Elk Fork Campground

US-14, Cody, WY 82414, USA

4.0
This is a clean, well maintained site. Plenty of bathrooms and sites. We definitely recommend staying here whether you're headed into Yellowstone or to Buffalo Bill Park and even Cody. It is about 20 miles from Yellowstone's East Entrance. The campground Host was very friendly and helpful. Welcoming us in, giving us ideas and tips for wildlife and possible dangers with Bear. We didn’t see any in the campground.Good sized sites. West side sites border a Creek and the East side sites have lots of shade. The sites are good for tents, RVs and trailers. Some of the sites could accommodate 30' + trailer or RV in a pinch. All sites have Bear boxes and the campground is regularly checked by rangers. Be sure to appropriately use the Bear boxes ... Watched Rangers deal with a site who didn't and it wasn't pretty ... and apparently can be quite expensive if they decided to ticket you ... - Daniel Burkard

Elk Fork Campground Introduce

For local adventurers and travelers seeking "camping near me" in the Cody, Wyoming area, Elk Fork Campground, situated on US-14 and conveniently located just 20 miles from the East Entrance of Yellowstone National Park, presents an appealing option. You can reach them at (307) 527-6921 or +1 307-527-6921 for inquiries, although as it appears to be a well-regarded campground near a major national park, reservations might be recommended, especially during peak season, potentially through a national park or forest service reservation system.

Based on the consistently positive feedback from multiple visitors, Elk Fork Campground stands out as a "clean, well maintained site" with ample facilities. Reviewers specifically mention the presence of "plenty of bathrooms" and a good number of campsites, suggesting that the campground is equipped to handle a reasonable number of visitors while maintaining a standard of cleanliness. The campground's strategic location is repeatedly highlighted as a significant advantage, serving as an excellent base for exploring not only Yellowstone National Park but also the attractions of Buffalo Bill State Park and the town of Cody itself. This makes it a versatile choice for those looking to experience the diverse offerings of the region.

A recurring theme in the reviews is the exceptional friendliness and helpfulness of the campground host. Visitors describe the host as "very friendly and helpful" and "a great help also," emphasizing the welcoming reception and the valuable information provided upon arrival. This includes ideas and tips for wildlife viewing and important warnings and advice regarding bear safety, which is crucial in this area. The hosts' proactive approach in ensuring visitor awareness of potential dangers contributes significantly to a safe and informed camping experience. Notably, despite the emphasis on bear awareness, multiple reviewers mentioned not seeing any bears within the campground itself, suggesting that the safety measures in place are effective.

The campsites at Elk Fork Campground are described as "good sized," offering ample space for various camping setups, including tents, RVs, and trailers. A particularly appealing feature is the differentiation of sites based on their natural surroundings: the west side sites border a creek, providing a tranquil and potentially scenic backdrop, while the east side sites offer "lots of shade," which can be highly desirable, especially during the warmer months. The flexibility of the sites to accommodate different types of camping equipment, with some capable of fitting trailers or RVs of 30 feet or more "in a pinch," indicates a range of options for different camping preferences and vehicle sizes.

Safety is clearly a priority at Elk Fork Campground, as evidenced by the presence of "Bear boxes" at all sites. Reviewers strongly emphasize the importance of using these bear-resistant storage containers appropriately, recounting instances where rangers addressed campers who failed to do so, with potential consequences including fines. The regular presence of rangers checking the campground further underscores the commitment to both visitor safety and the protection of the natural environment. This focus on responsible camping practices ensures the well-being of both humans and wildlife in the area.

One reviewer described Elk Fork Campground as a "hidden, small little gem just 20 miles outside the east gate (Cody) of Yellowstone." This sentiment captures the essence of a well-located and perhaps slightly less crowded option compared to campgrounds within the national park itself. The reviewer also noted their luck in securing a site backing up against a creek with plenty of space between sites, highlighting the potential for both scenic beauty and privacy within the campground.

The repeated recommendations to stay at Elk Fork Campground, both for those venturing into Yellowstone and those exploring Buffalo Bill Park and Cody, speak volumes about its convenience and the positive experiences of past visitors. The combination of clean facilities, well-maintained sites, a friendly and helpful host, and a strategic location makes it a highly desirable option for "camping near me" in this part of Wyoming.

While the reviews provide extensive positive feedback on the environment, services (including the helpful host and ranger presence), and features (clean bathrooms, spacious and varied sites, bear boxes), there is no specific promotional information mentioned. Local users interested in staying at Elk Fork Campground should contact the provided phone numbers or, more likely, check the reservation system for campgrounds near Yellowstone's East Entrance (often managed by the National Park Service or a related entity).
