Ashley Lake South Campground Introduce
For local adventurers seeking "camping near me" around Kalispell, Montana, Ashley Lake South Campground presents a wonderful opportunity to immerse yourself in nature and enjoy the beauty of Ashley Lake. Located in Kalispell, MT 59901, USA, this campground offers a serene escape with picturesque views and a tranquil atmosphere, perfect for a weekend retreat or a longer outdoor adventure.
Ashley Lake South Campground is particularly appealing to those who appreciate a more rustic camping experience. The reviews from fellow campers highlight the campground's natural beauty and the overall positive experience it offers. While it's important to note that the facilities are more basic, focusing on the essential elements of camping, the stunning environment and peaceful setting more than compensate for the lack of modern amenities.
Environment and Location:
The campground's prime location directly by Ashley Lake is a major draw. Imagine waking up to breathtaking lake views and having the opportunity to easily access the water for potential activities such as swimming, fishing, or simply enjoying the scenery. The presence of "lots of trees and shade" is another significant advantage, especially during the warmer months. Campers can readily find ideal spots to hang hammocks and relax in the cool shade, enhancing the overall comfort of their stay. The availability of fire circles at the campsites allows for cozy evenings spent around a crackling fire, perfect for cooking and sharing stories under the stars.
One reviewer specifically mentioned that their chosen campsite was "right next to the water," indicating the potential for highly desirable waterfront locations within the campground. This proximity to the lake further enhances the appeal for those seeking a truly immersive lakeside camping experience.
However, it's crucial to be aware of a noted drawback: "the road was super bumpy to get to the campsite itself." This suggests that accessing the campground may require navigating uneven terrain, which could be a consideration depending on your vehicle and comfort level. Despite this, the reviewer still rated the campground highly, indicating that the beauty and tranquility of the location outweigh the challenging access for many.
Another visitor commented on the overall beauty of the lake and the quality of the campsites. They did mention that the area can be "very busy," suggesting that Ashley Lake South Campground is a popular destination, especially during peak season. This popularity is a testament to its appeal but also implies that securing a campsite, particularly on weekends and holidays, might require advance planning or arriving early.
Services and Amenities:
It is essential for prospective campers to be aware of the limited amenities at Ashley Lake South Campground. As explicitly stated in a review, "There is no running water, just an outhouse." This means campers will need to bring their own water for drinking, cooking, and washing. The absence of running water also implies no flush toilets or sinks. However, the positive aspect highlighted is that "the outhouse thankfully did have toilet paper" during a mid-July visit, indicating that basic maintenance is likely performed.
The availability of "fire circles" at the campsites is a valuable amenity, providing a designated and safer space for campfires. The presence of "flat sites to pitch a tent" is also reassuring for those who prefer tent camping, ensuring a more comfortable and stable setup.
Based on the provided information, other typical campground amenities such as picnic tables, trash disposal, or designated parking spots are not explicitly mentioned. Campers should likely be prepared for a more primitive camping experience and bring all necessary supplies and equipment, including water containers, cooking gear, and waste disposal bags.
Features and Unique Aspects:
The primary features of Ashley Lake South Campground are its stunning natural setting and the opportunity for a peaceful lakeside camping experience. The abundance of trees and shade creates a comfortable environment, especially during hot summer days. The proximity to Ashley Lake offers recreational opportunities and beautiful scenery. The provision of fire circles enhances the traditional camping experience, allowing for campfires and outdoor cooking.
The contrast between the campground's beauty and the challenging access road is a unique aspect to consider. While the bumpy road might deter some, it likely contributes to the campground's more secluded and natural feel, away from more developed areas. The popularity of the lake and campground, as indicated by the "very busy" comment, suggests that it is a well-regarded destination despite its basic facilities.
The lack of running water defines the nature of camping here as more rustic and self-sufficient. Campers who prefer more developed campgrounds with modern amenities might find this limiting, while those seeking a more authentic and less crowded natural experience might appreciate the simplicity.

The provided information does not include any specific promotional offers or discounts for Ashley Lake South Campground. However, the consistently positive reviews emphasizing the beautiful location and peaceful atmosphere serve as strong organic promotion. Ashley Lake South Campground Reviews
Wonderful campground! This was a very clean campground with a beautiful view and just what I needed for the weekend. There is no running water, just an outhouse. However, the outhouse thankfully did have toilet paper in it when I visited on a Friday in mid July. There are lots of trees and shade to hang up hammocks, fire circles, and the campsite we chose was right next to the water. The only reason I’m giving four stars is that the road was super bumpy to get to the campsite itself. However, there are some flat sites to pitch a tent.
Jul 20, 2022 · Sara Kutz-YeagerVery beautiful lake and good camp sites. Only prob was it is very busy up there. Did not get to check out north Ashley but I assume it's the same
Jul 01, 2024 · Brandon FinleyIf you drive your SEDAN down in here it'll get busted real bad! Lucky for me my Mom saw for that I learn to walk at a young age, so I walked down the hill and left my car up on the top of said hill. The campsite was lonely and spooky! Some fellers cross the lake were backing up trucks all night? Lots of beeping. I didn't catch any FISH! I slept great. I connected with the ground of all being and then a mule deer snuffed at me and I put up my dukes but then I said no I will not fight him. I AM him. Why do we destroy our brothers and sisters?
Oct 07, 2024 · Benjamin BrownellRoad to the campground from the main road is thankfully short as it’s really bad. The campsites are hard to tell apart and there is no privacy. Dusty too. Beautiful views of the lake though this is the windy end of the lake. Montana State Parks- you can do better than this!
Jul 29, 2024 · Tamar BaberWas looking for free camping while visiting Kalispell, Got told about this place by a fellow at Cabela’s when purchasing a tent. Let’s be real here, it says 2 spots but there is about 15 camping spots here. It is completely free and if you wish to build a fire pit or use one of the ones that have already been built you totally can.The road is super bumpy with pointy rocks on the way down, so be mindful and careful to avoid an incision in your tires.Overall beautiful view and quiet camping space.
