Cerro Alto Campground Introduce
For local residents of Morro Bay and the surrounding areas seeking a tranquil "Camping Near Me" experience away from the immediate coast, Cerro Alto Campground, located on CA-41, Morro Bay, CA 93442, USA, offers a serene mountain retreat. You can reach them at (805) 434-1996 or +1 805-434-1996 for inquiries and potential reservations. Situated in a mountainous region, Cerro Alto Campground provides a different environment compared to the coastal campgrounds in the area, focusing on natural beauty, hiking opportunities, and a quieter atmosphere.
The environment surrounding Cerro Alto Campground is characterized by its mountainous terrain, likely featuring woodlands and natural streams. Reviews mention the presence of a brook near some campsites, adding a pleasant natural soundtrack to the camping experience. The abundance of shade, noted by one reviewer at site 15, suggests a setting with mature trees, providing a cooler and more sheltered camping environment, especially during warmer months. The campground's proximity to a trailhead indicates direct access to hiking trails, making it an ideal destination for those who enjoy exploring the natural landscape on foot. The overall impression from the reviews is one of a peaceful and natural setting, conducive to relaxation and outdoor activities.
In terms of services and features, Cerro Alto Campground offers essential amenities for a comfortable camping experience. The availability of "super clean" bathrooms is consistently highlighted, indicating a well-maintained facility. Fire pits and grills are provided at the campsites, allowing campers to enjoy campfires and outdoor cooking. Firewood is available for purchase at the campground for $10, a convenient option for those who want to have a campfire without bringing their own wood. The campground utilizes vault toilets, which are common in more rustic or remote camping locations. Water is accessible via a spigot located across the road near the bathroom, so campers should plan accordingly for water storage and transport to their individual sites.
A key feature of Cerro Alto Campground is the availability of walk-in campsites, specifically sites 1 through 4. This suggests that these sites may require a short walk from the parking area, potentially offering more seclusion and a more immersive nature experience. One reviewer who stayed at a walk-in site praised the quiet atmosphere, particularly noting the pleasant sound of the nearby creek throughout the night. This tranquility, especially during a weekday in February, suggests that Cerro Alto Campground can be a peaceful escape, particularly outside of peak season. Site 15 is highlighted as a particularly desirable spot, located right next to the brook, offering "lots of rocks for extra seating," proximity to the trailhead, and ample shade.
It's important for potential visitors to note some practical considerations mentioned in the reviews. The road leading to Cerro Alto Campground is described as "twisty and narrow," advising against bringing trailers. This suggests that the campground is primarily suited for tent camping and smaller vehicles. Additionally, cell service appears to be limited, with one reviewer reporting only one bar of service with T-Mobile. Campers should be prepared for limited connectivity, which can be a benefit for those seeking a true escape from technology but is important to consider for communication needs.
The positive feedback regarding the camp host, who is described as "awesome" and experienced, suggests a well-managed and welcoming campground. A helpful and friendly host can significantly enhance the camping experience by providing assistance, maintaining the facilities, and ensuring a pleasant environment for all visitors.
For local users searching for a "Camping Near Me" option that offers a quieter, more natural setting with hiking opportunities, Cerro Alto Campground is an excellent choice. Its mountain environment, clean facilities, and proximity to trails make it ideal for tent campers and those who appreciate a more rustic experience. The availability of walk-in sites further caters to those seeking seclusion. While the narrow, winding road advises against trailers and cell service may be limited, the tranquility and natural beauty of Cerro Alto Campground provide a welcome contrast to more developed or coastal camping options in the area. The positive remarks about the camp host also suggest a well-run and enjoyable camping destination.
Consider Cerro Alto Campground for your next local camping adventure if you value a peaceful mountain setting, access to hiking, and a break from the hustle and bustle. Remember the advice about the road conditions and potential lack of cell service to ensure a well-prepared and enjoyable trip to this serene "Camping Near Me" gem.

Right next to the brook. Close to the trail head and not far from the site just. Lots of shade.Best site in my opinion. The sites aren’t as far in as Google makes it look.1 bar with T-mobile.Fire pits and grillsVault toiletsSpigot is across the road near the bathroom.
Jun 04, 2024 · Beverly MaloneGreat campsite with walk in sites 1-4. Host checked me in for my on day stay while visiting calpoly. Very quiet, but it was a weekday in February. The creek nearby was very pleasant to hear all night. Road is twisty and narrow so leave your trailers at home.
Feb 15, 2024 · Amador AI loved cerro alto campground. Really close to Morro Bay which makes for a quick and fun trip. Also helps cool you down if it’s a hot weekend in the mountain. I stayed in 19 which actually shares a lot with 18 and makes for a good group site. Away and private but close enough to the bathrooms and right next to the trail. There is a lot of poison oak and we did site a bob cat (was told by rangers they weren’t dangerous to human adults). The hike is a lot more strenuous than described, so go earlier in the day to avoid the heat and take enough water. You can’t hang hammocks unless you have flat straps. The camp host Justin was a little rude when we arrived and not really helpful until we started asking more questions. Apart from that the site was really clean including the bathrooms.
Jul 18, 2022 · Ocil HerrejonNeeded to find a car camp site and we found this lovely spot! Came on a weekday, first come first serve, but most are reserved on the weekend. Each site is pretty secluded from one and another except a couple, that two sites might share parking spaces. Went to Tin City one day (15 min drive) and hiked another (all gainz, pretty steep when descending). Will def be coming back.
May 04, 2023 · Anna S.Very thrilling yet I wasn't expecting it to be so steep on boy scout trail. (Love it either or helps with that cardio solo is amazing yet better with a friend I've seen some fresh stuff out there while leaving hope it's a coyote)
