Here are some pictures of the campsite. It is right at the entrance across from theVisitors center (which is open). We did not stay here but here is some current info and pictures. There is currently no water at the campgrounds. It is fascinating landscape and geology but I can’t imagine that tents would be very comfortable. It is $8 to rent a campsite or $4 for seniors so it’s a good price. - Terri Griffin

Craters of the Moon Group Campground Introduce

Welcome to Craters of the Moon Group Campground, a unique camping destination nestled within the extraordinary landscape of Craters of the Moon National Monument & Preserve, located at 1266 Craters Loop Road, Arco, ID 83213, USA. For those searching for "camping near me" and seeking an adventure amidst a captivating volcanic terrain, Craters of the Moon Group Campground offers an unforgettable experience. You can contact the campground at (208) 527-1335 or +1 208-527-1335 for inquiries about group reservations, availability, and any specific regulations or recommendations for your stay.

Based on recent feedback from visitors, Craters of the Moon Group Campground is situated at a prime location, right at the entrance of the National Monument and directly across from the Visitor Center, which is reported to be open. This proximity to the Visitor Center offers campers convenient access to information about the park's geological wonders, hiking trails, and ranger programs, enhancing their understanding and enjoyment of this remarkable area. The Visitor Center can serve as an excellent starting point for exploring the unique features of Craters of the Moon.

The environment surrounding the campground is described as a "fascinating landscape and geology." Craters of the Moon National Monument & Preserve is renowned for its vast lava fields, cinder cones, and lava tubes, offering a truly otherworldly setting for camping. The opportunity to "camp amongst the earthen eruptions," as one reviewer enthusiastically put it, highlights the immersive and unique nature of this campground. This distinctive environment provides unparalleled opportunities for exploration, photography, and learning about volcanic processes.

However, one important piece of current information to note is that "there is currently no water at the campgrounds." This is a critical factor for anyone planning to stay at Craters of the Moon Group Campground. Campers will need to bring their own water supply for drinking, cooking, and sanitation. It is advisable to confirm the water situation with the campground management before your visit, as conditions can change. Planning accordingly with an adequate water supply is essential for a comfortable and safe camping experience.

Regarding the comfort of tent camping, one visitor expressed a reservation, stating, "I can’t imagine that tents would be very comfortable." This comment likely refers to the rugged, rocky nature of the volcanic terrain. While the campground provides designated sites, the ground may be uneven or hard, making it advisable for tent campers to bring sturdy tents, thick sleeping pads, and perhaps consider the suitability of their camping gear for such a landscape. RV camping might offer a more comfortable option for those seeking a softer base and onboard amenities, although specific information about RV site availability and hookups is not provided in the reviews.

Despite the potential challenges of tent comfort and the current lack of water, the campground is noted for its affordability. The cost to rent a campsite is reported as $8, with a discounted rate of $4 for seniors. This reasonable pricing makes Craters of the Moon Group Campground an accessible option for budget-conscious travelers and seniors looking to experience this extraordinary National Monument.

One enthusiastic reviewer described the campground as "absolutely amazing" and a "must" for visitors. They emphasized its location "just off the highway," making it easily accessible, and lauded the National Monument as a "treasure." This positive sentiment underscores the unique appeal of camping within such a geologically significant area.

For those searching for "camping near me" that offers more than just a typical outdoor experience, Craters of the Moon Group Campground provides an opportunity to immerse oneself in a truly exceptional environment. The chance to camp amidst volcanic formations is not something found at every campground, making this a potentially memorable destination for nature enthusiasts, geology buffs, and anyone seeking a unique adventure.

When planning your visit to Craters of the Moon Group Campground, it is highly recommended to contact the management at (208) 527-1335 or +1 208-527-1335 to get the most up-to-date information on water availability, campsite details (including suitability for tents or RVs), group reservations, and any current advisories or regulations.
