Wood River Campground

Wood River Rd, Meeteetse, WY 82433, USA

Updating my review from last year. Because this site is no-camping fee, people hoard camp sites at this location. When I drove by this year hoping to camp, all sites were occupied by large RVs who will not even sleep outside their vehicles. How about reserving at least half the sites for tent campers? The Brown Mountain campground is also closed and there is no notification anywhere on the highway. So you drive there for nothing.Note: Do not go to this area unless you are willing to risk not getting a campsite and waste your time.Previous Review:Serendipitously ended up at this campground during a scientific field expedition. It's a small campground but the surroundings offer breathtaking views of valleys, mountains and serene landscapes. You can hear the wood river whether it's day or night. Roughly 12 miles from the abandoned mining town of Kirwin, WY. An interesting tidbit I learned after our visit was that Amelia Earhart and her husband were having a cabin built near Kirwin before her plane went missing.Plan on spending an entire weekend if you could. I highly recommend it.p.s. This campground will be closed temporarily in August 2019 for repairs, but it's supposed to open up not too long after. Make sure you call the forest service before your trip. - Vikram Chhatre

Wood River Campground Introduce

For those in search of "camping near me" that promises stunning natural beauty, Wood River Campground, located on Wood River Rd in Meeteetse, Wyoming, might initially appear to be an enticing option. Situated approximately 12 miles from the intriguing abandoned mining town of Kirwin, WY, this small campground is lauded for its breathtaking views encompassing valleys, mountains, and serene landscapes. The gentle murmur of the Wood River provides a constant, soothing backdrop for campers, day and night, creating an immersive natural experience.

One past visitor, who serendipitously discovered the campground during a scientific field expedition, highly recommended spending an entire weekend at Wood River Campground, emphasizing the captivating surroundings. Adding a touch of historical intrigue, the reviewer also noted that Amelia Earhart and her husband were in the process of having a cabin built near Kirwin before her fateful disappearance, connecting this natural haven to a significant piece of American history.

The campground itself is described as having at least five great spots specifically suited for tent camping. Additionally, it offers a well-maintained vault toilet for basic sanitation needs. However, prospective visitors should take note of a crucial piece of advice: bringing bug spray is highly recommended, suggesting that insects can be a factor in the area, particularly during certain times of the year.

It is essential for anyone considering Wood River Campground as their choice for "camping near me" to be aware of a significant recent update regarding campsite availability. A more recent review paints a less idyllic picture, highlighting a potential drawback of the campground's no-camping fee policy. According to this update, the lack of fees has led to a situation where individuals, often in large RVs, tend to occupy campsites for extended periods, even without actively camping outside their vehicles. This "hoarding" of campsites can severely limit the availability for other visitors, especially those with tents who might be seeking a spot for a shorter duration.

The reviewer who provided this update expressed frustration at driving to the location with the hope of camping only to find all sites occupied. They further suggested the implementation of a reservation system, at least for half of the campsites, specifically designated for tent campers. This recommendation underscores the potential difficulty that tent campers might face in securing a spot due to the current unmanaged access.

Adding to the concerns about accessibility in the area, the same reviewer noted the closure of the nearby Brown Mountain campground without any visible notification along the highway. This lack of information could lead to wasted time and effort for travelers intending to camp in that vicinity. Therefore, it is crucial for potential visitors to Wood River Campground and other nearby areas to verify the operational status of campgrounds before embarking on their trip.

Based on the recent feedback, it is imperative for those considering Wood River Campground for their "camping near me" experience to be prepared for the possibility of not finding an available campsite. The reviewer explicitly advises against traveling to this area unless visitors are willing to risk this outcome and potentially waste their time. This cautionary note should be taken seriously by anyone planning a trip, especially during peak seasons or weekends when demand for campsites is likely to be higher.

In summary, Wood River Campground presents a paradox for those searching for "camping near me." On one hand, it offers stunning natural beauty, the soothing sounds of the Wood River, and proximity to historical points of interest like Kirwin. It also provides basic amenities such as tent-friendly spots and a vault toilet. On the other hand, its no-fee policy appears to have inadvertently created an issue with campsite availability, with long-term occupancy by RVs potentially blocking access for other campers, particularly those with tents. The lack of a reservation system exacerbates this issue.

While there is no specific promotional information available, the inherent appeal of a free campground in a scenic location might be considered a form of attraction in itself. However, the recent review strongly suggests that the practical reality of securing a campsite might outweigh this benefit for many potential visitors.

Therefore, if you are considering Wood River Campground for "camping near me," it is highly recommended that you contact the relevant authorities, such as the forest service, at the provided phone number, (307) 527-6921 or mobile phone +1 307-527-6921, to inquire about the current situation regarding campsite availability and any potential changes in management or policies. While the natural beauty of Wood River Campground remains a draw, prospective visitors must be aware of the potential challenges in securing a campsite due to its no-fee status and the reported tendency for long-term occupancy. Plan accordingly and be prepared to have alternative camping options in mind should Wood River Campground be full upon your arrival.
