Endorsed by generations of families, this camp, maintained and operated by the LDS Church, provides a range of accommodation options, recreational activities, and stunning scenery at incredibly low prices, making it an ideal choice for individuals, families, and especially large groups like family reunions.
A Corner of Paradise: The Environment and Setting:
Lyman Lake Recreation Camp is described by a reviewer as a "corner of paradise," immediately painting a picture of a beautiful and serene natural setting. The camp's namesake, Lyman Lake, is highlighted as a central feature, noted for its crystal-clear water and the breathtaking views it offers. The surrounding environment is likely characterized by the mountainous terrain typical of the region near Evanston, Wyoming, suggesting opportunities for enjoying fresh mountain air and scenic landscapes. The presence of a forest road in the address further implies a location nestled within a natural woodland environment, providing shade and a sense of immersion in nature.
The lake itself, while noted for its cold water even in early summer, is a hub for various activities. Its clarity enhances the experience of canoeing and fishing, allowing participants to appreciate the underwater environment. The absence of leeches in the swimming area (with the caveat of avoiding walking on the lake bottom) makes swimming a viable and enjoyable activity for visitors of all ages.
The mention of a lack of lights in the bunkhouses suggests a setting where the natural environment takes precedence, particularly at night, likely offering exceptional opportunities for stargazing and enjoying the tranquility of the wilderness after dark.
Diverse Accommodation Options: Cabins and Bunkhouses:
Lyman Lake Recreation Camp offers two primary types of accommodation: cabins and bunkhouses. The main cabin is equipped with electricity and plumbing, providing a more comfortable and convenient option for those who prefer these amenities. This makes it particularly suitable for families or individuals who appreciate having access to lights and indoor sanitation.
The bunkhouses, on the other hand, offer a more rustic experience. It's important to note that they do not have lights or electricity, requiring campers to bring their own lighting sources. Additionally, sleeping arrangements in the bunkhouses consist of flat shelves, so visitors will need to bring their own sleeping mats or pads for comfort. The fact that it can get "pretty cold at night even in the summer" indicates the need for warm bedding, even during the warmer months.
This range of accommodation options allows Lyman Lake Recreation Camp to cater to different preferences and needs, from those seeking basic shelter in the bunkhouses to those desiring more amenities in the main cabin. The availability of bunkhouses makes it particularly well-suited for larger groups and youth camps, as highlighted by one long-time visitor whose family has been coming for youth camps for over 30 years.
Recreational Activities for Everyone:
Lyman Lake Recreation Camp is a haven for outdoor activities. The lake is central to many of these, offering opportunities for:
- Canoeing: With well-maintained equipment, canoeing on the crystal-clear waters of Lyman Lake is a major draw.
- Swimming: Despite the cold water, swimming is a popular activity, with the advice to avoid walking on the lake bottom due to potential leeches.
- Fishing: The lake is noted for great fishing, providing opportunities to catch various types of fish.
Beyond the lake, the surrounding environment likely offers opportunities for hiking and exploring the natural beauty of the area, although specific trails are not detailed in the reviews. The overall impression is of a location that encourages outdoor engagement and active enjoyment of the natural surroundings.
Incredibly Low Prices and Value:
A significant highlight of Lyman Lake Recreation Camp is its affordability. One reviewer explicitly mentioned that "the price per night for the cabin, bunkhouses, canoes, and all amenities are incredibly low." This exceptional value makes it an attractive option for budget-conscious travelers, families, and large groups looking for an affordable "camping near me" experience without sacrificing access to beautiful scenery and recreational activities.
The fact that the LDS Church maintains and operates the camp likely contributes to its affordability, as it may be run as a service rather than solely for profit. This commitment to providing an accessible and enjoyable experience for visitors is evident in the positive feedback regarding the value offered.
Helpful On-Site Service Missionaries:
Adding to the positive experience is the presence of "on-site service missionaries" who are described as "very helpful." This suggests that visitors can expect a level of support and assistance during their stay, contributing to a welcoming and well-managed environment. The presence of helpful staff can be particularly beneficial for first-time visitors or large groups needing guidance.
Rules and Standards of Conduct:
It's noted that there are "rules and standards of conduct for the camp which are not hard to follow." This indicates that while the atmosphere is welcoming and enjoyable, there are guidelines in place to ensure a respectful and safe environment for all visitors. These rules likely contribute to the camp's well-maintained condition and the positive experiences reported by long-term users.
Perfect for Family Reunions and Group Events:
The combination of affordable accommodation options (cabins and bunkhouses), diverse recreational activities, and the supportive presence of service missionaries makes Lyman Lake Recreation Camp a "perfect designation for family reunions" and other large group events. The capacity to house many people at a low cost, coupled with the opportunities for shared activities like canoeing, swimming, and potentially group meals or gatherings in common areas (though not explicitly mentioned), creates an ideal setting for creating lasting memories with loved ones.

My family has been coming here for youth camps (whether attending or as a helper) for over 30 years. It's an amazing place.

There are flat shelves in the bunkhouses for sleeping so you will need a mat or pad.The lake is beautiful but the water is quite cold even in early summer. We all went swimming and had no issues with the leeches (just don't walk on the lake bottom). The canoeing is a ton of fun and all the equipment is well maintained. The water is crystal clear and the fishing is great. There are rules and standards of conduct for the camp which are not hard to follow. All in all, this is a prime destination and the LDS church does a fantastic job running it. Thank you for having us!!!!
