We have been coming here as a family off and on for 20ish years. We stayed in the 100's electric loop. We definitely felt intimidated and uneasy with what the lower loop of 112-124 looked like. Some territorial things going on down at the beach. Seems as if some of these first come first served campsites down by the water may be occupied longer than the 14 days.Still a very beautiful campground, but order seems to be lost. - Steve Niblett

CHIPPEWA LOOP Introduce

For local users in Minnesota and those seeking "camping near me" within the scenic Chippewa National Forest, CHIPPEWA LOOP, located on Norway Beach Rd NW in Cass Lake, MN 56633, USA, has been a familiar destination for many years. The campground's location within the National Forest suggests a naturally beautiful environment with potential access to lakes, trails, and other outdoor recreational opportunities typical of the region.

One long-term visitor, who has been coming to CHIPPEWA LOOP with their family off and on for approximately 20 years, shared their recent experience in the 100's electric loop. The availability of electric hookups in this section is a significant amenity for RV campers and those who rely on electricity for medical devices or comfort. This suggests that CHIPPEWA LOOP caters to a range of camping styles, from tent camping to RV stays.

However, this same reviewer expressed concerns about the lower loop of the campground, specifically sites 112-124, which are described as first-come, first-served and located near the beach. They reported feeling "intimidated and uneasy" with the atmosphere in this area, mentioning "some territorial things going on down at the beach." This could indicate potential issues with campsite boundaries, resource use, or interactions between campers in this specific section. Additionally, the reviewer raised a concern that some of these waterfront, first-come, first-served campsites might be occupied for longer than the 14-day limit typically enforced in National Forest campgrounds. This could lead to limited availability for other visitors and a sense of unfairness among those adhering to the rules.

Despite these concerns, the long-term visitor still acknowledged that CHIPPEWA LOOP remains a "very beautiful campground," highlighting the inherent appeal of its natural setting. However, they noted that "order seems to be lost," which likely refers to the issues they observed in the lower loop and potentially a decline in the overall management or enforcement of campground rules.

Another recent review from a camper who stayed with friends expressed significant disappointment with the maintenance and upkeep of the park. Having camped at CHIPPEWA LOOP for many years in the past and loved it, they noticed a "noticeably run down" condition after a five-year break. Specific issues mentioned include the lack of hot water and a very dirty shower house. This is a serious concern for any camper, as clean and functional restroom facilities are essential for a comfortable and hygienic camping experience. The reviewer emphasized the beauty of the park and stressed the need to maintain basic amenities to continue attracting visitors and campers.

These reviews paint a somewhat mixed picture for local users considering CHIPPEWA LOOP for their "camping near me" trip. On one hand, the campground is located in a beautiful natural setting within the Chippewa National Forest, potentially offering lake access and the tranquility associated with such environments. The availability of electric hookups in at least one loop (the 100's) is a positive feature for some campers. However, the concerns raised about the lower loop (potential territorial behavior and overstaying of limits) and the apparent decline in maintenance and cleanliness (lack of hot water, dirty shower house) are significant drawbacks that potential visitors should be aware of.

For local users considering CHIPPEWA LOOP, it would be prudent to gather more information before making a reservation or planning a visit, especially if the first-come, first-served waterfront sites are of interest. Here are some key areas to investigate further:

  • Current Conditions of Amenities: Contact the Chippewa National Forest Service (using the provided phone number (218) 335-8600 or +1 218-335-8600) to inquire about the current status of the shower houses, including the availability of hot water and the cleanliness.
  • Management of Stay Limits: Ask about the enforcement of the 14-day stay limit in the first-come, first-served areas, particularly the lower loop near the beach.
  • Campsite Availability and Types: Inquire about the different loops within the campground (e.g., the electric loop in the 100's and the first-come, first-served loop in the 112-124 range). Understand the reservation system for each loop (if any for the first-come, first-served areas).
  • Lake Access and Activities: Confirm the accessibility to the lake from different campsites and inquire about permitted activities such as swimming (if there are designated areas), boating, and fishing.
  • General Campground Maintenance: Ask about the overall upkeep of the campground, including campsite maintenance, trash disposal, and the general cleanliness of common areas.
  • Safety and Security: If the "territorial things" mentioned in the review are a concern, inquire about campground security or ranger presence in the area.
  • Fees and Reservations: Obtain up-to-date information on camping fees and the reservation process, particularly for the electric loop. Understand the rules for securing a first-come, first-served site.
  • Pet Policy: If traveling with pets, inquire about the campground's pet regulations.

Given the conflicting feedback – a beautiful location with potential management and maintenance issues – local users should weigh the pros and cons carefully. The natural beauty of the Chippewa National Forest is undeniable, and the availability of electric hookups in some areas is a plus. However, the reported decline in maintenance and the potential for issues in the first-come, first-served area near the lake are significant concerns that could impact the overall camping experience. It is highly recommended to contact the Chippewa National Forest Service directly to get the most current information and make an informed decision about whether CHIPPEWA LOOP is the right "camping near me" destination for your needs.
