Dead River Landing Campground Introduce
For local users seeking a "camping near me" experience that offers a blend of natural beauty and basic amenities, Dead River Landing Campground, located in Vernon, FL 32462, USA, presents an interesting option. Based on the limited but informative customer reviews, this appears to be a relatively simple campground with a focus on providing access to the natural environment, including river access and opportunities for wildlife observation. Notably, one review indicates it might be a "nice little free campground," which could be a significant draw for budget-conscious campers.
Vernon, Florida, is situated in the panhandle region, known for its diverse natural landscapes, including rivers, forests, and springs. The name "Dead River Landing Campground" strongly suggests its proximity to the Dead River, implying opportunities for water-based activities such as boating, fishing, or simply enjoying the riverine environment. Campers can likely expect a setting characterized by the natural flora and fauna typical of this part of Florida.
The customer reviews provide valuable insights into the services and features available at Dead River Landing Campground:
- Spacious and Numerous Campsites: One reviewer notes that the campsites are "spacious and numerous," which is a significant advantage, offering campers ample room and potentially increasing the chances of finding an available site.
- River Access with a Launch: The presence of a "launch" indicates that the campground provides facilities for putting boats into the Dead River. This is a key feature for those interested in boating, kayaking, or other watercraft activities.
- Playground: The inclusion of a playground is a notable feature, making this campground particularly appealing to families with children.
- Regular Amenities: The reviewer mentions "regular amenities of covered picnic tables, firepits, bbqs," suggesting that these standard camping conveniences are available at the campsites.
- Clean Portapotties: While described as "older," the portapotties are noted to be "really clean, relatively speaking, and well stocked." This indicates that while the restroom facilities might not be modern, they are maintained to a reasonable standard.
- Wildlife Observation: One reviewer reported seeing "turkey vultures and wild pigs," suggesting that the campground is located in an area where wildlife encounters are possible.
One review also mentions that it is a "nice little free campground." If this is accurate, it would be a significant feature, offering a cost-effective option for "camping near me." However, it's important to verify the current status and any potential fees with the campground management directly.
The second review offers a slightly different perspective, mentioning "outhouses" that were "a bit dirtier than I would have liked." This contrasts with the first review's positive assessment of the portapotties. It's possible that there are different types of restroom facilities on-site, or that cleanliness levels can vary. This reviewer also noted "some litter" despite the presence of "plenty of trashcans," suggesting that campers should be mindful of practicing Leave No Trace principles.
Despite these minor drawbacks, the second reviewer found the campground to be "overall quiet with good night skies," which can be a significant draw for those seeking a peaceful camping experience and the opportunity for stargazing.
Based on these observations, potential additional features of Dead River Landing Campground might include:
- Fishing Opportunities: Given its location on the Dead River, fishing might be a popular activity, although this is not explicitly mentioned.
- Nature Trails: The surrounding natural environment might offer opportunities for short nature walks or exploring the area on foot, though this is not confirmed.
- Primitive Camping Experience: If it is indeed a free campground with portapotties and basic amenities, the experience might be more geared towards primitive or self-sufficient campers.

Dead River Landing Campground Reviews
Portapotties are older but really clean, relatively speaking, and well stock. Campsites are spacious and numerous. There is even a playground along with the regular amenities of covered picnic tables, firepits, bbqs, launch. I saw turkey vultures and wild pigs.
Apr 04, 2025 · RaquelNice little free campground, outhouses were a bit dirtier than I would have liked and even with plenty of trashcans there was some litter. Overall quiet with good night skies
Mar 02, 2025 · Brian MitchellI drove across the U.S. from east Florida and the first stop was here. I arrived after dark on a Monday night. There were just a few people there and we were all spaced far apart. It was quiet, and stayed that way all night. Upon waking I was pleasantly surprised to find a pretty campground next to a lake with beautiful trees and everyone had gone. I cooked breakfast on over a fire, ate under a sheltered picnic table and took a walk around the grounds. There is a porta potty there that was fairly clean. In all, it was a great experience and best of all FREE!
