Environment and Ambiance:
Based on feedback from fellow campers, Coles Creek Campground boasts generously sized lots, providing ample space and a sense of privacy. The grounds feature plenty of grassy areas between sites, enhancing the feeling of openness and comfort. While the landscape is currently more open than heavily forested, the presence of approximately 300 planted sapling trees suggests a future with increased shade and natural screening between campsites. This thoughtful addition indicates a commitment to enhancing the long-term appeal and comfort of the campground.
Visitors during the early September shoulder season have described the campground as particularly peaceful, attracting a mature and friendly crowd. The quiet atmosphere, free from loud music and excessive noise, makes it an ideal location for those seeking relaxation and tranquility. The overall ambiance is one of a well-maintained and thoughtfully planned camping destination.
Services and Amenities:
While specific details on all amenities aren't exhaustively listed in the provided reviews, we can glean valuable insights into the services offered. The mention of a $5 per day parking fee at the nearby B2 boat launch ramps indicates convenient access to Carlyle Lake for water-based activities. This is a significant advantage for campers interested in boating, kayaking, or simply enjoying the waterfront.
The positive feedback from a family with a puppy highlights the pet-friendly nature of Coles Creek Campground, making it an excellent choice for those who travel with their furry companions. The reviewer's enjoyable three-day stay further suggests that the campground provides a comfortable and accommodating environment for families.
Features and Highlights:
The primary feature of Coles Creek Campground is its proximity to Carlyle Lake, one of the largest man-made lakes in Illinois. The easy access to the B2 boat launch ramps opens up a world of recreational opportunities, including boating, fishing, and exploring the vast expanse of water. The lake's significant size ensures ample space for maneuvering boats, even during busier times, and offers a welcome escape for water enthusiasts.
The spaciousness of the individual campsites is another key feature, providing more room for RVs, tents, and outdoor living areas compared to some other campgrounds. This allows campers to spread out and enjoy a greater sense of personal space. The ongoing effort to plant trees will further enhance the appeal of the campground over time, adding shade and visual interest to the landscape.
The peaceful and quiet atmosphere, particularly during the off-peak season, is a major draw for those seeking a relaxing getaway. The mature and friendly demographic of campers contributes to this serene environment, making it an ideal setting for unwinding and enjoying nature.
Promotional Information and Considerations:
Based on the positive reviews, Coles Creek Campground is highly recommended for individuals and families looking for a well-maintained, spacious, and peaceful camping experience near Carlyle Lake. Its pet-friendly policy further broadens its appeal.
However, the reviews also offer some constructive feedback that potential visitors might want to consider. The suggestion to restrict fishing from the boat launch ramps is worth noting for those planning to use these facilities. The lack of dedicated walking trails is another point for those who enjoy hiking or leisurely strolls within the campground.
The discrepancy between the reservation check-in confirmation time (5 pm) and the office closing time (6 pm) could potentially cause confusion for late arrivals. It's advisable to confirm the office hours when making a reservation. Additionally, the situation where new occupants arrived at a site before the previous occupants' published checkout time (4 pm) suggests a possible communication issue that the campground management may need to address to ensure smooth transitions between reservations.
Despite these minor points, the overall sentiment from the reviews is overwhelmingly positive, highlighting the campground's strengths in terms of spaciousness, peacefulness, and access to Carlyle Lake.
Conclusion:
For local users searching within the "camping near me" category, Coles Creek Campground offers a compelling option. Its large, grassy sites, proximity to Carlyle Lake with boat launch access, and generally peaceful atmosphere make it a standout choice in the Carlyle, IL area. The campground caters well to RVers, families (including those with pets), and individuals seeking a relaxing outdoor retreat. While some minor improvements have been suggested by past visitors, the core experience appears to be highly positive, promising a memorable camping getaway. We encourage you to contact Coles Creek Campground directly at (618) 226-3211 or +1 618-226-3211 to inquire about availability and make your reservation today!

Coles Creek Campground Reviews
A real gem of a rv campground. Of all the locations we’ve been, this is in the top 2 (the other NW Atlanta GA). Huge spacious lots, and plenty of grass space from your neighbors. Fairly open, not forested but seems like 300 sapling trees planted so more shade and privacy in the works. We visited early September after summer season, and very peaceful and mostly adults. Very quiet, no blaring music, mostly seniors so a more mature and friendly crowd. $5/day parking at water where b2 boat launch ramps are. Definitely a huge body of water, top of our future list to launch our inflatable boat as at this time of year plenty of space to maneuver and water traffic minimal. Wish we had a huge body of water as this at home and remote enough to keep the noise down. Only suggestions, don’t allow fishing from boat launch ramps as someone parked at one and set up 3-4 chairs down the ramp as if their property. And need walking trails. Also why reservation checkin confirmation states 5 pm but doesn’t state office closes at 6 pm? Awkwardly we departed at 10:30 am well before the published 4 pm checkout but the next occupants arrived before we departed and front office told them we had left already? Hmmmmmm.
Sep 07, 2024 · H. YeeIt was a great place to stay with my family. We also had a puppy dog and we had no problems with that. We stayed for 3 days and it was so amazing. I have no complaints.
Aug 01, 2024 · Marie GerbigGreat spot. Park was awesome. Ranger and sheriff patrols. They also have evening programs for the kids to learn about animals and the park.
Sep 25, 2024 · Nathan R. ParkerWe had a wonderful time at this campground! It was quite, peaceful, and beautiful! We tent camped and brought both of our dogs. The dogs had a great time and enjoyed the lake! The camp hosts were so nice and very informative! We'll definitely be back!!
Sep 13, 2023 · Alex St. PetersNice campground. We rode our bikes down to the showers. Be careful with where you place your shoes/clothes in the shower, the water was so hard it sprayed under the door and soaked whatever was out there. I didn't like that there wasn't a secure place to put belongings while showering. And the water was so hot and strong that you couldn't actually stand under it.The campsite was quiet with beautiful views. I would stay there again, just don't plan on using the showers.
