Located at Crowley Lake Dr, Mammoth Lakes, CA 93546, USA, this Bureau of Land Management (BLM) managed campground offers a classic, rustic camping experience with unparalleled views and access to a wealth of outdoor activities, all on a first-come, first-served basis. The phone number for inquiries is (760) 873-2400 or +1 760-873-2400.

Environment: High Desert Beauty with Lake and Mountain Panoramas

Crowley Lake BLM Campground is strategically positioned to offer stunning natural vistas. Situated in a high desert environment, it boasts incredible, unobstructed views of the expansive Crowley Lake to the east and the majestic Glass Mountains beyond. To the west, the towering peaks of the Sierra Nevada mountain range, including McGee Mountain and Canyon, provide a dramatic and awe-inspiring backdrop. The landscape is characterized by rolling hills and open spaces, typical of the Eastern Sierra's unique blend of desert and alpine ecosystems. While the campground itself may have limited natural shade, the wide-open setting allows for incredible sunrises and sunsets over the lake and mountains.

The area surrounding the campground is relatively open, which contributes to its peaceful and quiet atmosphere, especially at night. Campers can expect clear, dark skies, making it an excellent spot for stargazing. The elevation, being near Mammoth Lakes, implies a generally pleasant climate during the warmer months, though nights can be cool even in summer. Wildlife, such as deer, can occasionally be seen in the vicinity, adding to the natural immersion. The main road to the campground is paved, but internal roads are gravel, blending with the natural terrain. The strategic address also provides easy access to the numerous attractions of the Mammoth Lakes area, while still offering a sense of seclusion and connection to the vast Eastern Sierra wilderness.

Services: Essential Amenities for a Self-Reliant Stay

Crowley Lake BLM Campground is designed for a more self-sufficient style of camping, providing essential amenities rather than extensive hookups or luxury services. It caters to both tent and RV campers (with a maximum recommended RV length of 30 feet), making it a versatile choice for "RV Parks Near Me" searches that prioritize natural settings over resort-style facilities. The campground offers 47 RV/tent sites, including some pull-through options. The services and facilities typically available include:

  • Campsite Features: Each campsite is equipped with a picnic table for outdoor dining and a fire pit with a grate, perfect for campfires (fire restrictions apply; a California Campfire Permit may be required). A lantern holder is also typically provided at each site.

  • Bear Vaults: Critically, bear vaults (food storage units) are provided at the campsites. This is a crucial amenity in bear country, ensuring proper food storage and minimizing human-wildlife conflict. Campers are advised to secure all food and scented items, and to be aware of other small critters like mice, as noted by previous visitors, by using robust containers.

  • Vault Toilets: Clean and well-maintained vault toilets are available throughout the campground, providing basic restroom facilities.

  • Potable Water: Drinking water is accessible via hydrants within the campground. While some sources mention specific hydrant types, generally, potable water is available during the operational season (typically mid-April through October). It's always advisable to have your own water containers for convenience, as hose connections may not always be available. The dump station also provides non-potable water for tank rinsing.

  • Dump Station: An RV dump station is available on-site for a fee (reported as $10.00). This is a valuable service for RV campers and can also be used by non-campers for a fee. The dump station is generally available during the peak season (mid-April through October).

  • Garbage Bins: Trash disposal is available through provided bins, contributing to the cleanliness of the campground.

It's important to note that this is a dry camping experience; there are no electrical, water, or sewer hookups at individual campsites. The campground operates on a first-come, first-served basis, meaning reservations are not accepted. The nightly fee is generally $10.00 (with discounts for federal passes like the Golden Age/Access Pass). The maximum stay limit is 14 days per visit, not to exceed 28 days per calendar year across Bishop Field Office campgrounds. Closest amenities like gas, groceries, and additional services are available approximately 2 miles south in Crowley, or about 10 miles north in Mammoth Lakes.

Features: Angler's Paradise and Hot Spring Haven

The defining features of Crowley Lake BLM Campground revolve around its stunning natural setting, its direct access to Crowley Lake, and its proximity to unique Eastern Sierra attractions like natural hot springs. The most prominent feature is its direct "beautiful view of Crowley Lake," which is renowned as one of California's premier trout fishing destinations. This makes the campground an angler's paradise, with opportunities for lake and stream fishing right at your doorstep. Boating and windsurfing are also popular activities on the lake, especially during the warmer months.

Another significant feature, as highlighted by a visitor, is the campground's proximity to natural hot springs, such as "Hilltop springs," often just a short 15-minute drive away. This adds a unique and highly appealing recreational element to the camping experience, allowing campers to relax in natural geothermal pools. The first-come, first-served policy ensures that spontaneity is key to securing a spot, which is a feature in itself for those who prefer flexible travel plans. The general sense of safety and family-friendliness, despite its primitive nature, is also a reported feature, with many people and a quiet atmosphere. The spaciousness of the sites and the relatively spread-out layout contribute to a sense of privacy and tranquility, even when the campground is mostly full. The views from the campground include the rugged peaks of McGee Creek Canyon and the expansive Glass Mountains, offering a 360-degree visual feast.
