionally, the sound of trains across the river is also audible, contributing to a pervasive noise environment. Highway noise is also mentioned as a factor, with one reviewer describing it as sounding like a windy night due to traffic, although it is considered less disruptive than the train noise.
Considering the "camping near me" category for local users, Viento State Park North Campground's proximity to Cascade Locks and the Columbia River Gorge might initially seem appealing. The easy access to the river and the presence of trees could be attractive for those wanting a quick outdoor escape. However, the overwhelming negative feedback regarding train noise is a critical factor that potential campers must consider. The reviews strongly suggest that the noise is disruptive to sleep and the overall enjoyment of the natural environment, potentially negating the benefits of the location for those seeking a peaceful retreat.
Currently, there is no promotional information available for Viento State Park North Campground in the provided reviews. Given the significant noise concerns, it would be prudent for local users to carefully weigh the potential benefits of the location against the reported drawbacks. If proximity to hiking trails or the river is a top priority and you are a heavy sleeper or prepared for significant noise, this campground might still be considered. However, for those seeking a tranquil and restful camping experience, the consistent negative feedback regarding train noise suggests that alternative campgrounds in the "camping near me" category might be more suitable.
In conclusion, Viento State Park North Campground in Cascade Locks, OR, offers a location with trees and easy access to the Columbia River, potentially serving as a base camp for hiking in the area. However, the overwhelming feedback from multiple reviewers highlights extremely loud and frequent train noise, particularly affecting certain campsites, as well as noticeable highway noise. While a friendly park worker was mentioned, the significant noise pollution appears to be a major detractor from the overall camping experience. Local users searching for "camping near me" should carefully consider these noise issues before choosing Viento State Park North Campground for their outdoor getaway. Exploring other options in the vicinity might lead to a more peaceful and enjoyable camping trip.

Viento State Park North Campground Reviews
Lets start with the positive well I gave it a one star. The state worker was cute and very friendly and helpful and the place was not crowded April 13th-april 16th 2025. Lots of trees and easy walk to the river. That was the good now the bad really bad. The TRAIN is insanely loud and close I mean close. Sites 27 and 29 are the worst for west bound train as that is right where they blow the whistle every time without fail as the crossing is 1/4 mile away. It gets better they blow it 2 more times before reaching the crossing. The good news is the east bound trains blow horn before reaching campground but they are still loud. You can also hear train across the river. The highway is also noisy and at night sorta sounds like a windy night but it is just traffic. It is a good spot to stay if hiking and need a base camp but honestly the trains are crazy loud and kills the night sleep.
Apr 16, 2025 · D Stump (Sawtooth Doug)DO NOT STAY HERE. campground is okay but a train will go by the campground every hour all night long and blow its horn and be the loudest thing you have ever heard and lasts about ten minutes, repeatedly all night long. not to mention the highway is loud but nothing compared to the train. Made this last minute stop cause it's was getting dark and ruined the next couple days just save yourself the horrific night and go anywhere else
Sep 05, 2024 · Matt BuseduWORST night camping ever! If you don’t mind a train horn every hour on the hour all night long right next to the campground, sure go for it! Not to mention the highway on the other side of the campground. Had to make a last minute stop here & what a mistake. WE GOT ZERO SLEEP & it ruined the following day of our trip for us. Even got a horrible migraine as a souvenir! $34 / night, rip off! This place should be free!
