You can reach them at (603) 538-6965 or +1 603-538-6965. Based on customer reviews, this small state campground provides a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in nature, away from the hustle and bustle.
Environment: Remote Beauty and Natural Wonders
Deer Mountain Campground is described as beautiful, rustic, and remote. Situated at the headwater of the Connecticut River and near the Canadian border, it offers a true sense of being in the wilderness. One reviewer noted that there is "nothing between campground and border but wilderness," emphasizing its secluded location. The campground is surrounded by natural beauty, including the Connecticut River running through it. The area boasts trails for hiking, back roads to explore, and mountains to climb. Additionally, you can find bogs, lakes, and streams suitable for fishing, offering a diverse landscape for outdoor enthusiasts to discover.
A particularly highlighted feature of the environment is the exceptional stargazing opportunities. The clear, dark skies away from significant light pollution provide a breathtaking view of the night sky, with one visitor exclaiming, "The stars(OMG) are just so amazing. I have never seen so many stars. The sky is so clear you can see the milky way and satellites." This makes Deer Mountain Campground an ideal spot for astronomy enthusiasts and anyone who appreciates the beauty of a pristine night sky.
Services and Amenities: Rustic and Clean
Deer Mountain Campground embraces a more traditional and rustic camping experience. Reviews indicate that there are no electric hookups and no cell service, which contributes to its remote and peaceful atmosphere. For those seeking to disconnect from technology and reconnect with nature, this could be a significant draw. Despite the lack of modern conveniences, essential facilities are well-maintained. The pit toilets are specifically mentioned as being "cleaned everyday and are spotless," indicating a commitment to hygiene even in a rustic setting.
One notable amenity is the availability of a "cornpopper cabin" for rent. This cabin is described as "absolutely beautiful" and a "best deal at $50 a night." It is equipped with a propane fireplace, solar lights, a bunk bed, a futon, a screened-in porch, a fire pit, and a loft with tables. The inclusion of solar lights suggests a basic level of off-grid lighting within the cabin. For water, there is reportedly a spring located behind the ranger cabin, providing a source of potable water for campers.
While the campground is remote, basic necessities and additional recreational options like ATV rentals and trails can be found about 10+ miles away in Pittsburg. This allows campers to enjoy the seclusion of the campground while still having access to services when needed.
The presence of a friendly and helpful multi-year camp host is also highlighted in a review. This suggests that visitors can expect on-site assistance and a welcoming atmosphere, which is always a valuable aspect of any camping experience.
Features and Activities: Outdoor Adventure and Relaxation
Deer Mountain Campground serves as a fantastic base for a variety of outdoor activities. The proximity to the Connecticut River opens up possibilities for fishing and enjoying the waterside. The numerous trails in the area cater to hikers of all levels, while the back roads invite exploration, possibly by car or bicycle (depending on their nature). The presence of mountains nearby offers opportunities for more challenging hikes and potentially scenic overlooks.
Beyond the more active pursuits, the campground's remote location makes it ideal for relaxation and enjoying the peace and quiet of nature. The exceptional stargazing is a unique feature that allows for a tranquil and awe-inspiring experience right from the campground. The option to rent the cabin provides a slightly more comfortable way to enjoy the remote setting, with amenities like a fireplace and screened porch enhancing the experience.
For those with larger vehicles, one reviewer mentioned potential challenges for moving a 12' 8" truck camper to some sites, suggesting that while accessible, careful maneuvering might be required for larger rigs. Tent campers would likely find many suitable spots within the campground.

Deer Mountain Campground Reviews
Very friendly and helpful multi-year camp host. This is a small and remote state campground at the headwater of the Connecticut River and close to the Canadian border crossing. There are challenges for moving our 12' 8" truck camper to some of the sites, but we have always, carefully, managed.
Oct 06, 2024 · Brett BinnsRented the cornpopper cabin for a week, absolutely beautiful. This campground is beautiful and rustic and remote. No electric, no hookups, no cell service but that's fine. The pit toilets are cleaned everyday and are spotless. The Connecticut river runs through the campground. You are right miles from the Canadian border and nothing between campground and border but wilderness. There are trails to hike, back roads to explore, mountains to climb, bogs, lakes, streams to fish. The stars(OMG) are just so amazing. I have never seen so many stars. The sky is so clear you can see the milky way and satellites. The cabin is the best deal at $50 a night. It has propane fireplace, solar lights, bunk bed, futon, screened in porch, fire pit, loft and table's. Drive about 10+ miles into Pittsburg for stores, restaurants and ATV rentals and trails. There is also a spring behind the ranger cabin for water.
Sep 14, 2024 · Alan AbbettFirst experience here with my wife and we have to say that Bob and Donna are fantastic hosts. Very friendly and helpful with a family feel. They were amazing, checking in after the storms and rain. Beautiful rustic camping for tents. Fulfilled a nice peaceful getaway and this was great spot for the first try. Will definitely be back again! Other campers were very friendly as well. Very clean bathrooms and well stocked. Very well maintained sites as well P.s thank you guys for the lemon bread it was amazing 🤩
Jul 23, 2023 · M. Ro.Nice, remote campground with no amenities, which I like. Just pit toilets and a spring by rte 3 by the entrance/behind the ranger's station. My only gripe is that the sites are pretty small, and very close together, and the drainage is a bit poor on the sites. We were there all week and mostly had the campground to ourselves so it wasn't much of an issue until Friday night when the place was filled! The rest of the week it was very quiet. It rained quite a bit, so even though we tried to select our site as best we could (we could see the path that the rain took, but we had limited options on where we could set up the tent), we ended up with a river flowing partly under our tent, but fortunately we had cots in the tent so even though the floor bled through a bit on one side, we still stayed dry; that probably wouldn't have been the case if we were sleeping on mats on the ground). The rangers were all very nice. Bridger was there for a few days covering and he recommended some hikes in the area, then Holly was there for a couple of days, and then Bob and Donna, who are the normal rangers for Deer Mountain for 5 days a week, returned and they were such nice people. They brought our firewood and our water jug to our campsite on Bob's golf cart so we didn't have to carry them and stopped by to chat when we were around. Rte 3 can be noisy, but like 4 cars go by all night so it's not that disruptive.
Aug 16, 2023 · Valerie PinnetteBeautiful and remote. I had no mobile service for miles. The hosts Donna and Bob are just the loveliest people. Next time I will try reserving one of their more remote sites.
