McGee Creek - Forest Service Campground Introduce
For those exploring "Camping Near Me" in the iconic Eastern Sierra, McGee Creek - Forest Service Campground provides an exceptionally beautiful and genuinely rustic experience. Located at McGee Crk Rd, Mammoth Lakes, CA 93546, USA, and managed by the Inyo National Forest, this campground offers a serene escape for campers who appreciate natural beauty and a less commercialized environment. It's important to note right away that this is specifically the Forest Service campground, and is NOT affiliated with McGee Creek RV Park and Campground, which offers different amenities like full hookups and showers.
The environment of McGee Creek - Forest Service Campground is its most celebrated feature. It is dramatically "tucked away between the mountains in the valley," providing campers with "spectacular" and "amazingly beautiful" views of the towering Sierra Nevada peaks. This location within McGee Canyon, a very colorful glaciated canyon, offers a unique geological backdrop with various colored strata and twisted rock layers. Situated at an elevation of approximately 7,600 feet, the campground enjoys crisp mountain air and a distinct Sierra climate. While the valley setting provides stunning vistas, visitors should be prepared for potential winds, which can be strong enough to affect cooking or campfires, as noted by past campers.
McGee Creek itself flows alongside the campground, providing the "delightful sound" of rushing water, though direct access to the creek might be overgrown in some areas. The campground is in a high desert meadow with a mix of sagebrush, rabbitbush, and some aspens lining the creek, but with relatively few large trees directly at the campsites. This means that while the views are expansive, shade can be limited at many sites, and some sites may lack natural shade from trees, instead providing shade pavilions. The surrounding Inyo National Forest offers a rich ecosystem, and campers should be aware that it is an active bear area, necessitating proper food storage in provided bear boxes. Despite being just two miles off Highway 395, the campground maintains a sense of seclusion and quiet, allowing for dark skies and excellent stargazing opportunities.
McGee Creek - Forest Service Campground offers basic, yet well-maintained, amenities typical of a national forest campground. It caters to both tent and RV campers, though RVs may be limited to lengths between 16 and 35 feet, with the average site accommodating up to 28 units. These services ensure a comfortable, self-sufficient camping experience for those searching "Camping Near Me" for a more traditional outdoor stay. Key services include:
Campsite Features: Each campsite comes with a picnic table and a fire ring with a grate. Some sites also feature shade pavilions over the picnic tables, which can be a welcome amenity on hot days.
Bear-Proof Lockers: As it is an active bear area, bear-proof food lockers are provided at each campsite. It is mandatory to use these for all food and scented items, both overnight and when unattended, to protect wildlife and prevent unwanted animal encounters.
Flush Toilets: A notable amenity for a Forest Service campground, McGee Creek offers flush toilets. Reviews specifically highlight these as "super clean" and "awesome," with individual stalls that include a sink and mirror. There is no electricity in the bathrooms, so a headlamp or flashlight is needed at night, and the water is cold, with no hot water for showers.
Potable Water: Drinking water is available at hydrants throughout the campground. While some sources mention that the spigots may not accept hose connections, potable water is reliably provided during the operational season (typically mid-April to end of October).
Trash Disposal: Trash bins are provided, allowing campers to dispose of their waste properly, though adhering to Leave No Trace principles is always encouraged.
Reservations: Unlike some BLM sites, many sites at McGee Creek - Forest Service Campground are reservable via Recreation.gov or by calling 1-877-444-6777. While some first-come, first-served sites might be available, it's generally advisable to make reservations, especially during peak season (July-August). The nightly fee is around $32.00, with half-price discounts available for America the Beautiful Senior and Access Passes. The maximum stay is 14 days.
It is important to reiterate that this campground offers dry camping only; there are no electrical, water, or sewer hookups at individual sites. Campers needing full hookups, showers with hot water, or trout ponds should consider the nearby McGee Creek RV Park & Campground, as the Forest Service campground does not provide these.
The distinctive features of McGee Creek - Forest Service Campground enhance its appeal to specific types of campers. Its prime location as a "close-to-the-trailhead" spot for adventures into the McGee Canyon area and the John Muir Wilderness is a significant draw. The McGee Creek Trailhead, a popular starting point for hiking and horseback riding, is just two miles from the campground, offering immediate access to majestic scenery and challenging trails. This makes it an ideal basecamp for avid hikers, backpackers, and equestrians. The Eastern Sierras are renowned for exceptional trout fishing, and McGee Creek itself, along with nearby Crowley Lake, offers excellent opportunities for anglers.
Another key feature is the sense of solitude and peace it provides. The campsites are described as being "a decent distance from your neighbors," contributing to a quiet and intimate atmosphere, even when the campground is busy. Despite being in an open area, the campground is often described as "cozy and comfortable" due to its valley setting and relatively clean facilities. The inclusion of flush toilets is a notable comfort feature for a Forest Service campground, often praised by visitors. The breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains, particularly during sunrise and sunset, are consistently highlighted as a major draw, making the camping experience visually rewarding.

McGee Creek - Forest Service Campground Reviews
Loved this campground!! We stayed here July 1-4. Amazingly beautiful. The bathrooms are flushable and include a sink and mirror. Bathrooms do not have electricity, but there are skylights so it’s lit and bright during the day but at night you will need a headlamp or flashlight. It stays relatively clean, with the exception of bugs that get stuck in there. No showers. And no hot water. Water stays cold. There’s a total of 6 individual stalls, 3 on each side.We could not get access to the creek, which was disappointing. I think it was too overgrown. We heard the rush of the flow of water, which was a delightful sound, just sad we couldn’t see it. There’s a small access point if you walk up the path but then it’s a deep drop down. What I loved most was how the campsite is tucked away between the mountains in the valley, so the views were spectacular, but that also means it was very windy. The wind would blow stuff as we were trying to cook, and made the stove fire go out. We made it work. There are also a lot of bugs. I got bit a lot, but that’s nature for you. The sunset and sunrise made it worth it.Campsite is also a decent distant from your neighbors too.
Jul 11, 2023 · Sandy KongBeautiful location. Dry camping only. Located 2 miles off 395. NOT AFFILIATED WITH MCGEE CREEK RV PARK AND CAMPGROUND. For full hookups, partial hooks, rv and tent dry camping, showers and trout ponds, please go to MCGEE CREEK RV PARK.
Feb 16, 2023 · McGee Creek RV ParkWe've camped here every summer for the last 3-4 years. It's a nice place with a couple of drawbacks. To summarize:Pro's: nice mountain veiws, widely spaced campsites (not crowded, even in July), clean restrooms with flush toilets, nearby creek for wading or rinsing off after a hike.Cons: most campsites have limited shade and can get hot during the day, T-mobile cell service is marginal.
Jul 24, 2023 · Erik LedmanThe place is beautiful, the manager is a very kind person and also provides excellent service, in short we will return very soon.
Sep 13, 2023 · Armando RomeroThis was a nice campground. Clean, flush bathrooms, you could hear the river nearby.Didn't take any pictures, it was an overnight place to go hike Mt Baldwin early the next morning.
