Black Walnut Bottom Campground Introduce
For local outdoor enthusiasts seeking a unique "camping near me" experience immersed in nature, Black Walnut Bottom Campground offers a distinctive option with its direct access to the renowned Pine Creek Rail Trail. Located in Cammal, PA 17723, USA, this campground presents a rustic and potentially secluded camping opportunity for those looking to combine their outdoor adventures with the convenience of a well-maintained trail system.
The environment surrounding Black Walnut Bottom Campground is characterized by its proximity to the Pine Creek Rail Trail, a significant feature for cyclists and hikers. The trail itself winds through scenic landscapes, offering picturesque views and opportunities for exploration. Being situated right along the bike trail provides campers with immediate access for recreational activities, making it an appealing choice for those who prioritize biking or walking as part of their camping experience. The mention of it being a "great spot to camp" and "quiet" by one reviewer suggests that the natural setting offers a peaceful and enjoyable atmosphere, likely surrounded by the woodlands and natural beauty that define the Pine Creek Gorge area.
However, it is crucial to consider the accessibility of the campsites within Black Walnut Bottom Campground. One reviewer noted that having to "walk a mile to the camp sites is exhausting." This suggests that the camping areas may not be directly accessible by vehicle and require a significant trek, potentially with gear. This is a critical piece of information for prospective campers, as it could impact the type of camping they can undertake and the amount of equipment they can comfortably bring. Individuals with mobility issues or those preferring car-side camping should take this distance into careful consideration.
Regarding services and features, the limited information available online makes it challenging to provide a comprehensive overview. The positive review mentions it as a "great spot to camp," implying the presence of basic camping infrastructure. However, details regarding specific amenities such as restroom facilities, water sources, fire rings, or picnic tables are not provided in the given reviews. The absence of mention of staff or an office suggests that this might be a more primitive or self-service camping area. Local users accustomed to campgrounds with full amenities should be prepared for a potentially more rustic experience at Black Walnut Bottom Campground.
One significant issue raised by a reviewer concerns the lack of on-site authority and the potential for disrespectful behavior from other campers. The experience of arriving at a reserved site to find it occupied by others who refused to leave for several hours, coupled with the subsequent mess and damage to vegetation left behind, paints a concerning picture. The reviewer's statement that "with no authority there to remove them, they didn’t care about others" highlights a potential lack of management presence or enforcement of campground rules. This is a serious consideration for local users who value a safe and respectful camping environment.
The feature of being directly on the Pine Creek Rail Trail is undoubtedly a major draw for those interested in cycling or hiking. The convenience of stepping off the trail and directly into a campsite is a unique advantage. For local users who frequently utilize the Pine Creek Rail Trail for recreation, Black Walnut Bottom Campground offers the opportunity for multi-day adventures with overnight stays along the way. The quiet environment mentioned by one reviewer further enhances the appeal for those seeking a peaceful escape in nature.
However, the negative experience shared by another reviewer regarding the long walk to campsites, the issue with occupied reserved sites, and the lack of apparent management to address such problems cannot be ignored. This feedback suggests potential shortcomings in the organization and oversight of the campground. Local users should weigh the benefit of the trailside location against the potential for logistical challenges and issues with fellow campers.
Promotional information is absent from the provided reviews. Therefore, local users interested in Black Walnut Bottom Campground would need to seek additional information from other online sources or potentially local hiking and biking communities to ascertain if there are any specific promotions, fees, or reservation procedures in place. Given the limited information and the negative experience reported, it would be prudent for potential campers to gather more details before making a decision.
In conclusion, Black Walnut Bottom Campground offers a unique environment for "camping near me" due to its direct access to the popular Pine Creek Rail Trail. This feature is a significant advantage for cyclists and hikers looking for a convenient overnight stop. The quiet setting, as mentioned by one reviewer, can also be appealing to those seeking a peaceful natural retreat. However, the reported long walk to campsites and the serious issues encountered with other campers occupying reserved sites and leaving a mess, coupled with a perceived lack of on-site authority, are significant drawbacks that potential visitors must consider. Local users should carefully weigh these factors and seek additional information to determine if Black Walnut Bottom Campground aligns with their camping preferences and expectations. The contrasting experiences shared in the reviews highlight the importance of being prepared for potentially challenging conditions and a possibly unmanaged environment.

Black Walnut Bottom Campground Reviews
Great spot to camp, quiet and right along the bike trail. We go every year and bring the kids.
Sep 10, 2022 · Ben HavensNice area, but having to walk a mile to the camp sites is exhausting. When I got to my site, there were people in the spot I reserved, that didn’t leave until 7pm. 4 hours after they were supposed to be gone. They left the site a mess and destroyed a bunch of the vegetation around the site. With no authority there to remove them, they didn’t care about others.Honestly, there are a lot better camp sites around. Go to those, not this one.
Sep 10, 2023 · SpringerstineVery nice park to camp in, rangers come by and check on you at least once a day, it was rather quiet when we were there, we did see one baby bear cub. It was a very enjoyable experience. Just make sure you have enough stuff because the stores that are around there are extremely expensive.
