For local residents in and around Whitefish, Montana, searching for "camping near me," Tally Lake Campground, located at Tally Lake Campground Rd, Whitefish, MT 59937, USA, offers a compelling option for a tranquil and nature-filled getaway. Situated on the shores of Tally Lake, the second largest lake in Montana, this campground provides a picturesque setting and a range of amenities that cater to both short and potentially longer stays. The positive reviews highlight the quiet atmosphere, well-maintained facilities, and the overall beauty of the natural surroundings, making it an attractive destination for those seeking a peaceful camping experience.
The environment of Tally Lake Campground is undoubtedly one of its primary draws. Located directly on Tally Lake, campers can expect stunning lake views and easy access to the water. The lake itself provides opportunities for various water-based activities, although specific details about boat rentals within the campground area would require further online investigation. The surrounding area is characterized by the natural beauty of Montana, likely featuring forests, and potentially offering opportunities for wildlife viewing. One reviewer, who was a camp host, described it as "one of the most beautiful campgrounds" and emphasized the "wonderful nature that surrounds Tally Lake Campground." The quiet atmosphere, mentioned by another visitor, suggests a serene environment ideal for relaxation and escaping the noise of everyday life. The presence of bear-proof trash bins indicates that the campground is located in an area where bears may be present, highlighting the importance of followingLeave No Trace principles and adhering to campground guidelines regarding food storage and waste disposal. The combination of the lake and the surrounding natural landscape creates a potentially diverse ecosystem to explore and enjoy.
Based on the positive feedback from visitors, Tally Lake Campground appears to offer a range of well-maintained services. One reviewer specifically noted the presence of "plenty of restrooms" and "water spickets," indicating that basic hygiene and hydration needs are well catered for. The mention of "reasonably sized" fire pits at each campsite suggests that campers can enjoy campfires responsibly (subject to any local fire restrictions). The availability of "plenty of bear-proof trash bins" is a significant service, ensuring the safety of both campers and wildlife by preventing bears from accessing food waste. A camp host also mentioned that the "grounds and bathrooms and boat rental day use area have always been well cared for," suggesting a commitment to cleanliness and maintenance. The fee process was also clearly explained to one visitor by the "great staff," indicating good customer service. The nightly fee mentioned was $18.00 (at the time of that review), which provides a baseline for understanding the cost, though it's important to note that fees can change, and there might be additional charges depending on the type of site and length of stay. While boat rental day use is mentioned, specific details about the availability, cost, and types of boats would need further online research or direct inquiry with the campground management.
The features of Tally Lake Campground extend beyond its basic amenities. Its prime location on Tally Lake is a significant feature, offering direct access for swimming, fishing, and potentially boating. The fact that Tally Lake is the second largest lake in Montana suggests ample space for water activities and scenic views. The quiet atmosphere, repeatedly praised by visitors, is a valuable feature for those seeking a peaceful camping experience. The presence of experienced management who "know how to train and treat their staff" likely contributes to a well-run and pleasant campground environment. The positive interactions reported with both staff and fellow guests, as highlighted by the camp host's experience, suggest a welcoming and community-oriented atmosphere. The longevity of some guests' visits, with stories of "coming to this Campground for years," indicates a consistent quality and appeal that keeps people returning. The proximity to the natural beauty of Montana offers opportunities for hiking, nature photography, and wildlife observation in the surrounding areas, although specific trails directly within or adjacent to the campground would need to be identified through further research. The combination of lake access, a quiet setting, and positive management and guest experiences makes Tally Lake Campground a potentially exceptional camping destination for local users.
The review from the camp host mentions that they were there for the last six weeks of the season and that there were "only a couple weeks left in the season" at the time of their writing. This implies that Tally Lake Campground might have a seasonal operating schedule, and local users should check the opening and closing dates for the current year before planning a trip. The camp host also extended an invitation to "come on out... we would love to see you before the camp closes and we move on for the winter!" This suggests that the campground might be nearing the end of its operating season at the time of that review. To find out about any current promotional information or special offers, local users should check the official website for Tally Lake Campground (if available), look for listings on popular camping reservation platforms, or contact the Flathead National Forest (as many campgrounds in this area are managed by the US Forest Service). Promotional offers might include discounts for shoulder seasons, extended stays, or special events if the campground hosts any. Given the positive feedback about the staff and management, they would likely be the best source of information regarding current rates and any ongoing promotions for the current camping season, which, as of May 11, 2025, is likely underway.
In conclusion, for local residents around Whitefish, Montana, searching for "camping near me," Tally Lake Campground offers a serene and beautiful camping experience on the shores of the second largest lake in the state. Jun 11, 2018 · Paula KidderI never imagined us camp hosting this year. But when we saw the ad that Tally Lake Campground needed a couple to finish out the last 6 weeks of the season, we simply could not resist. And here we are in one of the most beautiful campgrounds and the second largest lake in Montana. The people who hired us have years of experience and know how to train and treat their staff. They have made our first camp hosting gig a wonderful experience. A day has not gone by that a guest has not thanked us and told us their stories of coming to this Campground for years. They tell us we are doing a great job, but really the grounds and bathrooms and boat rental day use area have always been well cared for. Only a couple weeks left in the season and we will miss the guest, management and all the wonderful nature that surrounds Tally Lake Campground. Come on out... we would love to see you before the camp closes and we move on for the winter!
Aug 28, 2018 · Karl & Sandy GoernerBeautiful lake and good memories. Pretty crowded and you have to pay to park in the parking lot but it's worth it because it's the only spot that's not really steep.
Jul 11, 2021 · FracturedhourglassThis is a popular campground with vault toilets and water. The lake is deep, dark and cold...but refreshing. Nice day picnic area. Water fowl like loons. Watched a beaver swim back and forth gathering sticks for it's den/dam near the creek.Teens kept riding their ATVs right through our campsite, about 10' from our picnic table. That's why the 4 stars.
Oct 18, 2024 · Susan ShermanGreat beach! We weren't camping there but were able to use it for a $5 entry. You can rent paddle boards for $10/hour as well. Dogs aren't allowed but several people brought them anyways. Pretty busy with kids and families but we found a remote section just a few metres off the main Beach.
