Cowboy Creek Lodge Introduce
For local users seeking a distinctive "camping near me" experience, Cowboy Creek Lodge, located at 7304 US-12 in Onsted, MI 49265, USA, presents an intriguing option with a unique history. Reviews indicate that this property operates as a vintage roadside tourist trap and motel, offering a stay that deviates from typical modern accommodations. Understanding its history as the former Stagecoach Stop attraction, which opened in 1965 and featured cowboy shoot-outs, a sawmill, gold panning, hayrides, an arcade, and even a roller coaster mine ride and stagecoach ride, provides context for the current environment and potential features of Cowboy Creek Lodge.
The environment of Cowboy Creek Lodge is described as "rustic" and even having a "creepy ghost town vibe" due to the presence of leftover Halloween props from its time as a roadside attraction. This suggests a setting that embraces its vintage and perhaps somewhat aged aesthetic. Guests might find themselves surrounded by remnants of its past, contributing to a unique and potentially quirky atmosphere. While one reviewer mentioned exploring the outdoor areas, the experience was limited by cold weather, indicating that the grounds might offer more to discover beyond the buildings themselves. The presence of a "large saloon group room" suggests a communal space that could be a central feature for larger groups staying at the lodge.
Based on the customer reviews, the services at Cowboy Creek Lodge appear to be basic and potentially inconsistent. While one reviewer mentioned a maintenance person providing a heater, another reported issues with slow hot water for showers. The "large saloon group room" is noted to have a small kitchen but lacks a restroom, which could be inconvenient for groups utilizing this space. The availability and cleanliness of amenities like grills are also questioned in the reviews. It's important for potential guests to be aware that this is not presented as a luxury accommodation and to have realistic expectations regarding the level of services provided.
The features of Cowboy Creek Lodge are deeply tied to its history as a roadside attraction. The "large saloon group room" with a bar is a significant feature for groups looking for a communal gathering space. The presence of a small kitchen in this area could be beneficial, although its limitations should be considered. The remnants of the old Stagecoach Stop attraction, including potentially visible structures or props from its past Wild West theme and haunted Halloween events, contribute to the unique character of the property. One positive feature mentioned is the availability of a pool, which was enjoyed by at least one guest. However, the overall cleanliness and maintenance of other features, such as the grills, are areas of concern raised in the reviews.
Several reviews highlight significant drawbacks that local users considering Cowboy Creek Lodge should be aware of. Issues such as rooms without adequate heat, slow hot water, unpleasant odors ("smells old," "smells like rusty water"), cleanliness concerns (dust, potential mouse droppings, dead skin cells), and the presence of bugs (including a serious incident with a centipede in a guest's ear) are major points of caution. The overall condition is described by one reviewer as "Rundown" rather than simply "rustic," suggesting that the aged appearance might be accompanied by a lack of proper maintenance and hygiene. The limited availability of towels and the lack of guest-accessible laundry facilities for longer stays are also noted as inconveniences.
For local users searching for "camping near me" with a preference for unique, budget-friendly, or historically themed accommodations, Cowboy Creek Lodge might initially seem appealing due to its vintage roadside attraction history. The presence of a large group room could also be a draw for groups looking for a communal space. However, the significant negative feedback regarding cleanliness, the presence of pests, and issues with basic amenities like heating and hot water should give potential guests serious pause. The term "rustic" is often used to describe older, less modern accommodations, but the reviews suggest that the condition of Cowboy Creek Lodge might extend beyond simple rusticity into areas of disrepair and inadequate hygiene.
As a platform category focusing on "camping near me" and providing related services or goods, it is crucial to present an objective view based on all available information. In the case of Cowboy Creek Lodge, the customer reviews paint a picture of a property with a unique history and some potentially appealing features for groups, but also significant concerns regarding cleanliness and maintenance. Local businesses that might cater to guests staying here should be aware of the potential needs arising from the basic and potentially problematic conditions reported in the reviews. This could include providing extra cleaning supplies, insect repellent, or information on alternative lodging options in the area.
