Clam Beach County Campground Introduce
For local residents seeking an exceptional "camping near me" experience along the stunning Northern California coast, Clam Beach County Campground in McKinleyville offers a unique opportunity to camp right next to a beautiful beach. Located at Clam Beach Dr, McKinleyville, CA 95519, USA, this campground is described as a "local institution" and a "Humboldt Must See Spot," suggesting its significance and popularity within the community. If you're dreaming of falling asleep to the sound of the waves and waking up to breathtaking ocean views, Clam Beach could be your ideal coastal escape.
Immerse Yourself in the Coastal Environment of Clam Beach
The primary allure of Clam Beach County Campground is its immediate proximity to Clam Beach itself. This "big and beautiful" beach offers a vast expanse of sand for walking, playing, and enjoying the coastal scenery. The reviews highlight the "spectacular sunsets" that can be witnessed from the beach, promising memorable evenings filled with vibrant colors painting the sky over the Pacific Ocean. The sound of the surf will undoubtedly be a constant and soothing backdrop to your camping experience.
The environment around Clam Beach is typical of the Northern California coast, characterized by dramatic cliffs, sandy shores, and the powerful presence of the Pacific Ocean. The air is likely fresh and salty, and the weather can be variable, often featuring cool breezes and occasional fog, especially closer to the water. Dressing in layers is generally recommended for this coastal climate.
The beach being described as "very dog friendly" is a significant feature for pet owners looking for a "camping near me" location where their furry companions are welcome. This suggests that dogs are likely permitted on the beach and within the campground, although it's always wise to check specific regulations regarding leash laws and allowed areas.
The mention of Clam Beach being a "right of passage" and a "Humboldt Must See Spot" indicates its cultural and recreational importance to the local community. This suggests a well-loved and frequently visited location, likely offering a strong sense of place and connection to the natural beauty of the area.
Basic Services and Essential Amenities
According to a recent review, Clam Beach County Campground offers "clean bathrooms and basic amenities (picnic table, grill, etc)." This indicates that while the focus is likely on the natural beach experience, essential comforts are provided for campers. The presence of clean bathrooms is a significant plus for any campground.
The inclusion of "picnic table" and "grill" as basic amenities suggests that each campsite is likely equipped with these for convenient outdoor dining and cooking. These are standard and highly appreciated features for campers looking to enjoy meals in the open air.
The reviewer also noted, "I don’t think there are showers." This is an important piece of information for potential campers, indicating that facilities for showering may not be available at the campground. Campers planning longer stays or those who value showering should take this into consideration and plan accordingly, perhaps utilizing nearby public facilities if available or being prepared for alternative methods of freshening up.
The fact that the campground allows overnight camping is a primary feature, as highlighted in one of the older reviews. This distinguishes Clam Beach from just a day-use beach and provides the opportunity for an extended coastal experience. The longevity of the reviewer's memory ("It’s been a long time but...") suggests that Clam Beach has been a reliable camping destination for many years.

It’s been a long time but if it weren’t for Clam Beach and the fact one can spend the night camping I’d have probably wound up at The Humboldt Hilton more often than I did.Clam Beach is a local institution, right of passage and Humboldt Must See Spot!Love Ya’ Clamster!
May 04, 2025 · Darren Jay BlagdenGreat campsite right next to the beach. Clean bathrooms and basic amenities (picnic table, grill, etc). I don’t think there are showers. The sunsets here are spectacular and the beach is big and beautiful. Very dog friendly
Jul 24, 2024 · Michaela GallagherNice campsites just a short hike to the coast. The sites are a good size, big enough for two tents. Shoes are a must because there are millions of prickles in the sand. Camp host was great and sold firewood for a good price. Only problem was the bathroom seemed to be a pit stop for people passing by. People stopped in to use it through out the night. Overall I would recommend it if your in need of a campsite.
Aug 15, 2024 · Phil ORIGHT BY THE BEACH BUT ALSO RIGHT BY THE HIGHWAY. LOTS OF SAND AND WATER, QUITE COMFY. PEOPLE GOING IN AND OUT LIKE A REVOLVING DOOR, BOUT 8 CARS PULL IN OVERNIGHT ON A WEDNESDAY DOING GOD KNOWS WHAT. WELL I KNOW, NOT PAYING FOR A CAMPSITE THATS FOR SURE.
Sep 19, 2024 · Robert EhlersWonderful little campsite only a 5 minute walk down a trail to the beach. The sites are sand so sleeping was decently comfy. There are plenty of water stickers and the fire rings have grates for cooking. No showers, and the bathrooms were not fancy by any means. The beach is gorgeous and clean. Lots of doggies!
