Small dispersed site. Not much room for more than 2 tents. Great tree coverage, keeps the camp in shade most of the day. Location is great, right on the edge of Bass lake with a adequate kayak launch. Beautiful morning sunrises and late sunsets. If you like to use a hammock there is at least one great spot on site. No picnic table is a con for me, but there isn’t really any room for one. The fire ring is in ground without a grate. No toilet here that we saw, wasn’t a big deal if you like dispersed camping. This was a great spot for kayak fishing because there is a lot of lake to explore and there is a creek across the lake from the site that connects to a smaller lake (Three Island Lake) where we caught pike and Bass all day everyday. The road leading into the camp is in good shape with a turnaround that will be very tight for anyone with a trailer or RV. 35-40 minutes from Munising - Chris Jellel

For local adventurers seeking a truly off-the-beaten-path "camping near me" experience, Bass Lake dispersed campsite, located near Manistique, Michigan, offers a unique opportunity to immerse oneself in nature. Situated at Ff Rd 2792, Manistique, MI 49854, USA, this small, undeveloped site caters to those who appreciate the solitude and self-sufficiency that dispersed camping provides. Please note that there is no phone number available for this specific campsite, as is typical with many dispersed camping locations.

Based on firsthand accounts from fellow outdoor enthusiasts, Bass Lake dispersed campsite presents a mixed bag of natural beauty and the inherent characteristics of a truly undeveloped location. It's crucial for potential visitors to understand the nature of dispersed camping – it typically involves no provided amenities such as restrooms, picnic tables, or designated fire grates, and requires a greater degree of self-reliance.

The environment at Bass Lake dispersed campsite is consistently described as offering significant natural appeal. The site is small, likely best suited for no more than two tents, which contributes to its secluded feel. Ample tree coverage ensures shade for most of the day, providing a welcome respite, especially during warmer months. The campsite's prime location directly on the edge of Bass Lake is a significant draw, offering immediate access to the water and beautiful views, particularly of morning sunrises and late sunsets. For those who enjoy relaxing in a hammock, at least one ideal spot is available within the site's tree cover.

A notable feature of this campsite is its direct access to Bass Lake, including what is described as an "adequate kayak launch." This makes it an excellent choice for those interested in paddling and exploring the lake. Furthermore, for anglers with kayaks, Bass Lake offers opportunities for fishing. One reviewer highlighted the presence of a creek across the lake from the campsite that connects to a smaller body of water known as Three Island Lake. This connection reportedly offers excellent fishing, with catches of pike and bass being common.

However, it's important to be aware of the limited amenities at this dispersed campsite. As noted by reviewers, there is no picnic table, which might be a drawback for some campers, although the small size of the site might indeed make it difficult to accommodate one. The fire ring is described as being in-ground without a grate, meaning campers will need to be prepared for this type of fire management if they plan to have a campfire. Crucially, there are no toilet facilities at this location, which is a typical characteristic of dispersed camping and requires visitors to adhere to Leave No Trace principles, including proper disposal of human waste.

Accessing the Bass Lake dispersed campsite involves traveling on a road that is reported to be in good shape. However, potential visitors with trailers or RVs should be aware that the turnaround at the end of the road is described as "very tight," suggesting that this site is likely best suited for tent campers or those with smaller vehicles. The campsite is located approximately 35-40 minutes away from Munising, providing a sense of remoteness while still being within a reasonable driving distance for supplies or exploration of the Munising area.

While the natural setting and lake access are significant positives, one reviewer shared a notable concern regarding unexpected visitors. Despite the remote nature of the location – the campsite being the only feature on a long, winding dead-end road – they experienced several instances of people driving to the campsite at various times of day and night, seemingly out of curiosity. This resulted in a lack of the desired seclusion for the campers, who even attempted to deter vehicles by placing downed logs across the road, only to have them moved. This is a crucial consideration for those specifically seeking the solitude that dispersed camping typically offers. While not a reflection on the campsite itself, it highlights a potential lack of awareness or respect from other individuals in the area.

Regarding fishing within Bass Lake itself, one reviewer reported limited success, catching only a single small perch over two days of fishing. However, they did confirm the possibility of kayaking through the channel to Three Island Lake, where the fishing was reportedly much better. It's important to note that the trek to Three Island Lake via this channel was described as "intense," involving very shallow water and overgrown brush that was home to numerous spiders. Therefore, while the potential for better fishing exists, it requires a significant and potentially uncomfortable effort.

For local users seeking a "camping near me" experience that prioritizes natural beauty, direct lake access for kayaking, and the potential for fishing in a nearby lake, Bass Lake dispersed campsite offers these advantages. However, it is essential to be fully prepared for a dispersed camping experience with no provided amenities and to be aware of the potential for unexpected visitors seeking out the dead-end location. The lack of a picnic table and fire grate requires campers to bring their own solutions or adapt to the existing in-ground fire ring. The absence of toilet facilities necessitates a strong commitment to Leave No Trace practices.

In summary, Bass Lake dispersed campsite offers the following features and considerations for local users:

  • Secluded Location: A small site at the end of a dead-end road, offering a sense of remoteness.
  • Lakefront Access: Situated directly on Bass Lake with an adequate kayak launch.
  • Beautiful Scenery: Offering great tree coverage for shade and picturesque sunrises and sunsets over the lake.
  • Kayak Fishing Potential: Direct access to Bass Lake and a connecting creek to the reportedly fish-rich Three Island Lake.
  • Hammock-Friendly: At least one good spot for setting up a hammock.
  • No Picnic Table or Fire Grate: Requires campers to be self-sufficient for these aspects.
  • No Toilet Facilities: Strict adherence to Leave No Trace principles is necessary.
  • Tight Turnaround: May not be suitable for trailers or RVs.
  • Potential for Visitors: Some instances of non-campers driving to the site have been reported.
  • Distance from Munising: Approximately 35-40 minutes away for supplies and other services.

As a dispersed campsite, there is no specific promotional information or booking system. This location is typically first-come, first-served. Local users interested in this type of "camping near me" should be prepared for a primitive experience and embrace the self-reliance that comes with it. If you value solitude and direct access to nature for activities like kayaking and potentially rewarding fishing in nearby Three Island Lake, Bass Lake dispersed campsite might be worth considering, keeping in mind the lack of amenities and the reported issue with unexpected visitors.
