I wish I had listened to the other reviews. Truck bottomed out getting up there. No cell service so we had to have one of our compadres hike down miles to get service, he nearly got bitten by a rattlesnake on the way. I love rugged camping but there are about a thousand other campgrounds I would choose before this one. - Aaron North

Briggs Creek Campground Introduce

For local residents exploring "camping near me" options in Oregon, Briggs Creek Campground, located on Illinois River Rd, Selma, OR 97538, USA, presents itself as a very remote and rugged camping destination based on recent visitor feedback. You can reach them at (541) 471-6500 or their mobile number, +1 541-471-6500. However, it is crucial for potential visitors to carefully consider the experiences shared by others before deciding to camp at this location.

Multiple reviews paint a picture of a challenging and potentially hazardous environment. One camper explicitly stated, "I wish I had listened to the other reviews," immediately setting a cautionary tone. A significant issue highlighted is the extremely difficult road access. This reviewer reported their truck "bottomed out getting up there," indicating that the road conditions are likely very rough and may not be suitable for all types of vehicles, especially those with low clearance. This could lead to damage to vehicles and significant difficulty in reaching the campground.

Another major concern raised is the lack of cell phone service. This forced one group to have a member hike "down miles to get service" in an emergency. This not only highlights the isolation of the campground but also the potential safety risks associated with the inability to communicate in case of an emergency. The reviewer also recounted a near encounter with a rattlesnake during this trek for cell service, underscoring the presence of potentially dangerous wildlife in the area.

While one reviewer mentioned loving "rugged camping," they emphatically stated that there are "about a thousand other campgrounds I would choose before this one," indicating that the challenges associated with Briggs Creek Campground outweigh the appeal of its ruggedness, at least in their experience.

Further details from another visitor corroborate these concerns and add more alarming aspects. They described the road as "horrible," more akin to an "extreme ATV offroad," suggesting that it poses a high risk of damage to vehicles and loss of gear during the journey to the campsite. This reinforces the warning about unsuitable road conditions for standard vehicles.

The presence of rattlesnakes is another significant issue repeatedly emphasized. This reviewer stated they had "never seen so many rattlesnakes in my life" while hiking, within the campsite itself, and throughout the area. They specifically mentioned seeing "10 more huge green looking rattlesnakes" on their way out. This abundance of venomous snakes poses a considerable safety risk to campers, especially those with children or pets, and requires extreme caution and preparedness.

The reviews also describe the environmental impact of a past forest fire. The area is characterized by "thousands of standing dead burnt trees everywhere," although some new growth is emerging. This post-fire landscape might be visually stark and could also present potential hazards such as falling trees or unstable ground. The reviewer also noted extremely high temperatures (109 degrees during their visit), indicating that the area can experience very hot weather, requiring campers to be well-prepared for extreme heat.

Perhaps the most concerning aspect highlighted in the reviews is the interaction with wildlife, specifically bears. One group experienced a bear entering their camp, unlatching their trailer door, tearing up belongings, and dragging items into the brush. They also reported seeing three bears on the road while leaving. This indicates a significant bear presence and potential for negative human-wildlife interactions, emphasizing the need for proper food storage and caution.

The concluding sentiment of one reviewer was stark: "Not a safe place to go unless you like that type of life and come prepared." This strongly suggests that Briggs Creek Campground is not suitable for casual campers or those unprepared for very challenging conditions, including difficult access, lack of communication, abundant dangerous wildlife, and a potentially hazardous environment due to the aftermath of a forest fire.

Given the overwhelmingly negative feedback regarding road conditions, safety concerns related to rattlesnakes and bears, lack of cell service, and the impact of a past forest fire, it is difficult to identify any positive features or potential promotional aspects of Briggs Creek Campground based solely on these reviews. The consistent warnings about the dangers and difficulties associated with this location should be taken very seriously by anyone considering camping there.

For local users searching for "camping near me," Briggs Creek Campground appears to be a location that should be approached with extreme caution and only by those who are highly experienced in rugged, remote camping and are fully prepared for significant challenges and potential hazards. The risks associated with road access, wildlife encounters, and the environment seem to outweigh any potential benefits for the vast majority of campers.

In conclusion, the available information strongly advises against camping at Briggs Creek Campground unless you are an experienced and extremely well-prepared individual who is comfortable with very difficult road conditions, a high risk of encountering rattlesnakes and bears, no cell phone service, and a landscape recovering from a significant forest fire. For most local users seeking a camping experience, there are likely safer and more accessible options available in the region. It is highly recommended to thoroughly research current conditions and heed the warnings from previous visitors before considering a trip to Briggs Creek Campground.
