Panther Meadow Campground Introduce
For local outdoor enthusiasts searching for "camping near me," particularly those with a penchant for high-altitude adventures and hiking Mt. Shasta, Panther Meadow Campground near McCloud, California, offers a unique and convenient option. Located in McCloud, CA 96057, USA, and reachable by phone at (530) 926-4511 or +1 530-926-4511, this campground serves primarily as a no-reservation, accessible basecamp for exploring the majestic Mt. Shasta region.
Based on feedback from visitors, the experience at Panther Meadow Campground varies significantly depending on the time of year. One reviewer noted that a mid-November visit resulted in the area being "completely snowed over." While this snowy landscape was appreciated by that particular visitor, it's important to note that those hoping to experience the "scenic meadow walk" are advised to visit during the spring or summer months when the snow has receded and the meadow is likely in full bloom.
For those interested in seeing the area under a blanket of snow, parking is available at Bunny Flat from November 1st onwards, as the road to Panther Meadow is typically closed after this date. From Bunny Flat, it's approximately a 2-mile walk up the road to reach Panther Meadow. This detail is crucial for planning visits during the late fall and winter.
A significant feature of Panther Meadow Campground is that "you don't need a reservation here." This makes it a flexible option for spontaneous trips or for those who haven't planned far in advance. Its location at a "very high altitude" and its proximity to the "old ski bowl trailhead" make it particularly appealing for hikers planning an early morning ascent of Mt. Shasta. The convenience of camping close to the trailhead can significantly reduce travel time on the day of a climb.
However, it's essential to be aware of the limited amenities at Panther Meadow Campground itself. According to the review, "There are no restrooms, fire pits, or any other amenities" directly at the campground. Campers should come prepared for a more primitive experience. Fortunately, for those needing restroom facilities, they can be found about 0.5 miles downhill near the Bunny Flat Trailhead.
Parking at Panther Meadow Campground involves using a "common parking space which is pretty huge." This suggests ample parking availability, which is beneficial for those arriving at different times. The reviewer explicitly states, "If you haven't reserved any site, this is your camp-at place," reinforcing its role as a no-reservation camping area.
In the context of "camping near me," Panther Meadow Campground offers a specific type of experience tailored towards high-altitude access and hiking, particularly for Mt. Shasta. Its key features include:
- High-altitude location providing direct access to the Mt. Shasta area and the old ski bowl trailhead.
- No reservation required, offering flexibility for campers.
- Proximity to Bunny Flat Trailhead (0.5 miles downhill) where restrooms are available.
- Large common parking area.
- Scenic meadow that is best experienced in the spring or summer.
- Accessibility for snowshoeing or winter hiking via a 2-mile walk from Bunny Flat when the road is closed (after November 1st).
Given the lack of amenities like restrooms and fire pits at the immediate campground, potential visitors should be well-prepared with their own supplies and be comfortable with a more backcountry-style camping experience. The proximity to Bunny Flat for restrooms is a helpful consideration, but campers should factor this short drive or walk into their planning.
For local users interested in hiking Mt. Shasta, Panther Meadow Campground serves as an ideal staging point, allowing for an early start to the ascent. The no-reservation policy simplifies planning, although it's always wise to arrive early, especially during peak seasons, to secure a good spot. The contrast between the snow-covered landscape of late fall/winter and the potential beauty of the meadow in spring/summer highlights the seasonal variations of this location.
While no specific promotional offers are mentioned, the primary draw of Panther Meadow Campground is its strategic location for accessing Mt. Shasta and its no-reservation nature. For local hikers and outdoor enthusiasts, this convenience in itself is a significant benefit. The campground caters to a specific need: providing a readily available camping spot close to the mountain, particularly for those aiming to hike or explore the area around the old ski bowl trailhead.
In summary, Panther Meadow Campground is a high-altitude, no-reservation camping area near McCloud, primarily serving as a base for exploring Mt. Shasta. It offers a large parking area and convenient access to the old ski bowl trailhead. While it lacks on-site restrooms and other amenities (which are available nearby at Bunny Flat), its strategic location makes it a valuable option for hikers and those seeking a more basic camping experience in the Mt. Shasta region. Be sure to consider the seasonal conditions, especially if your goal is to see the meadow, which is best in spring or summer. For those planning a Mt. Shasta climb, the proximity of Panther Meadow Campground makes it a highly practical choice for "camping near me."

Panther Meadow Campground Reviews
We went there in mid November so it was completely snowed over which was fine for us although if you are going for the scenic meadow walk go in spring or summer! If however you want to see it covered in snow you can park at bunny flat and walk up the road (as the road is closed from Nov. 1) to panther meadow - around 2 miles.
Nov 20, 2016 · David IrishYou don't need a reservation here. It's located at very high altitude and very close to the old ski bowl trailhead, so if you are planning to hike Mt Shasta early morning next day, this is a great place to camp at night. There are no restrooms, fire pits, or any other amenities. If you drive about 0.5 mile down hill, you will find restrooms near Bunny Flat Trailhead. You have to park your car on the common parking space which is pretty huge. If you haven't reserved any site, this is your camp-at place.

Table & fire ring opt (if fire is permitted) for use. Lots of LOVE UP HERE!!! Super nice individuals meet along on my visit here. No issues with our tent on this day either. Would have loved to stay longer but my traveling friend had to go early. Was a pleasant say still, where most people looked after each other. Feel free to say hello to your neighbors if they are open to this Love! A Lil kindness goes a long way for us all! ~°•♡•°~Made a fun friend for my Lil one too. Beautiful Souls Here!! :D ♡
Sep 09, 2018 · Krystal LeggettMy favorite place for camping in Mount Shasta. Walk-in camp with only 15 sites, bathroom, no water, there's a natural stream 0.5 miles down. 3 day camping limit, mostly occupied. Great for star gazing, clear sky at 7,500 feet. Easy access to hikes.
