Camp 4 Group Campground Introduce
Nestled along the scenic Volcanic Legacy Byway near Hat Creek, California, Camp 4 Group Campground offers a serene and communal camping experience for those seeking an escape into nature. As a featured location within the "camping near me" category, Camp 4 provides a convenient and accessible outdoor retreat for local adventurers. This campground serves as an excellent basecamp for exploring the natural beauty of the region, including its rivers, trails, and the renowned McCloud Falls, all while fostering a sense of community among campers.
The environment at Camp 4 Group Campground is characterized by its tranquil atmosphere and natural beauty. Situated alongside a river with a strong and cold current, the campground offers a refreshing natural element to your stay. The presence of mature trees provides shade and contributes to the peaceful ambiance of the area. Campers have frequently noted the beauty of the surroundings, making it an ideal spot for those looking to unwind and connect with nature. The central fire ring stands out as a significant feature, creating a natural gathering point for groups to socialize, share stories, and enjoy the warmth of a communal fire under the starry California sky.
In terms of services and amenities, Camp 4 Group Campground provides essential facilities to ensure a comfortable camping experience. Each campsite is equipped with picnic tables, offering a dedicated space for dining and other outdoor activities. A toilet facility is also available for campers' convenience. It is important to note that the campground does not provide running water, so campers need to plan accordingly and bring their own water supply for drinking, cooking, and hygiene purposes. This aspect is crucial for a well-prepared and enjoyable stay at Camp 4.
One of the key features of Camp 4 Group Campground is its suitability for group camping. The layout and the central fire ring particularly cater to larger parties traveling together, making it an excellent choice for family reunions, gatherings of friends, or organized group outings. The spaciousness of the campground allows for a comfortable setup for multiple tents and vehicles, fostering a sense of shared outdoor living.
Beyond the campground itself, its location offers convenient access to a variety of natural attractions and outdoor activities. The presence of nice trails along the river provides opportunities for leisurely walks, nature observation, and enjoying the riparian environment. A significant highlight is its close proximity to McCloud Falls, a popular destination known for its stunning three-tiered waterfall. A short drive from Camp 4 allows campers to easily explore the beauty of these falls and the surrounding hiking trails within the McCloud River area.
However, based on user reviews, it's important for potential visitors to be aware of certain considerations. Mosquitoes can be prevalent at times, so bringing insect repellent is highly recommended to ensure a comfortable stay, especially during warmer months. Additionally, while the river is a beautiful feature, fishing may not be optimal unless near a stocking truck, according to one review. This suggests that anglers looking for a prime fishing spot might need to explore other nearby locations.
Another point raised by a camper is the potential for overcrowding during weekends and holidays. This indicates that Camp 4 Group Campground has become a popular choice, and visitors planning trips during peak seasons should be prepared for a potentially busier environment. Furthermore, there was a mention of inconsiderate use of garbage containers by visitors from the adjacent day-use area. While this may not be a consistent issue, it highlights the importance of responsible waste management and respecting campground rules for all users.
Regarding wildlife, one review humorously mentioned "critters" with a particular fondness for pepperoncini. This serves as a friendly reminder to all campers to practice proper food storage techniques. Keeping food securely locked away is essential in any natural environment to prevent attracting animals and ensuring the safety of both campers and wildlife. This proactive measure contributes to a harmonious coexistence with the local fauna.
In summary, Camp 4 Group Campground presents a beautiful and tranquil camping option within the "camping near me" category for those exploring the Hat Creek and Volcanic Legacy Scenic Byway region. Its stunning natural environment, highlighted by the nearby river and the central fire ring, creates a welcoming atmosphere for group gatherings. The provision of picnic tables and a toilet adds to the basic comforts, while the proximity to attractions like McCloud Falls enhances its appeal as a base for exploration. However, potential visitors should be mindful of the need to bring their own water, the potential for mosquitoes, and the possibility of crowds during peak times. By being well-prepared and considerate of the environment and fellow campers, visitors can fully enjoy the unique charm and natural beauty of Camp 4 Group Campground.
For those seeking a communal and nature-immersed camping experience near Hat Creek, Camp 4 Group Campground offers a compelling option. Its blend of natural beauty, essential amenities, and group-friendly features makes it a noteworthy destination within the local camping landscape. Remember to check for any current advisories or regulations before your visit and to practice Leave No Trace principles to help preserve the beauty of this area for future generations.

Camp 4 Group Campground Reviews
Beautiful, tranquil camp with an amazing central fire ring. The river was full and fast flowing, very cold but refreshing. Picnic tables and a toilet are great. No running water. Nice trails along the river and only a short drive to McCloud falls. Keep all food locked away, there are critters. (Pepperoncini fans apparently, haha!)
Jun 13, 2023 · Rebecca GoldieNice campground but beware LOTS of Mosquitoes and no fish unless you are near a stocking truck. And this site is next to day use site that rude people fill up the garbage containers with tons of home garbage (I was there and saw it) I have camped up their most of my life and it now gets very crowded during any weekend or holiday.
May 12, 2019 · Mark TannehillMy favorite place in California. Visited this campsite multiple times. Even got married at camp 4. My only suggestion would be another set of garbage cans. But it's my paradise 💖
