Del Norte Campground Hike

California 93001, USA

5.0
Keep in mind, this is camping! A campsite you must hike to get to and at any given time, there are a handful of people in the area that's only accessable by boat! If that's for you, you'll understand the 5 star rating. It's so secluded, the hike to get there was beautiful, amazing volunteers were out there working on the trail while we were there. There are only 4 sites, 2 are shaded, 2 have amazing views. There's a pit toilet--just throwing that out there, so you know what you're getting yourself into. One thing I wish I knew before going is there are mosquitos, but it's nature. The staff on the boat ride over were amazing! Stopped for us all to enjoy the whales and to pick up mylar balloons floating by the boat. The hikes around us were also beautiful! Enjoy!!!! - Denelle Reid

Del Norte Campground Hike Introduce

Are you a local adventurer in search of a truly secluded camping experience that combines a scenic hike with the unique access of a boat ride? Del Norte Campground Hike in California offers just that – a remote escape accessible only by boat, leading to a campsite with limited capacity and unparalleled tranquility. As part of the 'Camping Near Me' platform, we bring you a detailed introduction to this distinctive camping destination, drawing upon firsthand accounts to provide you with essential information about its environment, limited amenities, unique features, and the overall experience of venturing to this hidden gem.

Embrace Seclusion in a Boat-Access Wilderness

Del Norte Campground Hike presents a camping opportunity that emphasizes seclusion and a deep connection with nature. The fact that the area is only accessible by boat immediately sets it apart, promising a destination far from the more easily reached and potentially crowded campgrounds. This limited accessibility ensures that at any given time, there will only be a handful of people in the area, contributing to a serene and undisturbed atmosphere. For those who value privacy and a sense of being truly away from it all, this unique characteristic is a major draw and justifies the enthusiastic 5-star rating from those who appreciate this type of remote experience.

The Journey: A Beautiful Hike to Your Campsite

The adventure to Del Norte Campground begins with a boat ride, followed by a hike to the campsite itself. According to a reviewer, the hike to the campground is beautiful, offering scenic views and an immersive experience in the natural surroundings. This suggests that the journey is not just a means to an end but an integral part of the overall camping experience. The presence of volunteers working on the trail further enhances the appeal, indicating that efforts are being made to maintain and improve the accessibility and enjoyment of the hiking paths in the area. Be prepared for a trek that allows you to fully appreciate the natural beauty of the region as you make your way to your secluded campsite.

Limited Capacity: An Intimate Camping Setting

Del Norte Campground is intentionally small, featuring only four campsites. This limited capacity further contributes to the sense of seclusion and ensures that the area never feels overcrowded. Of these four sites, two are reported to offer shade, which can be a significant benefit, especially during warmer months. The other two sites are described as having amazing views, suggesting a trade-off between shade and panoramic vistas. When booking or arriving, understanding the characteristics of each of the four sites will allow you to choose the one that best suits your preferences.

Basic Amenities: Embracing the Backcountry Feel

In line with its remote and backcountry nature, the amenities at Del Norte Campground are basic. The only restroom facility mentioned is a pit toilet. As one reviewer candidly pointed out, it's important to be aware of this and understand the type of facilities available before embarking on your trip. This reinforces the need to be prepared for a more rustic camping experience where modern conveniences are limited. However, for those seeking true seclusion and immersion in nature, these basic amenities are often a part of the appeal.

A Natural Encounter: Be Aware of Mosquitoes

One piece of information that a reviewer wished they had known beforehand is the presence of mosquitoes. As they rightly point out, mosquitoes are a natural part of many outdoor environments, especially in certain seasons and near water sources (though none were specifically mentioned). Campers planning a trip to Del Norte Campground should come prepared with insect repellent to ensure a more comfortable experience, particularly during dawn and dusk when mosquitoes are typically most active. This is a common consideration for any camping trip, and acknowledging it helps set realistic expectations for the natural environment.

The Boat Ride: An Added Bonus with Wildlife Sightings

The journey to Del Norte Campground begins with a boat ride, and this aspect of the trip seems to be a highlight for visitors. The staff on the boat are described as amazing, contributing positively to the overall experience. One memorable instance mentioned was the boat stopping to allow passengers to enjoy the sight of whales, showcasing the potential for wildlife encounters even before reaching the island or the campsite. The crew also demonstrated environmental consciousness by picking up mylar balloons floating in the water. This suggests that the boat transportation to and from the campground is not just a transfer but an opportunity to enjoy the marine environment and potentially observe local wildlife.

Surrounding Beauty: Opportunities for Further Exploration

The natural beauty is not limited to the hike to the campground itself. The reviewer also mentioned that the hikes around the campsite were beautiful, indicating that there are opportunities for further exploration of the area once you have set up camp. This suggests that Del Norte Campground Hike serves as a basecamp for experiencing the wider natural attractions of the location, encouraging visitors to venture out and discover the surrounding landscapes and potentially additional scenic viewpoints or trails.

Why Choose Del Norte Campground Hike?

Del Norte Campground Hike is an ideal choice for local users who prioritize seclusion, are comfortable with a hike to their campsite, and appreciate the unique access provided by a boat ride. The promise of a quiet environment with only a handful of other campers, combined with the beauty of the hike and the potential for whale watching during the boat journey, makes this a distinctive camping destination. While the amenities are basic (pit toilet only), the focus here is clearly on immersing oneself in nature and enjoying a remote and peaceful setting. For those who understand and embrace the backcountry nature of this experience, the 5-star rating from a satisfied camper speaks volumes.
