Camp Atterbury Campground Introduce
Looking for "camping near me" in the Edinburgh, Indiana area? Camp Atterbury Campground, located in Edinburgh, IN 46124, USA, presents a unique camping option with specific eligibility requirements. According to a recent update (June 2023), this campground is exclusively open to military personnel and State of Indiana employees. Let's examine the available customer reviews to understand its environment, services, and features for those who qualify.
One reviewer expressed a profoundly negative experience, alleging the campground to be "homophobic and racist." This individual, a 23-year Army retiree, described feeling shame from the staff and other people at the campground, specifically citing homophobia. They stated they would not return due to these experiences.
In contrast, another reviewer provided a more detailed account in June 2023, painting a picture of a "wonderful campground" while also noting some drawbacks. This reviewer mentioned that the price was "a little high for a military campground." They highlighted the presence of a "beautiful pool" located a short walk away, but noted that it was closed due to the lack of lifeguards, which they attributed to potentially insufficient pay to attract staff to the rural area. Similarly, a nearby Post snack bar (two blocks away) was reportedly permanently closed. A small PX is about a mile away but is closed on Sundays, which the reviewer pointed out is when many soldiers might be there.
Regarding the location, the reviewer noted that the closest grocery and big box stores are about a 20-minute drive away, indicating a somewhat rural setting. Positively, they mentioned that the Campground Host, Mark, is "very nice and available almost all the time." For recreational activities, there is a stocked pond for catch and release fishing. Concerning the bathhouses, the reviewer reported no hot water at the East bathhouse. The West bathhouse shower had good hot water, but the sinks in the West bathhouse did not provide hot water for shaving.
Finally, this reviewer indicated they would likely check the prices at a nearby public County campground (outside the National Guard Camp fence) the following year, suggesting that while they found aspects of Camp Atterbury Campground appealing, the cost and some of the amenity issues were considerations.
Based on these reviews, we can summarize the environment, services, and features of Camp Atterbury Campground for eligible local users seeking "camping near me":
- Environment: Described as "wonderful" by one reviewer, suggesting a pleasant setting. It is located within the vicinity of Camp Atterbury, implying a military-affiliated environment. However, one user reported a negative social atmosphere. The surrounding area is somewhat rural, with essential shopping a 20-minute drive away.
- Services:
- Full hookups are likely available, though not explicitly stated.
- A pool is present but was closed (as of June 2023) due to a lack of lifeguards.
- A PX is about a mile away, closed on Sundays.
- Campground Host, Mark, is noted as very nice and available.
- A stocked pond for catch and release fishing is on-site.
- Bathhouses are available, with hot water limitations reported (no hot water in the East bathhouse, good hot shower but no hot sink water in the West bathhouse).
- Features: The primary feature is its accessibility to military personnel and State of Indiana employees only. It offers a location within the Camp Atterbury area. The presence of a pool and fishing pond adds to the recreational potential, though the pool's closure is a current limitation.
Promotional information is not explicitly provided. However, the mention of a "wonderful campground" and the availability of a pool and fishing pond could be seen as positive aspects for potential visitors who meet the eligibility criteria. The helpfulness of the Campground Host, Mark, also adds to the potential appeal.
For local military personnel and State of Indiana employees looking for "camping near me," Camp Atterbury Campground offers a location within the Edinburgh area with certain amenities. However, it's crucial to consider the mixed feedback regarding the social environment and the limitations with some facilities (closed snack bar and pool, hot water issues in bathhouses). The price being "a little high for a military campground" is also a factor to weigh.
Prospective campers who are eligible to stay here should perhaps contact the campground directly to inquire about the current status of the pool and other amenities, as well as to get a sense of the current social atmosphere. The phone number for Camp Atterbury might be available through the Camp Atterbury Joint Maneuver Training Center. Given the strong negative feedback from one user regarding the social climate, and the more nuanced review from another, it would be wise for potential visitors to gather more information before deciding to stay.
In conclusion, Camp Atterbury Campground is a restricted-access campground near Edinburgh, IN, available to military and State of Indiana employees. While one reviewer found it "wonderful" and praised the host, another reported severe issues with the social environment. The campground offers a pool and fishing pond, though the pool was closed at the time of one review. There are also some limitations with nearby facilities and bathhouse hot water. Eligible local users seeking "camping near me" should consider these points and potentially seek further information before their visit.

Camp Atterbury Campground Reviews
This is the worst campground! I have ever stayed in homophobic and racist. I retired here after 23 years in the army, and all I have ever done was put the shame by the staff and the people and the person that runs the campground homophobic. It’s not contagious. It’s me and who I am yes at 17 I join the army and I get straight white people they get to judge me no no more bye You racist homophobes damn
Jan 12, 2025 · J KeUpdated June 2023. Open to military and State of Indiana employees only. Wonderful campground. Price is a little high for a military campground. There is a beautiful pool only a one block walk away but it is closed because they could not get lifeguards (you need to pay enough to make it worthwhile to drive to your rural area). A Post snack bar a short two block walk away is permanently closed too. Small PX about a mile away, closed on Sundays when many soldiers are there. About a 20 minute drive to the closest grocery and big box stores. Campground Host, Mark is very nice and available almost all the time. Stocked pond fishing is catch and release. No hot water at the East bathhouse. Good hot water in the shower at the West bathhouse but I never got hot water from the sinks in order to shave. I think next year I will check out the price at the public County campground a short distance away but outside the National Guard Camp fence.
