Let's explore the details to see if it's the right fit for your local camping needs.
The Environment: Natural Beauty and Hiking Opportunities Near Hoodsport
Big Creek Campground is situated in the Hoodsport area, known for its proximity to the Olympic Peninsula and the Hood Canal. This suggests an environment rich in natural beauty, likely featuring forests and possibly creek-side settings, given the campground's name. One reviewer mentioned the "Big Creep Loop Trail," noting it's "a steady uphill most of the way, but nothing super crazy." They recommended walking up to the viewpoint, which they described as "really the only view you get on the trail." The trail itself was reported as "nice and clear of blowdown." This indicates that the campground offers direct access to at least one hiking opportunity, allowing campers to explore the local terrain and enjoy the natural surroundings. The presence of downed trees also suggests a forested environment where firewood might be readily available.
The second review highlights the enjoyment of the camp area, even during a last-minute decision to camp. This implies that the location is appealing and worth exploring further. The reviewer also noted the presence of "good tree coverage," which can provide shade and enhance the camping experience. For local users seeking "camping near me" with opportunities for hiking and immersion in a natural setting, Big Creek Campground appears to be a strong contender.
Services and Amenities: Clean Facilities and Well-Maintained Sites
One of the frequently praised aspects of Big Creek Campground is the cleanliness of its facilities. A reviewer explicitly stated, "Clean bathrooms- absolutely! With motion light!" This is a significant plus for many campers and indicates a well-maintained comfort station. The campground also charges a fee of $20, as confirmed by a visitor in May 2022, who posted a picture of the rules with fees and maps. This suggests that there are established operational procedures and that the campground is actively managed.
Regarding the campsites themselves, a camper with a utility trailer found "a few" spots that could accommodate it, indicating some larger or more flexible site options. The spots were described as "clean and well maintained" with "a good amount of space between the campsite’s." Each campsite appears to be equipped with a "fire pit with a grill and a picnic table," which are standard and desirable amenities for most campers. The availability of "downed trees" suggests a natural source of firewood for campfires.
While a host wasn't present upon arrival for one visitor, a friendly ranger did come around in the morning, indicating some level of on-site management and assistance. The absence of running water is not mentioned, so it's plausible that it is available, though campers often bring their own water regardless, as noted by one reviewer who uses a water-filled poison pump for washing and fire safety.

The campground is still closed, but we did big creep loop trail. It's a steady up hill most of the way, but nothing super crazy. I recommend walking up to the viewpoint.. it's really the only view you get on the trail. Trail was nice and clear of blowdown.
Apr 03, 2022 · Mark AloisioWe really enjoyed this camp area! We haven’t got the chance to explore it too much as we decided to camp at the last minute. Here’s what we try to look for when we are exploring somewhere new so hopefully this helps you!Is it open- YES as of May 21, 2022 we can confirm it is☺️Fee’s - YES $20 we posted a picture of their rules with fee and mapsClean bathrooms- absolutely! With motion light!Camp sites- we need a spot to fit our utility trailer and there were a few. The spots are clean and well maintained! There is a good amount is space between the campsite’s. There is a fire pit with a grill and a picnic table. There were downed trees so there is camp fire wood. We use a poison pump filled with just water to put out any fire we make at any campground, and to wash hands or feet 😊Host- there wasn’t one when got there but the ranger did come around 8-9am very friendly!
May 24, 2022 · Wehilani DeMelloThis a great campground, lots of space between you and the next guy, great hiking trails, $20 a night is fantastic! But they have the nastiest bathrooms I have ever seen at a USFS campground...horrible smell and TONS of flies! I found the bathroom by site 42 to be the only tolerable one there.
Sep 02, 2022 · Kimbrie SauvageauReally awesome spot! Less crowded than I would have expected and there were mainly families. Dog friendly, so my pups had a great time. There was some partying and yelling at night but that died off quickly. The hike loop is gorgeous and well-maintained, reason enough for a visit.
Jul 12, 2020 · Zach KissingerOff scenic route 101, go West at Hoodsport 9 miles on 19 to CG, paved all the way. 62 sites, I camped at #17 and it was perfectly level! Spaces are spread out, toilets are immaculate and not smelly! Water spigots throughout the CG, but no hookups or other utilities except dumpsters on main road. Beautiful hiking, 1 mile hike around Big Creek CG or Upper Loop, another 4 mi. $20 camping fee or $10 with ATB Pass.