Currently, no specific promotional information for Cowboy Creek Lodge is provided. Given the mixed and often negative reviews, it is possible that the property focuses on its unique historical aspect rather than offering discounts or special packages. Potential guests are strongly advised to conduct further research, seek more recent reviews if available, and potentially contact the property directly to inquire about the current condition of the rooms and amenities before making a reservation. It would be prudent to ask specific questions based on the issues raised in the existing reviews, such as the heating and hot water situation, pest control measures, and cleaning protocols.
In conclusion, Cowboy Creek Lodge near Onsted, MI, offers a unique "camping near me" experience rooted in its history as the Stagecoach Stop roadside attraction. The rustic environment and the large saloon group room could be appealing to certain types of travelers, particularly those interested in vintage Americana or needing space for a group gathering. However, the significant negative feedback regarding cleanliness, maintenance issues, and the presence of pests cannot be ignored. Local users considering a stay here should carefully weigh the potential for a unique experience against the reported shortcomings and consider seeking more up-to-date information before booking. This property appears to be a case where the "rustic" charm might come with considerable drawbacks that could impact the comfort and hygiene of a stay.

Cowboy Creek Lodge Reviews
We had fun staying at a vintage roadside tourist trap / motel for our Christmas Party. This isn’t the Ritz, the rooms were decent, but some issues. One didn’t have heat so the maintenance guy gave them a electric heater. It took 20 plus minutes to get warm water for the showers. We spent a lot of time in the large saloon group room. It’s has a large bar. Small kitchen, but is lacking a restroom. This place oozes rustic! We took a few walks checking out what was once a frontier town roadside attraction. It still had their haunted Halloween props so it had a creepy ghost town vibe. We didn’t get to enjoy checkout the outdoor areas due to the 15 degree temperatures. The Stagecoach Stop / Cowboy Creek Motel had to be fun back in the day. Stagecoach Stop opened in 1965 and the attraction had old cowboy shoot-outs, a sawmill, gold panning, hayrides, arcade, and a souvenir shop. A roller coaster mine ride used to be here , along with a stagecoach ride.
Dec 16, 2024 · Rebel Rousers Car Club“Rustic” more like “Rundown”!Place is Dirty and dusty. Family room smells old, couches have mouse dropping, dead skin cells from 30 yrs ago and dust on them! Couldn’t sit on them unless it was covered or I felt dirty! Some rooms are update and some still need attention. Tons of bugs(no joke a family member had a centipede crawl in his ear when he was sleeping and had to go to med Express)! Grills were not usable or clean. Shower smells like rusty water. Two or three towels per room for a week stay and no washer and dryer available to use but only staff. Found mice in the family room. I would not recommend this place to stay! They are know for it to be “rustic” but it more of a Halloween “haunted house rustic” and maybe just stick to that or dedicate some time and fix up the place it could be nice!Pool was about the only thing we enjoyed. We made the best of things as we could but it’s just gross!
Jul 22, 2024 · Jessica KastleVery disappointed. Nothing like the photos suggest. Not well maintained inside or out. Facility grounds overgrown with weeds and vegetation. Rooms are dirty lots of bugs, mold on shower curtains no soap dispensers in any of the rooms. Temporary ac units in three rooms Very noisy also allows criters to enter. No main office , several unknown, unwanted visitors stopped in the community room while we were there. Used lots of lysol cleaner and lysol wipes. One refrigerator in community room with stove and microwave. All were dirty and food was left in fridge from who knows when. Five outside grills only one was in usable condition. Trapped several mice everyday in kitchen and community room . Advertised as rustic, I would say run down.
Jul 22, 2024 · Rich DiblerThis place is great! It’s not Hilton, but it’s such a historical gem. It’s a great value. The pool was amazing, along with all the staff. (Wick, Kathy, Clint, etc,) everything was clean & ready to go for us. We had a great ‘girls weekend’
Sep 18, 2024 · Katrina MinerAuthentic Western feel, historic information about famous cowboys, ameneties you dont find in every hotel, like a card table and campfire stocked with firewood, small play park for kids, very nice pool, and a super friendly and helpful staff! I would highly recommend it if you like westerns and/or the outdoors.
