Based on feedback from recent visitors, this campground offers a unique setting with spacious campsites, ample shade, and impressive fire pits, all while being somewhat removed from more heavily trafficked areas. The description suggests an ideal location for groups looking to enjoy a more private and immersive "camping near me" experience.
The environment of Appletree Group Campground, situated in Topton, NC, places it within the scenic western part of North Carolina, likely surrounded by the natural beauty of the Appalachian Mountains and the Nantahala National Forest. The reviews highlight key aspects of this environment. One user described it as "one of the nicer campgrounds" and noted "large grassy areas with good shade," indicating a comfortable and pleasant setting for pitching tents and spending time outdoors. The presence of mature trees providing ample shade is a significant benefit, especially during warmer months, enhancing the enjoyment of your "camping near me" trip. Another reviewer mentioned that the campsite is "very secluded" and even enjoyed the "5 mile drive down the dirt road to get here," emphasizing the sense of being away from it all. This suggests that Appletree Group Campground offers a more remote and tranquil environment compared to campgrounds located directly off main roads, which can be a major draw for groups seeking a peaceful "camping near me" retreat.
As a "group campground," the primary feature of Appletree Group Campground is its design to accommodate larger parties traveling together. The review mentioning "about 6 sites" that are "large" suggests that while the campground might be relatively small in terms of the number of individual sites, each site is spacious enough to accommodate multiple tents or a larger group of people. This layout is ideal for families, friends, or organizations looking for a "camping near me" location where they can stay together in close proximity. The large grassy areas mentioned in the review would provide ample space for group activities, games, and simply enjoying the outdoors together. This focus on accommodating groups is a key differentiator for Appletree Group Campground when considering "camping near me" options.
A notable feature highlighted in the reviews is the presence of "huge fire pits large enough to burn large fires!" This is a significant amenity for groups who enjoy gathering around a campfire for cooking, warmth, and socializing in the evenings. The size of the fire pits suggests that they can accommodate substantial fires, perfect for storytelling, roasting marshmallows, or simply enjoying the ambiance of a large blaze under the stars. This feature adds to the appeal of Appletree Group Campground as a "camping near me" destination that encourages communal experiences and outdoor enjoyment.
The services offered at Appletree Group Campground can be inferred to include basic amenities necessary for group camping. While not explicitly listed, one can typically expect a group campground to provide designated campsites, access to potable water sources (which might be communal), and toilet facilities (likely vault toilets in a more secluded setting). Given the emphasis on a more rustic and secluded experience, it is less likely that the campground offers extensive amenities like electrical hookups or shower facilities. However, the positive reviews suggest that the essential services provided are satisfactory for those seeking this type of "camping near me" experience. Local users planning a trip should confirm the availability of specific services when contacting the campground.
The feature of seclusion, as emphasized by the reviewer who enjoyed the drive down the dirt road, is a significant draw for Appletree Group Campground. For local users specifically seeking "camping near me" that offers a sense of privacy and escape from crowded areas, this campground appears to be an excellent choice. The 5-mile drive on a dirt road suggests that the campground is somewhat off the beaten path, contributing to a more peaceful and undisturbed natural environment. This seclusion enhances the "camping near me" experience for groups looking to connect with nature and enjoy a quieter setting.

Appletree Group Campground Reviews
One of the nicer campgrounds that features about 6 sites. Large grassy areas with good shade. Huge fire pits large enough to burn large fires!
Aug 11, 2019 · Cris SleightholmGreat campsite that is very secluded. I actually enjoyed the 5 mile drive down the dirt road to get here.
Jul 18, 2023 · Jason RobertsI loved playing here as a child growing up in the area
Mar 24, 2025 · Jacqueline WoodardWe reserved campsite D which is a 20 person site (pretty sure). There are a few decent spots for hammocks. There are a few decent spots for tents 1-6 people. Anything bigger and you might not find a decent spot, but could still set up. The grassy area is terraced to accommodate a lot of tents, but nature has taken a toll on it. One of the bathrooms wasn't flushing great, but we notified the maintenance guy and he was going to notify the forest service. The pavilion was awesome. The area is close to the river so great for white noise sleepers. Zero cell phone reception.
