One of the positive highlights of Bear Cave Camping Resort is its suitability for a wide range of campers, including those with large recreational vehicles. It is described as "Class A, and big rig friendly," which is a significant advantage for RV owners who often require spacious sites and easy maneuverability. For local users with larger RVs searching for 'camping near me' that can accommodate their needs, this resort is worth considering.
The natural environment surrounding the campground is another draw. The St Joe River "runs right through the campground," providing multiple public access points for campers to enjoy the river. This offers opportunities for fishing, kayaking, canoeing, or simply relaxing by the water. For local residents who appreciate riverside camping and easy access to water activities, Bear Cave Camping Resort presents an attractive option.
For those seeking on-site entertainment and recreation, the resort boasts a "huge recreation center with an arcade and a few other activities." This suggests that there are ample opportunities for fun and engagement, especially for families with children or those looking for indoor activities during their camping stay. The presence of an arcade adds a classic camping resort element that can be enjoyed by all ages.
Bear Cave Camping Resort is also mentioned as being "Part of the Thousand Trails," a membership-based camping network. For local users who are already members of Thousand Trails or are considering a membership, this affiliation provides added value and potential cost savings for their camping excursions. It's worth noting for those familiar with or interested in this camping network.
In terms of essential amenities, the campground offers "laundry, bathrooms and showers," providing convenience for extended stays and ensuring a more comfortable camping experience. These facilities are important for maintaining hygiene and making longer trips more manageable for campers of all types.
The staff at Bear Cave Camping Resort are described as "super friendly" by one reviewer. Positive interactions with campground staff can significantly enhance the overall camping experience, making guests feel welcome and well-cared for. This friendly service is a notable asset of the resort.
Adding to the unique features of the location is the "Indian conference tree" mentioned by a reviewer as being "interesting." This suggests a point of historical or cultural significance within the campground that might be worth exploring for those interested in local heritage.
However, it's important to consider some of the concerns raised in other reviews. One significant issue reported is a "water leak they're not fixing in DAYS," which has resulted in campers having to boil water. This indicates a potential problem with the campground's infrastructure and could be a major inconvenience and health concern for visitors. Local users should inquire about the status of this issue before booking a stay.
Another reviewer mentioned that some "pads that are lower than the height of the dump station," which could create practical challenges for RV owners when using the dump facilities. This is a specific concern for those with recreational vehicles and should be taken into consideration when choosing a campsite.
Perhaps the most notable feature mentioned in the resort's name, "Bear Cave," is currently "closed due to a cave-in." This is a significant disappointment for visitors who might be drawn to the campground by the prospect of exploring a cave. Local users should be aware that this attraction is currently inaccessible and inquire about any potential reopening timelines if it is a key factor in their decision.
Finally, one reviewer expressed a desire for free Wi-Fi, stating that its absence is "ridiculous." While Wi-Fi availability can vary among campgrounds, the lack of free internet access might be a drawback for some local campers who rely on connectivity for work or leisure.
The mention of a "very cool race track just a half mile or mile toward Buchanon" might be of interest to some local campers who enjoy motorsports. However, it's also worth considering that proximity to a racetrack could potentially result in noise on certain days or weekends.
In conclusion, Bear Cave Camping Resort in Buchanan, MI, offers several appealing features for local campers, including big rig friendly sites, access to the St Joe River, a large recreation center with an arcade, and friendly staff. Its affiliation with Thousand Trails is a bonus for members. However, potential visitors should be aware of reported issues such as a prolonged water leak requiring campers to boil water, potentially inconvenient dump station heights, the current closure of the Bear Cave, and the lack of free Wi-Fi. It is recommended that local users contact the resort directly to inquire about the status of the water issue and the cave, as well as to get more details about amenities and reservation policies before planning their 'camping near me' experience at Bear Cave Camping Resort.

Aug 22, 2024 · American CrowThey have a water leak they're not fixing in DAYSq, so campers shave to boil water. They have pads that are lower than the height of the dump station AND the cave, which literally exists is CLOSED.... other than thatI we think it's a fine place, the staff and people are nice. Yeah, they have some real work to do. And Bear Cave, please start providing wi fi for free, it's ridiculous. A very cool race track just a half mile or mile toward Buchanon
Jul 14, 2024 · Christopher S CrawfordSo much to investigate in the cave and interesting artifacts, photos, etc after you walk through. Wear the hard hat they give you, bumped my head a few times! The resort is well run by nice people.
Jun 11, 2024 · SusanWe loved everything about this Thousand Trails Campground!!! We parked on a level grassy site that accommodated our Class A perfectly with full hookup. We had the typical fire ring and picnic table, but that's all that's typical. The sparkling clean swimming pool was always at the perfect temperature. There was a nicely stocked camp store. The very best part of this campground are the beautiful trails, the fascinating cave with small waterfall, and also the boat landing area that is so very peaceful to listen to wildbirds and watch boats on the St. Jo River. Our grandkids loved the great arcade room w full sized air hockey, Skee-Ball, several driving games, and a pinball machine. All were $.50. The dirt road into the campground was well groomed, plenty wide for RV's both ways and we felt safe with the code activated gate. It works well day or nite. We saw reviews talking about all the seasonal camper. We met several of them who have been there for 15 years or more... they are there because it's such a wonderful place!!! It's first come, first served to find a campsite... if you don't care for your site, you can change once during your stay. We stayed for 18 days and will be back.
Jul 29, 2023 · Rich n SueIt was a little difficult to find a place to camp, but once we did get one it was a wonderful time spent with family. The pool was nice and the river nearby was very lovely. The park rangers there were informative and kind.
