Zaleski State Forest Atkinson Ridge Hunters Camp Introduce
For local users in and around McArthur, Ohio, seeking a "camping near me" experience deeply immersed in nature, Zaleski State Forest Atkinson Ridge Hunters Camp, located on Township Hwy 5, McArthur, OH 45651, USA, offers a unique opportunity. Situated within the expansive Zaleski State Forest, this campground caters particularly to hunters but also appeals to nature lovers seeking a more rugged and primitive outdoor experience. You can reach them at (740) 596-5781 or +1 740-596-5781 for inquiries, although the registration process has specific requirements that local users should be aware of.
The environment of Zaleski State Forest Atkinson Ridge Hunters Camp is characterized by the "beautiful country" of southeastern Ohio. The landscape is described as "rugged" with "lots of hills," indicating that local users should be prepared for physically demanding terrain, making it ideal for those who enjoy hiking and exploring more challenging natural environments. The abundance of wildlife is a significant draw, with one visitor reporting sightings of squirrels, turkeys, deer, and grouse in a single day. This suggests a rich and diverse ecosystem perfect for wildlife viewing and photography. The campground's location within Zaleski State Forest ensures a deep immersion in nature, surrounded by dense woodlands and the natural sounds of the forest.
The services and features at Atkinson Ridge Hunters Camp are likely to be more basic and geared towards a primitive camping experience, consistent with a hunters' camp within a state forest. While specific amenities are not detailed extensively in the reviews, we can infer some likely offerings:
- **Campsites:** These would likely be primitive sites suitable for tents. Given the "hunters camp" designation, there might be designated areas that can accommodate small trailers or campers used by hunters, but hookups for water, electricity, and sewer are unlikely in a state forest setting focused on primitive camping.
- **Fire Rings:** Campfires are a common element of the camping experience, and it's probable that each campsite would be equipped with a fire ring for safe campfires and cooking.
- **Picnic Tables:** Similar to fire rings, picnic tables are a standard feature at many campgrounds, providing a designated space for eating and other camp activities.
- **Potable Water Source:** Access to a source of potable water for drinking and cooking is essential, although the availability and location within the camp might vary.
- **Restroom Facilities:** The negative review specifically mentions the smell of the bathroom, indicating the presence of at least a basic restroom facility. However, the poor condition reported is a significant concern that local users should be aware of.
- **Registration Area:** The review notes that "Registration is required," suggesting a designated area or process for checking in upon arrival.
- **Watch Tower:** A notable feature mentioned is a watch tower that offers a "beautiful" view of the surrounding area. This could be a significant attraction for those interested in panoramic vistas of the forest.
An important feature highlighted in one of the reviews is the registration requirement: "you need a hunter's license to register." This is a crucial piece of information for local users considering camping here. It strongly suggests that this campground is primarily intended for hunters utilizing Zaleski State Forest, and a valid hunting license might be necessary to stay overnight. Non-hunters might face restrictions or be required to obtain specific permits; therefore, it is essential for local users to inquire about the specific registration requirements when contacting the campground.
The stark contrast in the two reviews provides a balanced yet cautious perspective for local users. One reviewer expresses love for the beautiful country and great hunting opportunities, emphasizing the rugged terrain and abundant wildlife. This paints an appealing picture for those seeking a natural and challenging outdoor experience. However, the other review raises a significant concern about the cleanliness of the bathroom facilities, describing a very unpleasant odor. This is a serious issue that potential visitors should be aware of and perhaps inquire about the current condition before planning a stay.
Promotional information is not provided in the reviews. As a state forest campground, the pricing is likely to be relatively low compared to private campgrounds, but local users should contact the provided phone number to confirm current rates and any permit or registration fees, especially given the hunter's license requirement. Information about seasonal availability and any rules or regulations specific to the campground and Zaleski State Forest would also be important to obtain.
In conclusion, Zaleski State Forest Atkinson Ridge Hunters Camp offers local users a "camping near me" option deeply embedded in the natural beauty of southeastern Ohio. Its rugged terrain and abundant wildlife make it an attractive destination for hunting and nature enthusiasts. The presence of a watch tower with beautiful views is a notable feature. However, the strong negative feedback regarding the cleanliness of the bathroom facilities is a significant concern that potential visitors must consider. Additionally, the requirement of a hunter's license for registration is a crucial piece of information that might restrict access for non-hunters. Local users interested in this campground should contact (740) 596-5781 to inquire about registration requirements, current conditions of the facilities, and any other relevant information to ensure it meets their needs for a wilderness camping experience.

Zaleski State Forest Atkinson Ridge Hunters Camp Reviews
I love it down here. Such beautiful country and great hunting. It is rugged country with lots of hills so be prepared to get some exercise. In one day alone I have seen squirrels, turkeys, deer, and grouse.
Oct 30, 2022 · Cody HowardWas looking to spend the night here, but the bathroom smelled so bad I could smell it from 30ft away. Registration is required and you need a hunter's license to register. I did go on the watch tower and the view was beautiful.
