I had my worst camping experience ever at this site because of the camp host. I have never had a camp host relentlessly trying to engage with me before. It was honestly traumatic. I was lucky my camp neighbor was in law enforcement; I asked him to stand by me so I could pack up and leave on day two. I AM NOT A DRAMA QUEEN. I'm a full time RVer for years, and generally roll with the punches in my travels. But this was so invasive. He'd be standing there as I arrived. He'd come into my camp nonstop with his big German Shepherd -- oh, which bit my arm and bruised it by the way. He would peep through my windows. He'd pop his head in my camper looking for me. He would apply serious guilt trips if you didn't stay in camp to entertain him. I honestly don't have enough words to describe the creepiness... but if you've ever had one of those weird uncles... you know. I don't leave negative reviews, but this feels more like a civic duty to report. SOLO FEMALES BEWARE. I waited a full month to post this because I needed enough distance. The guy really needs constant attention and thinks you sign up to be his audience (or captive) by choosing to camping there. I am not joking. He got upset that I wasn't wanting to drink or dine with him, and said I seemed like a sad person. I AM NOT SAD! I'm freaked out. (Site 7 by the river was lovely otherwise... wish I could have enjoyed it. I couldn't get a moment's peace.) - Jody Colley

For local users searching for "camping near me" in the vicinity of Cody, Wyoming, Clearwater Campground, situated on the N Fork Hwy at the same address as Rex Hale Campground (indicating a potential shared location or proximity), presents a location with notable scenic appeal and river access. You can reach them at (307) 527-6921 or +1 307-527-6921 for inquiries. However, unlike the uniformly positive reviews for Rex Hale Campground, the feedback for Clearwater Campground reveals a stark contrast in experiences, primarily centered around the interactions with the camp host.

One reviewer recounted what they described as their "worst camping experience ever" due to the behavior of the camp host. This individual, a full-time RVer with years of experience, detailed a disturbing pattern of relentless and invasive engagement by the host. Allegations include the host consistently approaching their campsite upon arrival, making non-stop visits accompanied by a large German Shepherd (which reportedly bit and bruised the reviewer's arm), peeping through windows, and looking into their camper. The reviewer also claimed the host applied "serious guilt trips" if they did not remain at their campsite to interact with him and became upset when they declined invitations to drink or dine, even labeling the reviewer as "sad." Describing the experience as "traumatic" and the host's behavior as "creepy" and akin to a "weird uncle," the reviewer felt compelled to share their experience as a "civic duty," specifically cautioning solo female travelers to be aware. They noted that Site 7 by the river was lovely, suggesting a pleasant physical environment, but the lack of peace due to the host's actions overshadowed this.

In stark contrast, another reviewer described the camp host as a "cool dude" who was "very knowledgeable but respectful of privacy." This reviewer found the host's bear stories, warnings, and advice to be valuable and appreciated, especially given the area's wildlife. They likened the host to the character Ron Swanson, implying a helpful yet not overly intrusive demeanor. This positive account stands in direct opposition to the negative experience shared by the other reviewer, highlighting the potential for vastly different interactions with the same individual.

Beyond the conflicting experiences with the camp host, the second review offered insights into the campground's environment and facilities. The area is described as "gorgeous and nice to explore," echoing the scenic beauty mentioned in the negative review. Despite being close to the river, the campsites are noted as "spacious and private from the other camps around it," providing a sense of personal space and tranquility, at least when interactions with the host were positive. There was reportedly "plenty of space to pick a good spot for our tent," suggesting flexibility for tent campers. However, the reviewer noted that RVs and vans might have "limited spots" as "at least half of the spots were walk ups," indicating a potential focus on tent camping. For tent campers, the campground is deemed a "good spot," with a "nicely kept" bathroom and "great sized and convenient" bear boxes and main garbage disposal.

The significant discrepancy in the reviews, particularly concerning the camp host, presents a complex picture for local users searching for "camping near me." While the physical environment of Clearwater Campground, with its river access and spacious sites, appears to be generally well-regarded, the experience seems heavily contingent on interactions with the camp host. The negative review raises serious concerns about personal boundaries and safety, especially for solo female campers, while the positive review paints a picture of a helpful and respectful host.

Given these conflicting accounts, local users considering Clearwater Campground should proceed with caution and seek further information. It might be beneficial to inquire directly with the campground management (using the same phone number as Rex Hale Campground) about the current camp host situation and any measures in place to ensure a comfortable and safe environment for all guests. Asking for clarification on campground policies regarding guest interactions with the host and any procedures for addressing concerns could also be prudent.

The second review's mention of limited RV/van spots and a significant number of walk-up tent sites suggests that Clearwater Campground might be better suited for tent campers or those with smaller vehicles. RV owners should definitely inquire about the availability and suitability of sites for their specific needs. The presence of bear boxes is a crucial amenity in this region, indicating an awareness of wildlife safety and the need for proper food storage.

The proximity to the river, as mentioned in both reviews, could be a significant draw for those who enjoy the sounds of flowing water and potential river-related activities (though these are not specified). However, the negative reviewer's mention of being in Site 7 by the river (which was otherwise lovely) underscores that even a desirable location within the campground could be overshadowed by negative interactions.

For local users actively searching for "camping near me," Clearwater Campground presents a location with appealing natural features. However, the drastically different experiences reported by previous campers, particularly concerning the camp host, necessitate thorough investigation and perhaps even direct communication with recent visitors if possible (though this might be challenging). Reading more recent reviews, if available on other platforms, could provide a more current perspective on the campground's atmosphere and management.

In the absence of any promotional information, the decision to camp at Clearwater Campground should be based primarily on an assessment of the potential environment and the conflicting reports regarding the camp host. Solo female travelers, in particular, should heed the warning in the negative review and exercise extra caution. While the positive review offers a contrasting viewpoint, the severity of the issues raised in the negative review cannot be ignored.

Ultimately, local users considering Clearwater Campground should weigh the potential benefits of its scenic location and river access against the reported inconsistencies in the guest experience. Direct communication with the campground management to address the concerns raised in the reviews and to gather current information about the camp host situation is strongly recommended before making a reservation. It is crucial to prioritize personal safety and comfort when choosing a campground, and the divergent feedback for Clearwater Campground suggests that further due diligence is essential.
