W.P. Franklin North Campground Introduce
For local residents and travelers seeking a 'camping near me' experience in Southwest Florida that prioritizes tranquility and natural beauty over resort-style amenities, W.P. Franklin North Campground, located at 17850 N Franklin Lock Rd, Alva, FL 33920, offers a potentially appealing destination. With a listed phone number of (239) 694-8770 or +1 239-694-8770, this campground is situated near Alva and within reasonable proximity to Fort Myers. Based on recent customer reviews, it presents a mixed picture of positive environmental features and potential concerns regarding management and rules.
The environment of W.P. Franklin North Campground is consistently praised for its scenic beauty and waterfront locations. One reviewer, on their first trip, "loved it" and described the campground as being "for those who want quiet and scenic beauty." This suggests that the area is characterized by attractive natural landscapes, likely involving water views and a peaceful atmosphere. The fact that "all sites are waterfront" is a significant feature, implying that campers can expect picturesque views directly from their campsites and easy access to the water for activities such as fishing or simply enjoying the scenery. The campground is also described as "very well kept," indicating attention to the maintenance and appearance of the grounds.
A key feature highlighted in the positive review is the opportunity for fishing. The mention of "Can fish" suggests that the waterfront access provides a convenient way for anglers to enjoy their hobby directly from the campground. The specific type of water body (likely a river or canal associated with the W.P. Franklin Lock) would determine the types of fish available. Local users interested in fishing should inquire about any specific regulations or licensing requirements for fishing in the area.
The proximity of W.P. Franklin North Campground to Fort Myers is also noted as a benefit. This location offers a balance of a quiet, natural setting while still being within a reasonable driving distance of the amenities, attractions, and services available in Fort Myers. This could be particularly appealing to those who want to enjoy the peace of nature but also have the option to access urban conveniences or visit family and friends in the city.
The staff at W.P. Franklin North Campground are described by one reviewer as "very friendly," contributing to a positive initial impression and a welcoming atmosphere. Friendly staff can significantly enhance the overall camping experience, providing assistance and creating a pleasant environment for guests.
However, a contrasting review raises significant concerns about the behavior and attitude of a specific campground host (identified only as starting with "A"). This guest, who stayed while visiting family, described their experience as "less than pleasant" due to the host's "overbearing attitude." The specific incidents reported include the host repeatedly insinuating that the guest had not locked the gate, even when others arrived later; following the guest multiple times and waiting by the gate in the dark during their walks; and driving onto the guest's campsite in a golf cart without invitation on multiple occasions. This behavior is described as "unprofessional and unwanted" and raises serious questions about the management's approach to guest interaction and privacy.
The second reviewer also mentions a concern regarding cats in the campground, stating that "Cats should not be in the campground, they stress the migratory birds, rabbits and squirrels." This suggests a potential issue with pets on the property and their impact on the local wildlife. For local users who are wildlife enthusiasts or concerned about ecological balance, this might be a factor to consider. It also implies that the campground may have rules regarding pets that are not consistently enforced or that there is a lack of awareness regarding the potential impact of domestic animals on native wildlife.
The stark contrast between the two reviews highlights the importance of considering all available feedback when evaluating W.P. Franklin North Campground. While the natural setting, waterfront sites, fishing opportunities, and proximity to Fort Myers are definite positives, the negative experience reported with the host's behavior is a serious concern that potential guests should be aware of. The issue regarding cats and their potential impact on wildlife is also a point for consideration.
For local users searching for 'camping near me' that emphasizes a quiet and scenic waterfront experience with fishing, W.P. Franklin North Campground appears to offer these environmental benefits. The friendly staff mentioned in one review also suggests a welcoming atmosphere for some guests. However, the reported issues with an overbearing host and concerns about pets and wildlife indicate potential drawbacks that could significantly impact the quality of a stay.
Promotional information for W.P. Franklin North Campground would likely emphasize its waterfront campsites, the tranquility of the location, the opportunities for fishing, and its scenic beauty. The proximity to Fort Myers could also be highlighted as a convenience. Potential marketing materials might showcase the water views and the peaceful natural environment. However, prospective local users should be aware that some guests have reported negative interactions with campground management, which could detract from the overall experience.
In conclusion, W.P. Franklin North Campground near Alva, Florida, offers a potentially attractive 'camping near me' option for those seeking a quiet and scenic waterfront setting with fishing opportunities, conveniently located near Fort Myers. The campground is described as well-kept and boasts friendly staff, according to one reviewer. However, another guest reported a significantly negative experience due to the overbearing behavior of a campground host, and concerns were raised about the presence of cats and their potential impact on local wildlife. Local users should weigh these contrasting reports carefully and consider seeking more recent reviews or contacting the campground directly at (239) 694-8770 or +1 239-694-8770 to inquire about current management practices and pet policies before making a decision to stay at W.P. Franklin North Campground.

W.P. Franklin North Campground Reviews
First trip and loved it. This campground is for those who want quiet and scenic beauty, not for those looking for pools and tiki huts. Can fish. All sites are waterfront, well designed. Very well kept. Close to Fort Myers. Staff very friendly. We will be back. Pics are out our camper door on site 4
Apr 14, 2025 · Lu Ann LoweStayed at this campground while visiting family. A beautiful campground , but the experience was less than pleasant because of the overbearing attitude of the host (starts with A). He constantly stopped me on his golf cart rounds and insinuated multiple times that I had not locked the gate (this when there were many people that arrived later). Followed me several times and then waited by the gate in the dark when I was out walking. Drove his golf cart on to my site without invitation multiple times. This ttention was unprofessional and unwanted. Cats should not be in the campground, they stress the migratory birds, rabbits and squirrels.
Apr 08, 2025 · J LBeautiful little campground with amazing views from nearly every campsite. It was mostly very quiet and peaceful. I loved that there was a little lending library. The grounds were well maintained. The bathroom was in need of a bit of attention. Some areas of it were not very clean, and the shower curtains had definitely seen better days.We couldn't use our picnic table at our site. It had an infestation of bugs/ants that swarmed anything that was set on it, and it was being hollowed out.I can deal with the bathroom issues and the picnic table, but the camp host/office person was problematic for me. My site was directly next to his. If I was visible and his dog was out, I was being barked at. Trash from the camp host's site blew into mine several times, and I had to pick it up. On my first evening there, he made sure I was aware that alcohol was not allowed (not a problem for me one way or the other), but then he proceeded to smoke weed every night. I'm a live and let live person, so if he wants to smoke whatever, but I don't smoke, and it smelled terrible. I ended up vacating my site early because it was so unpleasant camping near him and his dog.
Jul 28, 2024 · alison wonderlandThis is our first ever reservation at an Army Corps of Engineers Campground. BEAUTIFUL and peaceful with stunning sunsets! The area is very well kept and has clean facilities . Sites are spacious and with a covered picnic table and fire grilling pit. All of the staff Volunteers are so friendly and helpful on-site, thank you! Lots of wild life around, loved the turtles! Fun to see the boat traffic going thru the locks. Really enjoying our stay, wish we discovered it years ago! 🐢
