Blanding Landing Recreation Area Introduce
For local residents seeking "camping near me" along the river in Hanover, Illinois, the Blanding Landing Recreation Area, located at 5720 S River Rd, Hanover, IL 61041, USA, offers a seemingly isolated setting with scenic views. However, recent customer reviews highlight a significant environmental factor – the frequent and loud passage of freight trains – that potential visitors should be aware of. While the campground boasts exceptionally clean toilet facilities, the noise from the trains and some concerns about host interactions appear to be important considerations for those planning a local camping trip here.
The platform category "camping near me" aims to provide local users with information about nearby campgrounds and recreational areas. Blanding Landing Recreation Area fits this category due to its location in Hanover, Illinois. The reviews suggest a riverside setting, which is often a desirable feature for campers. However, the strong emphasis on the noise from the adjacent train line indicates that the "isolated" nature mentioned in one review comes with a significant auditory trade-off. Local users prioritizing peace and quiet in their camping experience will need to carefully weigh this factor.
The environment of Blanding Landing Recreation Area is described as having a "great" view, likely due to its riverside location. However, one reviewer noted that the area by the river could be fantastic for camping if it were cleaned up, suggesting potential for improvement in the immediate surroundings of the waterfront. The presence of a bridge that is frequently occupied limits the sitting area directly by the water, which is unfortunate given the river's beauty. For tent campers, one review advises being mindful of ground moisture when choosing a site. The most significant environmental factor highlighted is the constant noise from "huge freight train roaring through every fifteen minutes." While one reviewer notes that you do get used to it, another describes the noise as "horrifying" and loud enough to wake them up at night, even feeling like they were camping on the train tracks. This pervasive noise is a dominant aspect of the environment that local users must consider.
In terms of services, the reviews provide limited information beyond the toilet facilities. One reviewer emphatically states that the "toilet facilities have to be seen to believe" and are "immaculate by any standards," far exceeding expectations for such an isolated location. This is a significant positive aspect of the campground's services. However, there is no mention of other common campground amenities such as water hookups, electrical hookups, dump stations, fire pits, picnic tables, or trash disposal. The interaction with the host, as described by one reviewer, raises some concerns. The reviewer felt unnecessarily bothered by the host's repeated checks on their kiosk ticket, even after following the posted instructions. This suggests a potential lack of trust or an overly intrusive management style that some campers seeking solitude might find off-putting. The availability of phone numbers, (815) 591-2326 and +1 815-591-2326, indicates that direct contact for inquiries is possible, which would be advisable for local users seeking more information about available services.
The features of Blanding Landing Recreation Area include its riverside location and the reportedly excellent cleanliness of its toilet facilities. The potential for great views, if the river area were better maintained, could also be considered a feature. However, the overwhelming negative feature highlighted in the reviews is the extreme noise from the frequent passing of freight trains. This noise appears to significantly detract from the peacefulness that many campers seek. The host's behavior, as described in one review, could also be considered a feature of the management style, though it was perceived negatively by that particular camper. The isolation of the location might be seen as a feature by some seeking solitude, but this is directly countered by the constant train noise. The lack of mention of other typical campground features makes it difficult to assess the overall offerings.
Currently, there is no specific promotional information available for Blanding Landing Recreation Area based on the provided text. Local users interested in learning about camping fees, site availability, or any potential discounts would need to contact the recreation area directly using the provided phone numbers. It would be particularly important to inquire about the proximity of the campsites to the train tracks and to get a clearer understanding of the noise levels at different times of the day and night. Given the mixed reviews, especially the strong negative feedback regarding the train noise, any promotional material would ideally address this issue transparently. Local users might also find it helpful to consult online mapping services to visualize the proximity of the campground to the railway line before making a decision.
In conclusion, Blanding Landing Recreation Area in Hanover, IL, offers a riverside camping experience within the "camping near me" category, but it comes with a significant caveat: extremely loud and frequent train noise. While the campground boasts remarkably clean toilet facilities and potentially great views (if the river area is improved), the disruptive train traffic appears to be a major drawback for many visitors. Additionally, one reviewer reported a negative interaction with the host. Local users considering this campground should be fully aware of the train noise issue and weigh it against the positive aspects, such as the clean restrooms and riverside location. Contacting the recreation area directly for more information about site details, fees, and the proximity to the train tracks is strongly recommended before making a reservation.

Blanding Landing Recreation Area Reviews
This is a great isolated place to camp, if you don't mind a huge freight train roaring through every fifteen minutes. You do get used to it.If you are tent camping make sure that you pitch your tent where the ground moisture is not gonna soak through. The toilet facilities have to be seen to believe. They are immaculate by any standards. And certainly a lot cleaner than you would expect in such an isolated place.
Jan 05, 2025 · Nicholas KrihoI usually don't leave any reviews but this time I feel obligated to do so to warn others...Location: I understand there is nothing much that can be done about the train passing by literally right by the campground but please be aware this train is soo loud! At night, it woke me up few times and if I didn't see it earlier that day, I would have thought I am camping on the train tracks and the train will run me over any second, soooo loud!View: The view is great! However, if the area by the river was cleaned up, there could be fantastic camping spots! The bridge is always occupied so not much of the sitting area right by the water which is unfortunate considering the river is so beautiful!Host: I assume other people (like me) come to campgrounds to stay away from people, the city and just chill in peace. Well, although the campground had signs to collect the ticket and pay at the kiosk (as I did!). The host approached me to make sure I knew to use the kiosk. I kept my ticket at the dashboard right by the tent AS REQUIRED BY THE KIOSK but the lady asked to show it to her and attach to the site pole. I chose the site away from everybody so I am not bothered but in the evening she came again! She drove in to the site (off road!), stopped right by my tent and my campfire where I was trying to enjoy the silence between the train passings, and she wrote down something and drove away. Why would you create the automatic system for campers if you have to bother them so much!?Overall, the place has a potential to be better. One thing I can say is that the restrooms are super clean but I would never choose this place again! When others said there is a train passing by I thought it's not a big deal but dear God! This is horrifying! So
Sep 03, 2024 · Sylwia VWeve camped here numerous times and Love it! The bathrooms and showers are very clean. The camp hosts have always been nice. The view of the backwaters of the mississippi river is beautiful! The train goes by alot but after the 1st few times you dont really notice it.
Jun 05, 2022 · CASSIE TESSMANI've been there many times. It's beautiful there, and very remote. As others have stated, the trains are frequent and do blow their horn at the grade crossing. My kids enjoy the trains, and I can usually fall back asleep when one comes through. The overall area is beautiful, and we enjoy day trips to Galena and Savanna, IL. Sites are grass but relatively level.
Jun 09, 2017 · Michael GriffithsBeautiful campground, very helpful Campground Host who checked us in. Camping sites were beautiful grass with electric service only. Nicely spread out. You can borrow horseshoes to play a game from the office. Check-in was between 5-8 pm, but the Host was just across the parking lot at the entry to the campground. We didn't realize the train tracks were as busy as they were, and I'm sure there were more than 10 trains during the night. Each one blew the whistle at the crossing for our campground. 4 blasts - 2 long, 1 short, 1 long. At least until midnight, then starting up around 4:30 am. Even with air conditioner on and making noise, it still woke us up in our pop-up camper. Every time. Be prepared.
