Based on enthusiastic reviews from fellow campers, Ann Lake Campground provides a "beautiful and so wild" setting with unique features that cater to both individual families and larger groups looking for a memorable outdoor getaway.
One of the most consistently praised aspects of Ann Lake Campground is the generous spacing between campsites. One family, who has made it an annual tradition, highlighted that "there is plenty of open space between campsites." This is a significant advantage for campers who value privacy and a sense of immersion in nature without feeling crowded by their neighbors. This spacious layout contributes to a more relaxed and enjoyable camping experience, allowing families and individuals to spread out and truly appreciate their surroundings. For local users seeking a "camping near me" location where they can enjoy their own space, Ann Lake Campground stands out.
For larger gatherings, Ann Lake Campground offers impressive facilities. The same family noted that "group campsites are large and have enough tables to occupy large groups." This makes it an ideal destination for family reunions, gatherings of friends, or other group camping events. The availability of ample table space ensures that large parties can comfortably dine and socialize together, enhancing the communal aspect of group camping. Local users planning a camping trip with a larger number of people will find this feature particularly beneficial.
Nature enthusiasts will be delighted by the vibrant wildlife that calls Ann Lake Campground home. Campers have reported "hearing the loons, geese, cranes, coyotes and owls at night." This auditory backdrop creates a truly immersive and wild camping experience, allowing guests to connect with the natural sounds of the Minnesota wilderness. For local users who appreciate wildlife viewing and the sounds of nature, Ann Lake Campground offers a unique and enriching environment.
The affordability of Ann Lake Campground is another significant draw. The annual returning family mentioned that it's "$17 a night," making it a very budget-friendly option for a local camping getaway. This reasonable price point, combined with the beautiful and wild setting, makes Ann Lake Campground an excellent value for those seeking "camping near me" without wanting to spend a lot of money.
Adding to the appeal for families with children is the abundance of opportunities for exploration and play. The reviewer noted that "there is plenty of exploring and mucking around the kids can do." This suggests that the campground and its surroundings offer a safe and engaging environment for children to explore nature, get active, and enjoy outdoor adventures. This family-friendly aspect makes Ann Lake Campground a great choice for local users with kids.
Another camper who enjoyed van camping at site 19 also highlighted the spaciousness and privacy of the individual sites. They noted that "site 19, which offered lots of space and privacy," and observed that "all the sites seem to be spaced apart well." However, they also pointed out that there is some variability among sites, with some having "less tree coverage than others, leaving them more exposed," and differences in "ground space and distance from the road." This suggests that local users might want to inquire about specific site characteristics when making a reservation to choose one that best suits their preferences for shade, space, and proximity to amenities.
For those seeking a more rustic experience, Ann Lake Campground offers "several walk-in sites available too." These sites likely require a short walk from the parking area, providing an even greater sense of seclusion and immersion in nature for campers willing to carry their gear. This option caters to local users looking for a more "semi primitive camping experience," as described by one reviewer.
Essential amenities are also available at Ann Lake Campground. The van camper noted that "potable water is available, and the vault toilets are well maintained." Access to clean drinking water is crucial for any camping trip, and well-maintained restroom facilities contribute significantly to a comfortable experience, even in a semi-primitive setting. The presence of these basic but essential amenities enhances the appeal of Ann Lake Campground for a wider range of local users.
The campground is also supported by dedicated camp hosts, James and Kelly, who were described as "awesome!" Their presence and active involvement in the campground, such as biking through and reminding campers about quiet hours (10pm-8am) regarding generator use, contribute to a well-managed and respectful environment. This ensures that all campers can enjoy a peaceful night's rest. The positive interaction with the camp hosts adds to the welcoming atmosphere of Ann Lake Campground.
Potential visitors should be aware that "the road has some bumpy spots throughout, so be mindful" while driving within the campground. This is a minor consideration but worth noting for local users planning their trip to ensure a safe and comfortable arrival and departure.
For those looking to enjoy water activities, Ann Lake itself features a "nice and sandy" beach, although it is described as "smaller." Despite its size, the beach provides an opportunity for swimming, sunbathing, and enjoying the lake. The reviewer noted that when they visited, there were only about four other groups, allowing for plenty of space on the beach. This suggests that even with other campers present, the lake area can still offer a relaxing experience.

Ann Lake Campground Reviews
My family and i have been coming here once a year for a camping trip. Its beautiful and so wild. We love that there is plenty of open space between campsites. And group campsites are large and have enough tables to occupy large groups. We love hearing the loons, geese, cranes, coyotes and owls at night. Our favorite place to camp 100%. Its $17 a night and there is plenty of exploring and mucking around the kids can do
Sep 26, 2024 · Yuvia 452Had a really nice time van camping here. We had site 19, which offered lots of space and privacy. All the sites seem to be spaced apart well, but some sites have less tree coverage than others, leaving them more exposed and they definitely vary in ground space and distance from the road. There are several walk-in sites available too. Potable water is available, and the vault toilets are well maintained. We saw the camp hosts (James and Kelly, they were awesome!) bike through a few times and even heard them reminding folks that the generators need to be turned off by quite time (10pm-8am), which we appreciated. Road has some bumpy spots throughout, so be mindful. The beach was nice and sandy, but it is smaller. Fortunately, only about 4 other groups were there when we went and had plenty of space. We will definitely come back and highly recommend for those interested in a semi primitive camping experience!
Aug 17, 2024 · Britta RasmussenHad fun! There’s a lot of sandy spots by the lake the set up the tent by. There’s a fire pit and a bench. Not much parking other than one spot at the site. I think it was entirely too close to the other campers. That’s my fault for not doing enough research. You will get poison ivy in them woods so be careful. Other than that it’s an okay spot to spend the night with the kids. Not for younger/louder crowds.
Aug 22, 2024 · Mckenzie AndersonA fantastic place to camp even for a night!! There’s a picnic table and fire pit at each of the campsites. The fee is $17 which is reasonable for a nice inset campsite with a decent amount of space. The campground hosts I met were the sweetest people I have met on my travels!!!
Sep 03, 2024 · EmberGreat spot for first-come, first serve camping on or near a beautiful lake. The accommodations are simple but present where needed, the sites are big, there are a ton of trails, beaches/easy access to the lake, it’s fairly quiet and the campground hosts were above par!! We noticed the northern lights were peaking from our site and were able to catch a spectacular show when we drive just a bit out for a clear shot north. IMO the best sites are 9 & 34, 34 is a walk in but it’s not too far and views are similar to 9. 10 is nice but one of the trails runs right through the back of the site which was very confusing for the doggo. Because this is a state forest campground, there’s no ice or firewood for sale but there are gas stations near by. Fall colors were incredible this time of year!
