Cecil Henderson Montour Trail Campground Introduce
For local residents of Bridgeville, Pennsylvania, and the surrounding Pittsburgh metro area searching for "camping near me," the Cecil Henderson Montour Trail Campground, located off Hickman St, Bridgeville, PA 15017, USA, offers a unique trailside camping experience. Accessible by phone at (412) 257-3011 or +1 412-257-3011, this campground provides free, primitive campsites directly along the popular Montour Trail, catering particularly to hikers and cyclists looking for convenient overnight stops.
The environment of Cecil Henderson Montour Trail Campground is best described as a linear park setting with designated camping spots. Unlike traditional campgrounds with numerous sites clustered together, this location features a long stretch of trail with only five campsites available. This limited number of sites contributes to the quiet atmosphere reported by visitors, making it a potentially more serene option compared to larger, more developed campgrounds in the region. The natural surroundings are appreciated by those who have stayed there, offering a peaceful break amidst their trail activities.
In terms of services, Cecil Henderson Montour Trail Campground offers some essential amenities for primitive camping, all provided free of charge. One significant benefit is the availability of free firewood, located in two different areas along the trail. This eliminates the need for campers to bring their own wood, adding convenience for those traveling light, especially cyclists. Additionally, there is a water fountain available, providing a crucial resource for hydration, and trash cans are provided for waste disposal, helping to keep the area clean. Each of the five campsites is equipped with a fire pit, allowing for campfires and cooking, as well as a picnic table and seating, offering basic comfort for meals and relaxation.
One of the unique features of this campground is that one of the five campsites boasts a shelter large enough to accommodate many people sitting underneath. This could be particularly advantageous in case of rain, providing a dry space for cooking, socializing, or even sleeping for larger groups. The campsites themselves are noted as being "fairly flat for tent campers," making it easier to find a comfortable spot to pitch a tent without significant ground unevenness. While one reviewer mentioned the absence of a dedicated hammock area (referencing another local campsite), the existing amenities cater well to basic camping needs.
The primary feature of Cecil Henderson Montour Trail Campground is its direct access to the Montour Trail, a highly active multi-use trail popular with walkers and cyclists. This trailside location is ideal for those undertaking longer journeys on the Montour Trail, providing convenient and free overnight accommodation. The campground serves as a "perfect camp spot to relax and refresh between bike rides," as noted by one satisfied visitor. This seamless integration with the trail is a major draw for those whose primary activity is using the Montour Trail.
However, the proximity to the active trail also has a potential drawback. One reviewer noted that the campsites are close to the trail and that even early in the morning (6 AM on a Thursday), there was significant foot and bike traffic passing by. This means that while the campground itself is described as quiet, campers should expect a degree of activity due to its location along a well-used trail. For those seeking complete isolation, this might be a consideration. Additionally, some road noise was noted until around 10 PM, although the reviewer mentioned that being on the other side of the parking lot and trail helped to muffle the sound, making it "not too bad."
It's important to understand that Cecil Henderson Montour Trail Campground offers primitive camping. This typically implies basic amenities without features like electrical hookups, running water at each site, or restroom facilities with flush toilets and showers. The presence of a water fountain is a significant plus for a primitive site, but campers should be prepared to be self-sufficient in other aspects, such as bringing their own lighting, cooking equipment, and personal hygiene supplies beyond what the water fountain provides. The lack of restroom facilities is not explicitly mentioned as a drawback in the reviews, suggesting that users of primitive campsites generally come prepared for this.
Regarding promotional information, the most significant "promotion" for Cecil Henderson Montour Trail Campground is its free access and the provision of free firewood. These are substantial benefits that make it an attractive option for budget-conscious travelers and those specifically using the Montour Trail. The positive reviews emphasizing the quiet atmosphere (relative to other campgrounds), spaciousness (compared to a nearby state park), and the convenience for trail users also serve as strong endorsements. For local cyclists and hikers looking for an overnight stop along the Montour Trail, the existence of this free and well-equipped (for primitive camping) option is a significant draw in itself. The mention of friendly staff also adds to the positive image of the campground, although interactions might be less frequent given the self-service nature of primitive camping.
To learn more about any specific regulations, guidelines for use, or any potential temporary closures or advisories, local users can contact the provided phone numbers. Information might also be available through the Montour Trail Council or local parks and recreation websites. As it is a free facility, reservations might not be possible or necessary, but it would be wise to check for any official information regarding site availability, especially during peak seasons or weekends.
In conclusion, Cecil Henderson Montour Trail Campground in Bridgeville, PA, offers a unique and valuable "camping near me" option for local hikers and cyclists utilizing the Montour Trail. Its free primitive campsites, coupled with amenities like free firewood, a water fountain, fire pits, and picnic tables, provide essential comforts for trailside overnight stays. The quiet environment (apart from trail activity and some road noise) and the spaciousness of the sites are appreciated by visitors. While it caters to a more self-sufficient camping style without developed facilities, its direct access to the Montour Trail and the provision of free amenities make it a perfect spot for those looking to relax and refresh during their trail adventures. Local users planning a trip on the Montour Trail should definitely consider this convenient and cost-effective camping option.

Cecil Henderson Montour Trail Campground Reviews
This is basically a park with some primitive campsites. Long trail with five sites. There's free firewood, a water fountain, and a trash can. Each campsite has a fire pit, picnic table, and seats. One of them even has a shelter for many people to sit under. Very nice and very quiet.
May 19, 2018 · Nicole5 free nice primitive campsites along the trail. 4 connect to eachother. Some road noise until 10pm or so. Being on the other side of the parking lot and trail muffled the noise. Not too bad.... Note: the trail is VERY ACTIVE! Thursday morning at 6am people were already walking/riding past and the campsites are close to the trail.Fairly flat for tent campers. Spot 5 has a pavilion to get out of the rain or to camp in I assume. I didn't see a hammock area (see Boggs Campsite for that)Free firewood in 2 locations.Perfect camp spot to relax and refresh between bike rides.
Aug 27, 2021 · Eric BeckleyStopped here on my 53 mile hike last weekend. A great spot to camp. It's right off the trail. It has 3 separate campsites with fire rings and a shelter with a fire ring. There is firewood already cut to use. There is also a water fountain and Port A John to use.
May 23, 2023 · CoryGreat trails and nice place to camp under Mother Nature. Beautiful spots to take pictures and the old tunnel gives a twist to this place.
Oct 11, 2017 · D KI camp here fairly often. There are a few tent spots and a shelter. There is a water fountain and chemical toilet nearby. There is also plenty of dry firewood. Bring a hatchet, as it is not split. It's always clean and well maintained.
