Our platform aims to connect local users with various camping options, providing detailed information to help you plan your perfect outdoor getaway. In this detailed introduction, we will explore Cottonwood Lake Group Campground, located at Smoot, WY 83126, USA. Based on the available customer reviews, this campground offers a unique experience, particularly for those seeking a quieter, more secluded setting with opportunities for wildlife viewing and hiking.
Cottonwood Lake Group Campground is situated in Smoot, a small town in Lincoln County, Wyoming. Wyoming is renowned for its vast landscapes, including the Rocky Mountains, national parks like Yellowstone and Grand Teton, and numerous opportunities for outdoor recreation. Smoot is located in the western part of the state, suggesting proximity to stunning natural beauty and potential access to various outdoor activities. For local users searching for "camping near me" in Wyoming, Cottonwood Lake Group Campground offers a location that promises natural beauty and a more remote camping experience.
The environment of Cottonwood Lake Group Campground, based on the provided reviews, appears to be a significant draw. One reviewer mentioned staying a few nights and being the only campers on the first night, indicating a potentially low-traffic and peaceful setting, especially during certain times of the year. The presence of wildlife, including a rabbit, a deer, and a moose, suggests that the campground is located in an area with abundant natural fauna, offering opportunities for wildlife observation. The mention of Slide Lake being a "great hike" with "really great views once you get up there" highlights the scenic beauty of the surrounding area and the availability of hiking trails for outdoor enthusiasts. The fact that the fee station was closed and camping was free during the reviewer's stay could be an occasional benefit, although it's important to note that this might not always be the case. The sign indicating that water should be treated as not potable is a crucial piece of environmental information, suggesting that campers need to bring their own potable water or have a method for treating water sourced from the campground or nearby natural sources.
Services at Cottonwood Lake Group Campground, based on the limited information, seem to be somewhat basic, which is not uncommon for group campgrounds, especially those in more remote locations. The presence of a fee station indicates that there is typically a charge for camping, although it was not operational during one reviewer's stay. The availability of water, even if not potable without treatment, is a basic service. Group campgrounds often include amenities such as designated camping areas, fire rings or picnic tables at each site, and possibly vault toilets. The reviews do not explicitly mention these features, so it is advisable for potential campers to seek more detailed information from the managing authority (likely the US Forest Service or a similar public land management agency) regarding the specific services and amenities available at Cottonwood Lake Group Campground. Information about waste disposal, accessibility, and any specific regulations for the campground would also be beneficial.
Features of Cottonwood Lake Group Campground that stand out from the reviews include its potential for solitude (being the only campers), abundant wildlife sightings, and proximity to scenic hiking trails like the one leading to Slide Lake. The "great views" mentioned by one reviewer suggest that the area offers picturesque landscapes, likely involving the lake and the surrounding terrain. The "group campground" designation in the name implies that the site is likely designed to accommodate larger groups of campers, possibly with larger or multiple designated camping areas. This could be a significant feature for families or groups of friends planning a camping trip together. The remoteness that leads to fewer campers could also be considered a feature for those seeking a more secluded and less crowded camping experience, allowing for a greater connection with nature. However, it also implies that campers should be well-prepared and self-sufficient, especially regarding potable water and other essential supplies.
Promotional information for Cottonwood Lake Group Campground, based on the positive aspects of the customer reviews, could highlight its serene environment, opportunities for wildlife viewing, access to scenic hiking (specifically Slide Lake), and its suitability for group camping. The potential for a quieter and more secluded experience could be a significant draw for those looking to escape crowded campgrounds. The natural beauty of the area, as indicated by the wildlife sightings and great views from the hike, is another key selling point. For local users searching for "camping near me" who value these aspects, Cottonwood Lake Group Campground could be an appealing option. The fact that it was free during one reviewer's stay, while not guaranteed, might also attract budget-conscious campers, although it's essential to verify the current fee structure. Any official promotional material should include accurate information about fees, water potability, available amenities, and the group camping nature of the site.
For local users in Wyoming or nearby states searching for "camping near me" and considering a trip to the Smoot area, Cottonwood Lake Group Campground presents an opportunity for a potentially tranquil and nature-oriented camping experience. The positive aspects highlighted in the reviews, such as the solitude, wildlife sightings, and access to scenic hiking at Slide Lake, suggest a rewarding outdoor adventure. However, it is crucial to be aware of the need to treat the water and to be prepared for a more self-sufficient camping experience, as detailed information about amenities is limited. We recommend that interested individuals:
- Contact the managing authority: Reach out to the US Forest Service or the relevant land management agency for the Bridger-Teton National Forest (where Smoot is located) to obtain detailed information about Cottonwood Lake Group Campground, including current fees, availability, amenities (like toilets, fire rings, picnic tables), regulations, and any advisories (like water potability).
- Check for reservations: Group campgrounds often require reservations, especially during peak season. Inquire about the reservation process and availability.
- Prepare for self-sufficiency: Given the note about non-potable water and the likelihood of basic amenities in a group campground, ensure you bring adequate potable water or a reliable water treatment method, as well as all other necessary camping gear.
- Research Slide Lake hike: Gather more information about the Slide Lake trail, including its length, difficulty, and any specific considerations for hikers (e.g., elevation gain, trail conditions).
- Be aware of wildlife: Wyoming is home to various wildlife. Take necessary precautions for wildlife safety, such as proper food storage and awareness of animal behavior.
In conclusion, Cottonwood Lake Group Campground near Smoot, WY, offers a promising option for those seeking a quieter "camping near me" experience with opportunities for wildlife viewing and scenic hiking. The positive feedback regarding the natural environment and the potential for solitude are attractive features. However, prospective campers should be prepared for potentially basic amenities and the need to treat water. Contacting the managing authority for detailed information and making necessary preparations will help ensure a safe and enjoyable camping trip to Cottonwood Lake Group Campground.

Cottonwood Lake Group Campground Reviews
We stayed a few nights and were the only ones there the first night. This campground campground was great! A sign said the water should be treated as not potable. The fee station was closed with no option to pay (FREE). Slide Lake was a great hike! We saw a rabbit, a deer, and a moose.

Dec 11, 2024 · Jameson MilesThis was a beautiful peaceful spot. Not too many bugs and fun for younger kids and older ones alike to climb on the rocks. The serene waters are perfect for boating, but the water is too cold for swimming. Next time we'll bring a boat with us.
Jul 05, 2016 · Janelle YoungstromBeautiful area. But this place has been attacked by humans. The trees around the campfire in our spot have been hacked for firewood. Bathrooms are so gross and there were just way to many people during the day. A huge family came and the kids were out of control. They threw rocks at us. We decided to leave the next day... it would have been much better if there werent so many people.
