For local residents of Pennsylvania searching for "camping near me" who desire a tranquil and nature-immersive experience within the stunning Pine Creek Gorge, Tomb Flats Campground near Cammal, PA, offers a promising option. Located on Yoder Ln, this campground is described by visitors as peaceful and excellent for camping, providing a sense of being fully lost in the wilderness while maintaining convenient access to your vehicle. If you're exploring "camping near me" and are drawn to riverfront camping with opportunities for swimming and floating, and are comfortable with basic amenities, Tomb Flats Campground could be an ideal destination.
Embrace the Wilderness Environment Along Pine Creek
Tomb Flats Campground is situated in a "beautiful area" directly adjacent to Pine Creek, within the heart of the Pine Creek Gorge, often referred to as the "Grand Canyon of Pennsylvania." This location offers campers immediate access to the natural beauty of the gorge, characterized by steep forested hillsides, the winding Pine Creek, and abundant wildlife. The environment is described as peaceful and conducive to a sense of wilderness, allowing campers to feel secluded and immersed in nature. The proximity to Pine Creek provides opportunities for various water-related activities, as highlighted by a reviewer who suggests trying an inner tube float down the river (with safety precautions). The river also serves as a natural alternative for swimming and cooling off, as the campground itself does not offer showers.
The fact that campers can feel "fully lost in the wilderness while being only a short walk from our car" suggests a convenient balance between accessibility and immersion. This is particularly appealing for those who want a wilderness experience without the challenges of extensive backpacking. The surrounding area of Pine Creek Gorge is also renowned for its hiking trails, offering further opportunities for exploration and enjoying the scenic vistas of the region. The Pine Creek Rail Trail, a popular multi-use trail, is likely also easily accessible from the campground, providing miles of flat terrain for biking and walking along the creek.
Basic Services and Amenities: Pit Latrines and River Access
The amenities at Tomb Flats Campground are described as basic, aligning with a more rustic and primitive camping experience. According to a reviewer, the campground offers "pit latrines without sinks or showers." This means that campers should come prepared for limited facilities and plan accordingly for personal hygiene. The reviewer notes that "a dip in the Pine Creek is an excellent alternative" for washing, highlighting the natural resource as a key amenity. However, campers should always exercise caution and be aware of water conditions and safety guidelines when using natural water sources for washing or recreation.
Another practical piece of advice from a reviewer is to "take your own TP because the bathrooms are well used and run out of TP." This suggests that while basic restroom facilities are provided, campers should be self-sufficient in terms of supplies like toilet paper and hand sanitizer, as these may not be consistently available. The well-used nature of the bathrooms indicates that the campground is a popular spot, particularly during peak seasons.
There is no mention of other typical campground amenities such as potable water sources, picnic tables, or fire rings at each individual campsite. Campers should be prepared to bring their own water or a water filtration system if they plan to use natural sources, and they may need to bring portable tables and cooking equipment. The presence of fire rings might be assumed for a campground setting, but it's advisable to confirm regulations regarding campfires with local authorities or signage at the campground.

Tomb Flats Campground Reviews
Peaceful, call and excellent camping. We felt fully lost in the wilderness while being only a short walk from our car. Has pit latrines without sinks or showers but a dip in the Pine Creek is an excellent alternative. Try an inner tube float down the river and be safe.

Sep 03, 2024 · MATT YINGLINGWell kept campground with bathrooms on site. Walking distance to Pine Creek and the Rails to Trails bike bath is easily accessible. There is also a boat launch for watercraft and ample parking.
May 01, 2022 · Tim AumanI stayed here in late August. A few of the sites don't have a lot of shade, but every site does have at least some. You can't drive up to your specific spot, but the parking lot is large and there are paths to every site. Sites are free, there is a men's /women's toilet, campfire and lantern pole at each site. I was surprised there weren't more people staying honestly. During the day on the weekend the creek is more crowded. The creek is relatively low, has flat rocks, great for kids of all ages! Easy to stay socially distanced as well! My biggest concern were the flies that bit. Others in my party weren't nearly as affected. Long pants and long sleeves work well against them.
Aug 25, 2020 · Jennifer KellerWhat a fantastic primitive campground! I stayed there with 15 others and had plenty of space (think it was lots 6 and 9 that we had). At night we even saw the Milky Way! There are only 2 toilets and no running water, electricity and no phone service. So prepared to rough it. Bring a saw. There is plenty of firewood nearby. All you have to do is carry logs back to the campground and cut them into pieces that fit into the fire ring. Bring plenty of water and buckets to wash yourself. You are not allowed to wash yourself in the stream. The closest WIFI is at the nearby general store. You can even get the WIFI while parked outside the store (the password is on a sign next to the door).
