Not too buggy or smelly, despite the cows everywhere, and fluorescent green water. Kind of a cool spot with kind of cool views. Good place to go fast in UTVs, and people sure do. We camped in a designated spot, but UTVs came tearing in way close, and we did not feel comfortable letting the kids play without boxing out an area with our vehicles. Tricky angles and big ol' protruding rocks make the drive a little challenging, but getting off the beaten path is super worth it. No problems getting back in towing a 31' fiver. Crazy lightning and healthy rain while we were there in late August. - Phil

Fish Creek Reservoir Introduce

Looking for a unique "camping near me" experience that combines scenic views with opportunities for adventure? Fish Creek Reservoir, located near Carey, Idaho, offers a distinctive camping environment that might appeal to those seeking an off-the-beaten-path getaway. Situated at W Fork Fish Creek Rd, Carey, ID 83320, USA, this location presents a blend of natural beauty and recreational possibilities, although with some unique characteristics to be aware of.

One of the most notable aspects of Fish Creek Reservoir, according to visitor reviews, is its somewhat unusual environment. Despite the presence of cows in the vicinity, campers have noted that the area is "not too buggy or smelly." However, the water of the reservoir itself is described as "fluorescent green," which is certainly an atypical feature. Despite this, the overall impression is of a "cool spot with kind of cool views," suggesting a landscape that, while unconventional in some aspects, still holds a certain appeal.

For those seeking adventurous activities, Fish Creek Reservoir appears to be a popular destination for UTV (Utility Terrain Vehicle) enthusiasts. Reviews specifically mention it as a "good place to go fast in UTVs," and it seems that this activity is quite prevalent in the area. While this can be exciting for those with UTVs, it's important for other campers to be aware of this potential for off-road vehicle traffic. One reviewer recounted an experience where UTVs came "tearing in way close" to their designated campsite, causing them to feel the need to use their vehicles to create a safety barrier for their children playing. This highlights the importance of caution and awareness regarding UTV activity within and around the camping areas.

Navigating the roads to and within the Fish Creek Reservoir area can present some challenges. The terrain is described as having "tricky angles and big ol' protruding rocks," making the drive a "little challenging." However, the reviewer also notes that "getting off the beaten path is super worth it," suggesting that the unique scenery and experience offered by the location outweigh the difficulties of the drive. Reassuringly, they also mentioned having "no problems getting back in towing a 31' fiver," indicating that while challenging, the roads are still manageable for larger vehicles.

Adding to the sense of being in a raw and untamed environment, one visitor recounted experiencing "crazy lightning and healthy rain" during their late August visit. This serves as a reminder that weather conditions in this area can be unpredictable, and campers should come prepared for various elements.

On a more positive note, another reviewer described Fish Creek Reservoir as a "clean, free, and beautiful campsite near Craters of the Moon." This highlights a significant advantage for budget-conscious travelers and those seeking a more primitive camping experience. The review also mentions the presence of "two sites with tables and fire pits and one pit toilet," indicating some basic amenities are available, although perhaps limited. The proximity to Craters of the Moon National Monument is another significant draw, offering campers the opportunity to explore this unique geological wonder during their stay.

Considering the information available, Fish Creek Reservoir offers a somewhat unconventional but potentially rewarding "camping near me" experience. The fluorescent green water and the presence of cows might be off-putting to some, but others might find the unique landscape and the "cool views" appealing. The strong presence of UTV activity is a significant factor to consider, as it can offer excitement for some but may raise safety concerns for others, particularly families with young children. The challenging access roads suggest that this location might be best suited for those comfortable with off-road driving or those with vehicles capable of handling rough terrain. However, the reward for venturing off the beaten path appears to be a unique and scenic camping experience, coupled with the benefit of free camping and proximity to Craters of the Moon.

For local users seeking a free and adventurous camping option near Craters of the Moon, Fish Creek Reservoir could be an interesting choice. Be prepared for the unique environmental conditions, potential UTV traffic, and challenging road access. The limited amenities (two sites with tables and fire pits, one pit toilet) suggest a more self-sufficient camping style. However, the beauty of the surrounding area and the opportunity for off-road exploration might make it a worthwhile destination for the right kind of camper.

While specific promotional information is not provided, the allure of free camping in a unique and scenic location near a national monument is a significant draw in itself. If you are an adventurous camper looking for something different and are prepared for the conditions described, Fish Creek Reservoir might be the perfect "camping near me" for your next outing.
