Bodine Field Campground Introduce
For local users in US seeking a "camping near me" experience that emphasizes natural beauty and group camping opportunities during their travels to the Hammonton, New Jersey area, Bodine Field Campground offers a unique and serene escape within the New Jersey Pine Barrens. Located at 31 Atsion Batsto Rd, Hammonton, NJ 08037, USA, this campground appears to be a more primitive and nature-focused destination, particularly appealing to larger groups and those who appreciate a less developed camping environment.
Bodine Field Campground fits into the "camping near me" category for those who prioritize natural surroundings and recreational activities like swimming and water sports in a pristine setting. The customer reviews highlight its spaciousness for group camping and its proximity to the beautiful cedar water creek, which offers swimming holes, rope swings, and access for canoes and kayaks. This suggests a campground that is less about structured amenities and more about immersing oneself in the natural beauty of the NJ Pine Barrens.
Environment and Scenery:
The environment surrounding Bodine Field Campground is clearly a major draw. Situated within the Pinelands National Reserve, it offers access to the unique and picturesque landscapes of this region. Key environmental features include:
- Large Open Space: The campground is described as a "big open space," making it particularly suitable for group camping and providing ample room for various activities.
- Wading River Proximity: The Wading River runs by the campground, offering scenic views and likely opportunities for fishing or simply enjoying the water's edge.
- Cedar Water Creek: A significant natural attraction is the beautiful cedar water creek. This type of creek is characteristic of the Pine Barrens, known for its clear, tea-colored water stained by tannins from cedar and pine vegetation.
- Swimming Holes: The creek features swimming holes, providing natural and refreshing places to swim.
- Rope Swings: The presence of rope swings adds an element of fun and adventure to the swimming experience in the creek.
- Canoe/Kayak Landings: The creek also offers landings suitable for canoes and kayaks, indicating opportunities for paddling and exploring the waterways of the Pine Barrens.
- Serene Beauty: Reviewers describe the area as having "pure, natural, serene beauty," emphasizing the peaceful and unspoiled nature of the location.
The overall environment is characterized by the natural and relatively undeveloped state of the Pine Barrens, offering a contrast to more amenity-rich campgrounds.
Services and Facilities:
Based on the limited information from the reviews, Bodine Field Campground appears to offer more basic services and facilities, focusing on the natural environment rather than extensive amenities:
- Open Camping Area: The "big open space" suggests a more communal camping arrangement suitable for groups, rather than individual, defined campsites with specific hookups.
- Fire Pits (Implied): The mention of having a fire to cook dinner suggests the presence of fire pits or designated areas for campfires.
- Access to Natural Water Sources: The proximity to Wading River and the cedar water creek provides access to water for recreational purposes (swimming, paddling) but likely not for drinking without proper treatment.
The absence of mentions of restrooms, showers, electric hookups, or other developed amenities suggests that Bodine Field Campground caters to a more self-sufficient camping style. Campers should be prepared with their own supplies and equipment for a more primitive camping experience.
Features and Activities:
The primary features and activities at Bodine Field Campground are centered around enjoying the natural environment:
- Group Camping: The large open space is ideal for accommodating larger groups of campers.
- Swimming: The cedar water creek offers natural swimming holes for a refreshing experience.
- Rope Swinging: A fun and adventurous activity available at the swimming holes.
- Canoeing and Kayaking: The creek provides opportunities for paddling and exploring the waterways of the Pine Barrens.
- Fishing (Likely): Given the proximity to Wading River and the creek, fishing might be a possibility, although not explicitly mentioned. A New Jersey fishing license would be required.
- Nature Appreciation: The "pure, natural, serene beauty" of the area encourages relaxation and appreciation of the Pine Barrens ecosystem.
- Campfires and Cooking: The ability to have a fire suggests opportunities for outdoor cooking and the traditional camping experience of gathering around a fire.
Promotional Information and Local Context:
For local users in US seeking a "camping near me" experience that truly immerses them in the natural beauty of the New Jersey Pine Barrens, Bodine Field Campground offers a unique appeal, particularly for group travelers. The emphasis on the open space and the natural recreational opportunities of the creek and river provide a different kind of camping experience compared to more amenity-rich resorts.
Hammonton, NJ, is located in the southern part of the state and is known as the "Blueberry Capital of the World." The surrounding Pinelands are a vast expanse of forests, wetlands, and waterways, offering a wide range of outdoor activities. While Bodine Field Campground itself focuses on a more natural experience, its location provides access to the broader attractions of the Pinelands National Reserve, which include:
- Atsion Recreation Area: Located nearby, Atsion offers swimming in a lake, canoeing, hiking trails, and a historic iron furnace.
- Batsto Village: A preserved historic bog iron and glassmaking town within Wharton State Forest, offering a glimpse into the region's past.
- Wharton State Forest: The largest state forest in New Jersey, with numerous hiking trails, canoeing rivers (like the Mullica), and historic sites.
- Pinelands Adventures: Offers guided canoe and kayak trips on the scenic rivers of the Pine Barrens.
- Local Farms and Markets: The region is known for its cranberry and blueberry farms, with opportunities for seasonal visits and purchasing fresh produce.
The "promotional" aspect of Bodine Field Campground, based on the reviews, is its natural beauty and the unique recreational opportunities it offers, especially for groups. The chance to camp in a large open space by the Wading River and have direct access to a cedar water creek with swimming holes and rope swings is a significant draw for those seeking a more adventurous and nature-based "camping near me" experience. The serene environment and the opportunity to explore the waterways via canoe or kayak further enhance its appeal for outdoor enthusiasts.

Apr 24, 2023 · philip martynPure, natural, serene beauty at it's best out here. Beautiful cedar water creek with swimming holes, rope swings and landings for canoes/kayaks. The best way to experience the NJ pine barrens 👍
Jun 24, 2020 · Kevin KBodine Field campground was the perfect camping stop before heading down to Cape May for vacation. Make sure you reserve a site on the park's website beforehand. This particular campground had a bit of a bumpy dirt road drive to get to it, so be conscious of your vehicles' abilities. The pit toilet was fairly clean and I liked the distance between campsites. There was a bit of trash in the firepit when I arrived and the fire pit looked like it was run over. But! I simply took the trash with me when I left and notified the park staff about the firepit and they informed maintenance would take care of it. Camp neighbors took a bit to quiet down, but I had some very restful sleep and enjoyed the NJ pine barrens. Would have loved to go for a swim in the river if I had the time. Check this place out!
Aug 01, 2022 · Ronnie HeldGreat spot. Very peaceful and calm. Spaces are a nice size to allow you to spread out at little. Pit toilets. Some of them could use a little attention. Pump water
Oct 07, 2024 · Zach FortierThis is a great place for a brief getaway. I took my 11 year old daughter just so we could "unplug" for 24 hours. It was time well spent! We only live about a half hour away from Wharton State Forest and we hope to be back several times this year!
