West Lake Campground 1 Introduce
For local users searching for "camping near me" in Iowa, West Lake Campground 1, situated in Neola, presents itself as a potentially attractive option, particularly for those seeking a county park experience. Located in Neola, IA 51559, USA, and reachable by phone at (712) 485-2295 or mobile at +1 712-485-2295, this campground has garnered some feedback from visitors that provides insights into its environment, services, and features.
The environment of West Lake Campground 1 is described as a "Beautiful County Park campground" by one reviewer, suggesting a scenic and natural setting that many campers appreciate. The presence of "lovely singing birds" mentioned by another visitor further emphasizes the natural ambiance and potential for enjoying the local wildlife. However, it's important to note that the abundance of trees, while contributing to the beauty and shade, might interfere with satellite internet services like Starlink.
In terms of services and hookups, West Lake Campground 1 offers electric hookups at the campsites. However, it's crucial to be aware that there are no water or sewer hookups available directly at the individual campsites. For water needs, the campground provides "One water faucet" for all campers to access. Waste disposal for RVs or trailers would require utilizing off-site facilities as there are no sewer hookups. Restroom facilities are basic, consisting of "a pit toilet, an outhouse," which might be a consideration for campers who prefer more modern amenities.
The features of the campground include mostly pull-through sites, which are generally convenient for RVs as they allow for easy entry and exit without the need to back in. However, one reviewer noted that these pull-through sites were often full, leading them to back into a campsite on the side of a hill. This suggests that availability, especially for pull-through sites, might be limited, particularly during peak seasons or weekends. Each campsite is not explicitly described in terms of individual amenities like picnic tables or fire rings, so it's advisable to inquire about these when making reservations or upon arrival.
Connectivity at West Lake Campground 1 appears to be a mixed bag. One significant advantage highlighted by a reviewer is the "Excellent Wifi," which was strong enough to stream video. This can be a major draw for campers who need to stay connected or wish to enjoy online entertainment. However, cellular service was reported as "spotty for calling," and using a cellphone hotspot was unsuccessful. The dense tree cover, while aesthetically pleasing, also poses a limitation for satellite-based internet services like Starlink.
Based on the reviews, West Lake Campground 1 seems to be a popular weekend destination, particularly for residents of Omaha, which is located approximately 25 miles away. This popularity can lead to the campground filling up quickly, especially on weekends. One reviewer who arrived on a Thursday evening noted that the campground filled up fast, with several RVs arriving later unable to find a spot. This suggests that arriving early is highly recommended, especially if you plan to camp on a weekend.
Another interesting observation from a reviewer is the practice of some individuals setting up tents to claim spots, sometimes even a day in advance of the weekend. While this behavior is noted to occur in many places, the park staff encountered were reportedly "annoyed at the tent place holders," indicating it might be a point of contention or a practice the campground discourages. This could potentially impact the availability of sites for those arriving on the intended camping day.
The layout of Loop #1, where one reviewer stayed, was described as "a bit wonky," with RVs parked backwards in pull-through sites, causing the passenger sides of the RVs to face each other. This might affect the sense of privacy or the typical campground flow. However, the reviewer did not have the opportunity to explore the entire park, so this observation might be specific to a particular loop.
Interactions with the park staff were reported as positive, with the staff described as "knowledgeable and friendly," despite their annoyance with the tent placeholders and the parking situation. This suggests that campers can generally expect helpful and courteous service from the campground personnel.
One concerning incident was reported by a reviewer involving a "rude neighbor" whose "loose viscous dog" allegedly attacked the reviewer's wife and their leashed miniature poodle. This is a serious issue related to safety and the enforcement of pet policies within the campground. While this might be an isolated incident, it highlights the importance of responsible pet ownership and the campground's role in ensuring a safe environment for all visitors. If you plan to bring pets, it would be prudent to inquire about the campground's specific pet policies and leash requirements.
Considering the category "camping near me," West Lake Campground 1 offers a natural setting with the convenience of electric hookups. However, potential campers need to be aware of the lack of water and sewer hookups at the campsites and the basic restroom facilities. The availability of excellent Wi-Fi is a significant plus for those needing internet access, but cell service might be unreliable. The campground's popularity, especially on weekends, suggests the need to arrive early to secure a spot, and awareness of the practice of reserving sites with tents in advance might be beneficial.
Promotional information is not provided in the given reviews. To inquire about any potential discounts for local residents, off-season rates, or special offers, it is recommended to contact West Lake Campground 1 directly via phone at (712) 485-2295 or mobile at +1 712-485-2295. They would be the best source for the most current information on pricing and any available promotions.
In conclusion, West Lake Campground 1 offers a beautiful natural environment and the convenience of electric hookups for those seeking "camping near me" in the Neola, Iowa area. However, campers should be prepared for the limited water and restroom facilities, potential crowding on weekends, and the possibility of spotty cell service. The availability of excellent Wi-Fi is a notable advantage. It is advisable to arrive early, especially for weekend stays, and to inquire about pet policies and site-specific amenities when booking. While one negative incident involving a loose dog was reported, overall feedback suggests a pleasant natural camping experience with friendly staff. For the most accurate and up-to-date information, direct contact with the campground is recommended.

Beautiful County Park campground. Electric hookup only. No water or sewer at campsites. There is a pit toilet, an outhouse. One water faucet. Most sites are pull through but they were all full so we backed into a campsite on the side of the hill. Rude neighbor had loose viscous dog that attacked my wife and our miniature poodle that was on a leash. Excellent Wifi. We were able to stream video. Good thing because cellphone service was spotty for calling and cellphone hotspot wouldn't work. Too many trees for Starlink too. Lovely singing birds woke us in the morning.
Jun 14, 2023 · Larry From WisconsinEh.. It was a place for us to crash for a night on the way through from Utah to the Midwest. We stayed in Camp loop #1 on Thursday, June 13th. Rolled in at about 6pm. Glad we got here when we did because it filled up fast. A solid 8 RVs came by looking for a spot after it filled up.It's about 25 miles outside of Omaha so it's seems to be a weekend destination for them. There were a few people that came and set up a tent then left. For 20 bucks people will claim their spot a day ahead of the weekend so be prepared for that. Happens all the time everywhere but some places have cracked down on it.Loop #1 is a bit wonky, People park in the pull throughs backwards so the passenger sides of the RVs are looking at each other... Didn't have a chance to check out the park, from what we saw it looked nice. The park staff we encountered were knowledgeable and friendly but annoyed at the tent place holders and wonky parking. So, come early and forget just passing through on a weekend.
Jun 14, 2024 · supernauticaThis is a small camping area, but still offers a lot. There is one restroom location with plumping and showers. RV, Tent, and cabins are available for camping. There are some good trails here along with canoe and paddle boat rental. They have a dock for boats with telling motors being allowed. Also a sand volleyball court and at least one basketball hoop.
Jul 19, 2020 · Nick RedinbaughCampground 1 has 6 pull through spots and 4 back in spots. Electric only at each site. Very quiet and relaxing spot. The park is extremely well maintained. They usually mow on Wednesdays if you care about that stuff.
Sep 16, 2023 · Aaron grapLove this campground! 6 pull thru sites. Spacious with a few big trees for shade.
