Pottawattamie County Fair Campground, Avoca Introduce
For local users searching for "camping near me" in the Avoca, Iowa area, the Pottawattamie County Fair Campground, located at 307 W Lincoln St, Avoca, IA 51521, USA, offers a budget-conscious option primarily suited for short, overnight stays. You can contact them at (712) 307-0509 or +1 712-307-0509. Based on recent customer reviews, it's crucial to have realistic expectations regarding the campground's cleanliness and overall upkeep.
As the name suggests, this campground is situated on the grounds of the Pottawattamie County Fair in Avoca. This location likely means that the primary purpose of the area is to accommodate activities and events related to the county fair. Outside of fair season, it appears to function as a basic, no-frills campground catering mainly to travelers seeking a brief stopover. The environment is therefore likely functional and may lack the aesthetic appeal and extensive amenities found in dedicated leisure campgrounds.
One of the recurring themes in the customer reviews is the issue of cleanliness and maintenance. One reviewer noted "Trash floats about the property, very unkempt place, dog poop everywhere." This paints a concerning picture of the campground's general upkeep and suggests that regular cleaning and maintenance might be lacking. For local users considering a stay, especially with pets or children, this is a significant factor to take into account.
Another practical piece of advice from a reviewer is to "before you park and set up walk about to check where to park, make sure there is water on that site." This indicates potential inconsistencies in the availability of water hookups at all sites, requiring campers to inspect their chosen spot before settling in. This lack of consistent service can be an inconvenience for travelers who expect basic hookups to be readily available.
The campground operates on a "self check in" system, which is often associated with budget-friendly or less managed facilities. While self-check-in can be convenient for late arrivals, it might also contribute to the lack of oversight and maintenance issues mentioned in the reviews. The cost is explicitly stated by one reviewer as "$25," reinforcing its status as a low-cost option ("You get what you pay for").
Noise levels might also be a concern, as one reviewer mentioned that it is "not a quiet area if school is in session." This suggests that the proximity to a school might result in daytime noise, which could be disruptive for campers seeking a peaceful environment, especially during the academic year.
Despite the cleanliness and potential noise issues, the campground does offer essential hookups for RVs. One reviewer mentioned that "Sites have electric, water and sewer hook-ups." The availability of full hookups (electricity, water, and sewer) is a significant advantage for RV travelers, providing the necessary connections for a comfortable overnight stay. This suggests that while the overall environment might be unkempt, the basic utilities for RVs are provided.
The "weakest link" of the campground is identified as the "Bathroom." One reviewer found it difficult to imagine anyone being "brave enough to take a shower in there," highlighting potentially severe cleanliness or condition issues. However, they also noted that someone had seemingly "settle in" with their toiletries, suggesting that the facility might be used by some despite its poor state. This stark contrast underscores the likely variability in the condition and usability of the bathroom facilities.
Considering the feedback, the environment of the Pottawattamie County Fair Campground, Avoca, appears to be basic and potentially unkempt, with issues of trash and pet waste. Its location on fairgrounds suggests open areas with minimal landscaping. The services include electric, water, and sewer hookups at the sites, a self-check-in system, and a bathroom facility of questionable condition. Features are limited, primarily focusing on the hookups for RVs and its function as a stopover.
There is no promotional information provided in the reviews. The low price point ($25 as mentioned by one reviewer) could be considered an implicit promotion for budget-conscious travelers prioritizing basic hookups over cleanliness and aesthetics. The fact that it is described as a "go-to stop over" and "good enough for one night stay in passing" suggests its suitability for travelers needing a brief and affordable place to park their RV and utilize essential services.
For local users searching for "camping near me" in Avoca, IA, the Pottawattamie County Fair Campground offers a very basic and budget-friendly option with full RV hookups. However, potential visitors must be aware of the significant concerns raised regarding cleanliness, potential noise from a nearby school, and the poor condition of the bathroom facilities. It is strongly recommended to heed the advice of a reviewer to walk around and inspect the site and water availability before setting up. If your priority is a cheap overnight stop with essential hookups and you are willing to tolerate less than ideal conditions, this campground might suffice. However, if cleanliness, quiet, and well-maintained facilities are important to you, exploring other "camping near me" options in the area would be advisable.
In conclusion, the Pottawattamie County Fair Campground in Avoca, IA, provides a low-cost, self-check-in option for RV travelers needing electric, water, and sewer hookups for a short stay. However, potential campers should be prepared for a potentially unkempt environment with trash and pet waste, possible noise from a nearby school, and a bathroom facility that has been described as being in very poor condition. It is best suited for those prioritizing budget and basic utilities for an overnight stop over comfort and cleanliness. Local users seeking a more pleasant and well-maintained camping experience should likely look elsewhere.

Oct 16, 2024 · Maria Rominger (Threedogsandacatrv)It is a go-to stop over. Sites have electric, water and sewer hook-ups. It is a self-check-in, so you get what you pay for $25. Bathroom is the weakest link. It is hard to imagine that anyone would be brave enough to take a shower in there, but then again someone was comfortable enough to "settle" in with all their soaps and shampoos, etc.
Oct 27, 2023 · Gee GladThe camp area was nice enough. There are not many fire pits or picnic tables. However, the bathrooms are terrible. It appears they haven’t been cleaned in some time, if ever.
Jul 13, 2024 · Heather HargraveAwesome little campground! Quiet, lovely. Full hookups, nice tall shade trees. If you don't need the bathrooms, don't use them as they are rough. But for $20 it's perfect!
Jun 23, 2023 · Rani ColglazierGood over night stop in rv. Easy off and on highway. Host and long term campers very friendly. One of the long term campers drove us to the grocery store so we didn't have to disconnect our toad. Then took us for a tour of the small community providing information.
