Whiskey Rock Bay Campground Introduce
For local residents seeking "camping near me" in the scenic Priest Lake region of Idaho, Whiskey Rock Bay Campground, located at 21870 Forest Road 278, Bayview, ID 83803, offers a lakeside camping experience with appealing features such as a swimming beach and small boat launch. However, recent feedback from campers also highlights important considerations regarding weekend noise levels, road conditions, and the availability of basic amenities. This introduction aims to provide a detailed and objective overview of Whiskey Rock Bay Campground based on the available reviews, covering its environment, services, features, and accessibility to help local users make informed decisions.
Lakeside Environment with Scenic Views: Beach and Boat Access on Priest Lake
The user reviews consistently praise the natural beauty of Whiskey Rock Bay Campground and its location on Priest Lake. One reviewer describes it as having a "beautiful beach with the best views!" and another mentions a "Great little beach" with "Water is crystal clear." These comments highlight the attractive waterfront environment, ideal for swimming and enjoying the pristine waters of Priest Lake. The presence of a swimming beach suggests a family-friendly area where both adults and children can enjoy the water safely.
In addition to the beach, the campground also features a "small boat launch," making it a convenient option for campers who wish to bring their own small watercraft, such as kayaks, canoes, or small fishing boats. This provides direct access to Priest Lake for boating and exploring its scenic shores and waters. Several campsites are noted to have "water access," which would be highly desirable for those wanting to be right on the lakefront.
The overall environment is characterized by the natural beauty of Priest Lake, known for its clear, deep waters and surrounded by lush forests and the Selkirk Mountains. Campers can likely expect picturesque views of the lake, especially from the waterfront campsites. The sunsets are also mentioned as being "Beautiful," adding to the scenic appeal of the location.
However, one crucial aspect of the environment to consider is the potential for noise during weekend stays. One reviewer explicitly warns, "If camping over the weekend expect loud and obnoxious people fighting and playing loud music late into the night on the docks." This suggests that the peacefulness of the lakeside setting might be compromised during peak times due to the behavior of some visitors. Local users seeking a quiet weekend retreat should be aware of this potential issue.
Services and Amenities: Basic Facilities with a Note on Toilet Paper
The user reviews provide limited details about the specific services and amenities available at Whiskey Rock Bay Campground. One reviewer mentions the presence of "2 vault outhouses that may or may not have tp so bring your own." This indicates that the restroom facilities are basic, non-flush toilets, and their maintenance regarding supplies like toilet paper can be inconsistent. Therefore, it is advisable for campers to come prepared with their own toilet paper and possibly hand sanitizer.
The reviews do not mention the availability of potable water sources, fire rings, picnic tables, or trash disposal facilities. Given the mention of vault outhouses, it is reasonable to assume that the campground offers a relatively rustic camping experience with potentially limited developed amenities. Campers should be prepared to be self-sufficient, especially regarding water and waste management, unless further information from official sources indicates otherwise.
The fact that "Cell works in campground" is a notable positive mentioned by one reviewer, indicating that mobile phone service is available, which can be important for communication and safety.
The lack of information about campsite hookups (for water, electricity, or sewer) suggests that Whiskey Rock Bay Campground likely caters primarily to tent campers and RVers who are prepared for dry camping.
Features and Accessibility: Waterfront Camping, Boat Launch, but Challenging Road Access
The key features of Whiskey Rock Bay Campground include its direct access to Priest Lake with a swimming beach and a small boat launch. The availability of "Several campsites with water access" is a significant draw for those wanting to camp right by the lake.
However, accessibility to the campground is a notable concern. One reviewer states, "Rough road the last 6 miles." This indicates that the final stretch of the journey to the campground involves driving on a poorly maintained road, which could be challenging for some vehicles, especially those with low clearance or towing trailers. Local users should factor this rough road condition into their travel plans and ensure their vehicles are suitable for such terrain.
Another crucial piece of access information is the warning against using Google Maps directions, as they are reported to be "wrong." The recommended alternative is to "Follow the signs for gold bar lodge then it's a straight shot." This highlights the importance of relying on local signage rather than GPS navigation when traveling to Whiskey Rock Bay Campground.
The reviewer also mentions that "Lots of off road vehicles play in that area so stay on your side of the road." This suggests that the surrounding area is popular for off-road vehicle use, and campers should be aware of potential traffic and exercise caution when driving on access roads.
Finally, the reviewer notes that the "Easiest way to get there is by boat but dock is often full on the weekend." This implies that the campground is also accessible by water, which might be an alternative for some, but the limited dock space on weekends could make this option challenging during peak times.
Promotional Information: None Available
Based on the provided user reviews, there is no promotional information available for Whiskey Rock Bay Campground. Campgrounds managed by the Forest Service or other public entities often do not have specific promotions in the same way that private campgrounds might. Local users interested in camping here should consult official sources such as the USDA Forest Service website for Priest Lake or recreation.gov for information on reservations, fees, and any current advisories.
Given the popularity of Priest Lake and the desirable waterfront location of Whiskey Rock Bay Campground, it is advisable to make reservations in advance, especially if planning a weekend stay. Information on how to book campsites can typically be found on the official websites mentioned above.
In conclusion, Whiskey Rock Bay Campground at Priest Lake, ID, offers a beautiful lakeside camping experience with a swimming beach, small boat launch, and scenic views. The availability of waterfront campsites is a significant draw. However, local users should be aware of the potential for loud noise from other campers on weekends and the challenging road conditions for the last six miles of the journey. The campground provides basic amenities, including vault outhouses (with uncertain toilet paper supply), and cell service. It is crucial to follow local signage rather than Google Maps for directions. Despite these considerations, the natural beauty and lake access make Whiskey Rock Bay Campground a potentially rewarding destination for those seeking "camping near me" in the Priest Lake area, provided they are prepared for a rustic experience and potential weekend noise.
Local users are encouraged to visit the USDA Forest Service website for Priest Lake or recreation.gov for the most up-to-date information on reservations, fees, road conditions, and amenities at Whiskey Rock Bay Campground. Contacting the Priest Lake Ranger District directly at the provided phone numbers ((208) 263-5111 or +1 208-263-5111) may also provide valuable insights and current conditions.

Jun 12, 2023 · Kat McClainIt's a rough drive but so worth it!
Jul 29, 2024 · Josie BWe found out about the camp grounds that were perfect. We took our 26ft class C rv pulling our 25ft pontoon boat. Came threw Lakeview and man it was a horrible drive! Them roads are not.meant for an rv let alone pulling a boat . Once you get to the end it was paradise ! Very beautiful! Nice dock ,locals ,that boat in BTW were awesome. No one believed we towed our boat up threw them mountains . But we made it and will go back . Next time we will launch the boat in bayview and boat in. We had a great time! The roads are bad! Took us 3.5 hrs at night to work the road but hey we did it and made it out. Wouldn't recommend anyone driving a rv up there unless you plan on a crazy drive 😜 washed out road in several areas ,pot holes galore.
