Willow Lake Campground Introduce
For local users searching for "camping near me" who are drawn to breathtaking natural beauty and are comfortable with a more primitive camping experience, Willow Lake Campground near Pinedale, Wyoming, presents a unique opportunity. While one visitor notes that the campground itself may not be highly organized, the overwhelming consensus is that Willow Lake is undeniably stunning, offering a picturesque setting for outdoor enthusiasts.
The primary draw of Willow Lake Campground is undoubtedly Willow Lake itself. Described as "stunning," the lake provides a beautiful environment for a variety of water-based activities. In particular, it is highlighted as being "perfect for paddle boarding or kayaking," and there is currently "no fee to camp or use of non motorized watercraft." This makes it an especially attractive destination for those who enjoy peaceful paddling and exploring the serene waterscapes of Wyoming.
However, it's crucial for potential visitors to be aware that the campground is described as "not really an organized campground," lacking numbered sites and offering a "limited area to spread out." This suggests a more informal camping arrangement where finding a suitable spot might require some searching, and defined personal space may be less apparent than in more structured campgrounds. Campers should be prepared for a more open and less demarcated camping environment.
In terms of amenities, Willow Lake Campground is quite basic. The information indicates the presence of only "one restroom," which could be a significant consideration depending on the number of campers. Notably, there are "no tables, fire rings, water or trash" facilities provided. This reinforces the primitive nature of the camping experience at Willow Lake. Campers must be entirely self-sufficient, bringing their own water supply, cooking equipment (including a way to contain fires safely), and be prepared to pack out all of their trash to maintain the cleanliness of this beautiful area.
On a positive note regarding infrastructure, it appears that some recent improvements have been made. A visitor mentioned that "a new boat ramp and dock was installed recently." This suggests enhanced access to Willow Lake for those wishing to launch boats, further increasing its appeal for water recreation enthusiasts.
An important piece of information for anyone planning to visit Willow Lake Campground is the nature of the access road. It is described as "very very steep narrow last 1 mile to get over the final ridge," making "pulling a big trailer a bit of a risk." This is a critical consideration for those traveling with larger recreational vehicles or trailers. While one visitor noted seeing "about 15 large trailers there," they also observed that there were "no vehicles, no people no camps setup," leading to the speculation that "the locals just stash and leave their trailers up there to hold down their spot...for how long is unclear." This unusual situation regarding unattended trailers might be something to be aware of, although it doesn't directly impact the camping experience of those who do set up camp.
As of June 2021, camping at Willow Lake was free. However, a notice on the kiosk board indicated "a proposed fee of $10 in future." This means that while camping is currently free, visitors should be prepared for the possibility of a $10 nightly fee being implemented at some point. It would be wise to check for any updates on fees before planning a trip.
The lack of organized sites and amenities, coupled with the potentially challenging access road, suggests that Willow Lake Campground is best suited for experienced campers who are comfortable with a more rustic and self-reliant camping style. The reward for navigating these challenges is access to a stunning lake perfect for non-motorized water sports and the opportunity to camp in a beautiful, albeit undeveloped, natural setting.
For local users seeking "camping near me" who prioritize scenic beauty and water activities like paddle boarding and kayaking over organized facilities, and who are comfortable with primitive camping and a potentially difficult access road for large trailers, Willow Lake Campground offers a compelling option. The current lack of camping fees is an added bonus, although this may change in the future. Be sure to come prepared with all necessary supplies, be mindful of the steep and narrow access road, and be ready to embrace a more informal and self-sufficient camping experience in exchange for the stunning beauty of Willow Lake.
In summary, Willow Lake Campground provides access to a truly stunning lake that is ideal for paddle boarding and kayaking, with currently free camping. However, it is characterized by a lack of organized sites, limited space, only one restroom, and no tables, fire rings, water, or trash facilities, indicating a primitive camping environment. The very steep and narrow access road, particularly the last mile, poses a challenge for large trailers. Despite these limitations, the lake's beauty and the opportunity for non-motorized water sports make it a potentially rewarding destination for well-prepared and adventurous local campers seeking a less conventional "camping near me" experience.

Willow Lake Campground Reviews
This lake is stunning, however the campground is not. Not really an organized campground, no numbered sites, limited area to spread out. One restroom. Looks like a new boat ramp and dock was installed recently. Camping is free as of 6-2021 but a notice on the kiosk board notes a proposed fee of $10 in future. No tables, fire rings, water or trash. Note that the access road is very very steep narrow last 1 mile to get over the final ridge, so pulling a big trailer is a bit of a risk....however there were about 15 large trailers there when I visited, but no vehicles, no people no camps setup...seems the locals just stash and leave their trailers up there to hold down their spot..for how long is unclear.
