Based on recent feedback, this campground is described as both relaxing and beautiful, with the added benefit of being a "best free place" according to one reviewer. You can reach them at (541) 592-4000 or +1 541-592-4000 for any inquiries, although as a free campground, reservations may not be applicable or necessary.
The environment surrounding Josephine Camp Campground is clearly a major draw. Situated near a river, it offers direct and easy "river access," which is highlighted as "very cool" and "very clean" by one visitor. This proximity to the water opens up a range of recreational activities. According to one enthusiastic camper, the river is suitable for fishing, swimming (when the temperature allows), and even catching crawdads and frogs. This makes Josephine Camp Campground an ideal destination for families and individuals who enjoy water-based activities as part of their camping experience. The presence of a river also typically contributes to a serene and picturesque setting, with the sounds of flowing water often enhancing the sense of relaxation.
Beyond the river, the campground also offers opportunities for hiking. While the specifics of the trails are not detailed in the provided reviews, the mention of hiking suggests that the surrounding area features natural landscapes worth exploring on foot. This could include riverside trails, paths through wooded areas, or routes leading to scenic viewpoints. For local users of the 'camping near me' platform interested in combining camping with hiking, Josephine Camp Campground appears to offer this possibility.
One of the most significant features mentioned is that Josephine Camp Campground is considered a "best free place" to camp. This is a considerable advantage for budget-conscious campers and those who appreciate a more rustic and less regulated camping experience. Free campgrounds often provide a more direct connection with nature, although they may also come with fewer amenities compared to paid campgrounds.
However, the reviews also highlight an important issue that potential visitors should be aware of. One camper expressed disappointment due to the presence of broken glass "everywhere" and wished that people would clean up after themselves. This suggests that while the natural environment is beautiful, littering and a lack of cleanliness by some visitors can detract from the overall experience and potentially pose safety hazards. For local users considering this free campground, it's important to be mindful of Leave No Trace principles and to perhaps even contribute to keeping the area clean during their visit.
Considering the 'camping near me' category, Josephine Camp Campground offers several key features for local users:
Free Camping: The most significant draw for many will be the absence of camping fees, making it an incredibly budget-friendly option.
River Access: The clean and easily accessible river provides opportunities for swimming, fishing, and catching crawdads and frogs, catering to a variety of interests.
Hiking Opportunities: The surrounding area offers trails for those who enjoy exploring nature on foot.
Relaxing and Beautiful Environment: The natural setting is described as conducive to relaxation and enjoyment of the outdoors.
However, potential drawbacks to consider include:
Litter Concerns: The presence of broken glass indicates that some visitors may not be adhering to Leave No Trace principles, potentially affecting the cleanliness and safety of the campground.
Potentially Limited Amenities: As a free campground, it is likely that the amenities available will be basic or minimal. Campers should be prepared to be self-sufficient in terms of water, waste disposal, and other necessities.
Lack of Reservations: Free campgrounds often operate on a first-come, first-served basis, which means there is no guarantee of securing a campsite, especially during peak seasons or weekends.
Given that Josephine Camp Campground is reportedly free, there is likely no formal promotional information or discounts available. The primary appeal is the cost-free access to a beautiful natural environment and the recreational opportunities it provides.
For local users interested in Josephine Camp Campground, it would be wise to come prepared for a more rustic camping experience. This includes bringing all necessary supplies, such as water, food, shelter, and waste disposal bags. It would also be prudent to exercise caution regarding potential hazards like broken glass and to prioritize cleaning up their own campsite and any litter they may encounter to help preserve the beauty of this free resource. Additionally, understanding that availability is on a first-come, first-served basis is crucial for planning a trip, especially during popular times.
In conclusion, Josephine Camp Campground near Selma, Oregon, offers a unique opportunity for 'camping near me' enthusiasts seeking a free and nature-oriented experience. Its beautiful riverside location provides a setting for relaxation and various activities like fishing, swimming, and hiking. However, potential visitors should be aware of the reported issue with litter and be prepared for potentially limited amenities. By embracing a Leave No Trace ethic and coming well-prepared, local users can likely enjoy the "very cool" and "very clean" river access and the overall beauty of this free camping destination.

Josephine Camp Campground Reviews
So relaxing and beautiful. I only wish that people would clean up after themselves, because broken glass was everywhere. Other then that, I loved it and it's the best free place I've ever been. You can also fish, hike, catch crawdads, catch frogs and swim if it's not too cold.

Apr 08, 2025 · Mike LoganWhile on a traveling round about with my dogs, I came across this little gem of a campground. Although my dogs are very loving their size and stature can make some people uneasy, so I like quiet less populated areas... if that's what your looking for than Josephine Campground I suggest. Less is more for Chief, LunaC and me.
Jul 15, 2022 · Vickie BellMy favorite free camping spot EVER!We've been on a road-trip for a few weeks and this place was unbelievable. We were fortunate to have awesome campers to share the few other spots with, including one who was a local and a few other travelers who showed us some really stunning views, a majestic ancient tree, some crazy looking carnivorous plants and trails that led to various areas where you can enjoy the river.Tons of local wildlife around here too so keep your food locked up tight. They don't provide bear boxes for this site.Just don't be one of those people who leave their garage behind. If you see some garbage and it fits in your garbage bag, please help clean up, even if just a little. If you see someone litter, please say something.
Jul 15, 2018 · Hector PadinOne of the most beautiful spots ive camped. I try and go to different spots but this one has all the glitz and glam u can ask for; sand rocks to jump off shallow enough to roll ur pants up and walk or sit a chair in just perfect! But there are small leaches... So maybe not the best lol but i only found um at the home made dams.. Have a great time
