This immediately sets a positive tone, highlighting the overall appeal of the location. The reviewer specifically praised several aspects, including "Level sites, beautiful trees, water views… lots of green space, trails, bike paths, benches in common areas." This paints a picture of a well-designed campground that takes advantage of its natural setting, offering both comfortable camping spots and opportunities for outdoor activities and relaxation.
The spaciousness of the campsites was also a significant positive point, with the reviewer noting, "The sites are extremely spacious (ours was anyway… we had number 18)." Having ample space at a campsite enhances privacy and comfort, allowing room for various camping setups and outdoor gear. The enjoyment of riding bikes around and appreciating the shade provided by the beautiful trees further underscores the pleasant environment of the campground.
The staff also received commendation, with the reviewer stating, "The attendants at the booth were very helpful with our questions…." Friendly and helpful campground staff can greatly enhance the overall camping experience, providing assistance and information to make the stay more enjoyable.
In terms of site availability, the review mentions that "They have some reservable sites and others that are first come first served…" This offers flexibility for campers who prefer to plan ahead and those who might be making more spontaneous trips. The variety of locations, with "some are right on the water (lake) and some are set back… all are beautiful," allows campers to choose a setting that best suits their preferences, whether they desire direct lake access or a more secluded spot.
Perhaps one of the most appealing aspects highlighted was the affordability, with the reviewer mentioning their site cost "$18 a night." This makes Carlyle Lake Dam West Campground an accessible option for budget-conscious campers looking for a quality experience.
The reviewer also briefly mentioned "another smaller portion of the campground that sits across the street from the lake that was nice too," but clearly preferred the side they stayed on, indicating that the Dam West side offers a particularly desirable camping experience.
Another camper who stayed for four nights in September 2024 also had high praise for the campground. They noted that "site 50 is breathtaking," even though it was "electric only." This suggests that even without full hookups, some sites offer exceptional views or locations. This reviewer also highlighted the pull-through nature of their site, which is a significant convenience for RVers. The affordability was again emphasized, with this camper paying "$9 a night with our lifetime seiners pass," indicating potential discounts for certain passes, although the regular rates also appear to be reasonable based on the other review.

Oct 12, 2024 · Teresa Ghioto WernimontStayed: 9/15/2024 to 9/19/2024. We had 4 nights here site 50 is breathtaking, electric only. Pull through. We paid $9 a night with our lifetime seiners pass. All sites are huge here. And some have EW-S.
Feb 21, 2025 · Shelley AlloreThe spots are large. We probably could have set up 5 tents and still had room. The lake side lots are a smaller but still larger than most. I didn't sleep tho because there was a party crew up most of the night keeping everyone in tents awake..... so the actual point of being here from one night was a fail.... I got small naps in between the loud laughter and roars.
Oct 13, 2024 · James MartinI love camping. Going to a Corp of engineers camp ground is a way better experience than a state owned campground. The bathroom/ shower is cleaned EVERYDAY! The lady that does it is there at 7 am cleaning our bathroom. Walls, showers, doors, knobs, toilets, of course. I even watched her sweep the playground equipment. ( every 2 weeks, ) Then 2 times a week, she cleans out the firepits of ash. I did see another lady cleaning one day. Some people are not appreciated enough. I am posting this to say .....these woman should get a raise...I thanked them in person and now I'm thanking them to the world ! Have a great winter of bathroom ladies. The campground bathroom is cleaner than some restaurant ( that recently had lystria) that " are practicing better sanitary guidelines " Those guidelines SHOULD ALWAYS BE PRACTICED, not justwhen you're open. Does anyone remember the Plandemic? Anyway, I think I'm getting a point across.
Oct 23, 2024 · Tracy Christ (Dancin'Tracy)***Update, the tree between 76 and 78 has been cut down. In September we were on site 84. A large tree branch came down between 84 and 85 and it hit the car of the campers on site 85. Again I recommend checking out dying trees before you park your RV and vehicles***If you stay on sites 76 or 78 there is a huge dead tree between the sites. A recent storm dropped this branch on our camper. We reported to the fee booth. We were told that someone came out to access the tree while we were gone. There are a few dead trees in the campground that need to be removed. The dead trees are dangerous to campers during storms. Before you book a site, check the tree situation for that area.
