Brown Mountain Campground Introduce
Are you a local user searching within the "camping near me" category for a tranquil mountain getaway? Consider Brown Mountain Campground, situated near Meeteetse and Kirwin, Wyoming, with a listed address of Meeteetse, WY 82433, USA. This campground, located in a picturesque area, has garnered positive feedback from visitors who appreciate its spacious sites and serene environment along the Wood River.
Within the realm of "camping near me," Brown Mountain Campground offers a distinct experience for those seeking a peaceful retreat in the mountains of Wyoming. According to a satisfied camper, it is a favored choice compared to other campgrounds near Kirwin, specifically noting its advantages in terms of space and the presence of the beautiful Wood River right by the campground. The description of it as a "very peaceful place in the mountains" underscores its appeal for those looking to escape the noise and congestion of more developed areas.
The environment surrounding Brown Mountain Campground is a significant draw for visitors. Located outside of both Kirwin and Meeteetse, Wyoming, it offers access to the stunning natural beauty of the region. The presence of the Wood River as a feature directly adjacent to the campground enhances the scenic value and provides opportunities for enjoying the water. The mountainous setting suggests potential for hiking and exploring the surrounding wilderness. The proximity to the old gold mining ghost town of Kirwin, just 7 miles up the road, adds a unique element of historical exploration to a camping trip here.
Based on the positive review, Brown Mountain Campground offers several appealing features. It is noted to provide "more space" compared to other nearby campgrounds, which is a significant advantage for campers seeking privacy and room to spread out. The presence of outhouses indicates basic restroom facilities are available. Fire rings at the campsites allow for campfires and outdoor cooking, enhancing the traditional camping experience. The most prominent feature mentioned is the beautiful Wood River, suggesting opportunities for fishing, wading, or simply enjoying the soothing sounds of the flowing water.
The proximity to the ghost town of Kirwin is another unique feature. Being only 7 miles away and accessible by ATV or vehicle via a dirt road offers campers the chance to explore a piece of local history and enjoy a different kind of outdoor adventure. This combination of natural beauty and historical interest makes Brown Mountain Campground a potentially enriching destination.
However, it is critical to address a concerning piece of information from another review: "CAMPGROUND CLOSED DUE TO LACK OF FUNDS!" This review, although expressing frustration with the Forest Service's communication, explicitly states the campground's closure. This is a significant piece of information that cannot be ignored. While the positive review paints a picture of an appealing campground, the closure due to funding issues overrides these positive aspects for the present time.
The user who reported the closure also provided additional location details, stating that Brown Mountain Campground is "3 miles beyond the Wood River campground and is about 25 miles from the town of Meeteetse, WY." This helps to further pinpoint its location relative to nearby landmarks and towns. The frustration expressed about the lack of clear communication regarding the closure (no notice on Google or the main highway) highlights a potential challenge for prospective visitors who might travel there unaware of its status.
The review also mentions that the Wood River Campground was open but fully occupied by large RVs, with a suggestion for the Forest Service to reserve a portion of sites for tent campers. While this is feedback about a different campground, it underscores the demand for camping in the area and the potential disappointment of arriving at a desired location only to find it closed or unsuitable for one's camping style.
Given the critical information about the closure due to lack of funds, any discussion of services, features, or promotional information becomes moot until the campground reopens. Local users considering "camping near me" should be aware of this reported closure and verify the current operating status with the Forest Service before planning a trip to Brown Mountain Campground.
The provided phone numbers, (307) 527-6921 and +1 307-527-6921, can be used to contact the Forest Service directly to inquire about the current status of Brown Mountain Campground, potential reopening plans, and any other relevant information. It is strongly recommended that local users call these numbers to get the most up-to-date details before making any travel arrangements.
In conclusion, while Brown Mountain Campground has been described as a peaceful and spacious mountain retreat near Meeteetse and Kirwin, Wyoming, offering access to the beautiful Wood River and the historic Kirwin ghost town, recent information indicates that the campground is currently closed due to a lack of funds. Local users searching for "camping near me" in this area should be aware of this closure and verify the campground's operating status by contacting the Forest Service directly at the provided phone numbers before planning a visit. The positive attributes highlighted in past reviews suggest that it could be a desirable destination if and when it reopens.

Brown Mountain Campground Reviews
We love this campground outside of Kirwin, Wyoming and Meeteetse, Wyoming. Of the two up near Kirwin, we like Brown Mountain the best. It offers more space, outhouses, fire rings, and the beautiful Wood River right by the campground. It's a very peaceful place in the mountains. 7 miles up the road is the old gold mining ghost town of Kirwin to explore. You can take an ATV or a vehicle up the dirt road to check it out.
Sep 15, 2018 · Sugar Walker-MiddletonCAMPGROUND CLOSED DUE TO LACK OF FUNDS! Only marking one star because of the incompetence of the forest service. This campground is 3 miles beyond the Wood River campground and is about 25 miles from the town of Meeteetse, WY. The forest service could post a note on either Google or on somewhere on the main highway that suggests that the campground is closed. But they haven't. So we drove all the way there for nothing. The wood river campground is open but when I drove by, all sites were occupied by humongous RVs. How about reserving at least half the sites for tent people? Very disappointed.
